Rafe

Two weeks had passed by and I was completely settled in to my house, I sat sipping a steaming hot cup of tea while being completely engrossed in a novel on the large swing chair hanging from the porch. The sun was just beginning to set and the hews of light that created rays of purples and reds were absolutely breathtaking, I had been having nightmares every single night since I came here, putting it down to nerves, maybe to all that had happened and with me being here all alone in this gigantic old house it seemed to be expected. The nightmares however were always the same, those all too familiar blue orbs of his eyes were constantly threatening the sanity of my mind and I just couldn’t shake it off. I kept allowing him to touch me, to come close to me. He was haunting my dreams and in each one he was getting closer and closer still to kissing me, each time however I would jump into a seated position in my bed screaming as my breathing stayed rapid for at least five to ten minutes afterwards. I would be crying, my cheeks sopping wet and my body completely moist from night sweats, I was beginning to think that I was losing my mind. But two days ago the nightmares just stopped, almost as if they had never been there to begin with. That was until I received a phone call from a very anxious Jeremy-    “Jeremy, what’s wrong?” “Laya, I’m on my way to you right now, we need to talk. It’s important,” furrowing my brows I felt a strange concern toward him right now, “Well hello to you to, um- sure you can pop by any time, you know that,” “Okay, good, because I’ll be there in five minutes,” “Five minutes?” I said taken aback, but the phone merely went dead on the other side. And true to his word he pulled up to my driveway five minutes later. I went to open the door for him with a wary smile on my face, “Jeremy, hi-” I said about to embrace him in a hug, but he didn’t even give me the chance. “I need all you’re files on the creations,” he said as he pushed past me, somewhat taken aback and annoyed I just shook my head, “Excuse me!?” “Don’t pretend like you don’t have back-up copies, you’re not that stupid,” “Well hello to you to. No Jeremy, I don’t have copies on anything regarding that subject, I lost it all remember,” “I know that’s what you told me but I know you, that’s bullshit and you know it,” smirking I folded my arms, “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” taking a few steps toward me he came right up close as he looked deep into my eyes, “You know. They’re coming to wipe us all out and you know everything,” grabbing both my shoulders he peered into my eyes, “Tell me Amelia, while we still have time to stop it from happening,”  gasping I pulled away from him when suddenly I felt an eerie feeling come over me, looking down I saw the condensation as I breathed in slowly, remembering the night I had been attacked in my apartment. “You have to go, now,” I said as my eyes widened, surprised and taken aback he looked confused, “What?” “I need you to leave, just leave me alone Jeremy. I don’t have any copies of anything. I don’t care about them and I don’t want to have anything to do with this,” I said almost pushing him out the door. Surprised by my reaction he turned to look at me, “What’s gotten into you, this isn’t the Amelia Gardener I remember,” “Great, I’m glad we have that out the way, now leave,” “Wait!” he said shoving something into my hand, it was a flash drive, “Look at this, the numbers are off the charts, maybe this will make you change your mind,” looking down at the silver flash drive in my hand I frowned as I looked back up at him, “I doubt it,” and with that I slammed the door in his face. Turning around I quickly made my way toward the kitchen but before I could get there I felt the energy shift and change behind me, instantly spinning around I gasped as I looked into his eyes, “It’s you,” narrowing his eyes he smirked, “So you do have copies on us do you, and what’s that you got there, some more information you’ve been keeping from me,” swallowing hard I tried to move but couldn’t. His eyes were dark and so was his hair, he was taller than me and strongly built. I remembered him from our last encounter in my apartment bedroom which only made me get a weird knot in my stomach. My breathing became heavy as I took a step back never taking my eyes off his, “You tried to kill me, twice,” grinning he c****d his head, “If I had tried to kill you, you’d be dead,” “Who are you?” I asked gulping, “You know who I am, what I am. The question you should be asking is- why aren’t I dead yet,” swallowing hard I took a deep breath before looking deep into his eyes, “Why?” smirking he shook his head, and in that moment a frown escaped him but he didn’t answer. Clenching my jaw I took another step back, refocusing his attention on me he looked down at my hand, “What’s in your hand? Looking down at my hand I frowned as I focused on the shiny flash drive in the palm of my hand, clenching my jaw I tightened my grip against it, my journalist senses kicking in, “It’s nothing,” smirking he c****d his head, “You’re lying,” looking up at him I narrowed my eyes before taking yet another step back, in that moment I turned to run but he yanked me back and flung me across the floor. I smacked my head against the wall as I groaned instantly feeling the impact of the blow against my head, quickly getting to my feet I stared him down even though I felt completely off balance. He came at me and my martial arts training I started taking two weeks ago online kicked in, not that I was all that great but I knew a few moves. I instantly went at him counter acting his moves. I pushed up against his forearm as I turned to fling him across my shoulder, which was astonishing as I was much shorter than him. I looked at my hands completely shocked, ‘it actually worked,’ I thought to myself. Obviously surprised by this he quickly got to his feet and grinned, “Interesting,” he said before coming at me again. This time I swung back and around before elbowing him in the back of his neck, turning back swiftly I held both my fists up at him as I focused on him, Smiling widely he looked completely surprised, “You have changed somewhat,” “Somewhat,” I said through gritted teeth, scoffing he suddenly came at me with a speed I hadn’t anticipated on. Smacking me down to the floor he was instantly on top of me, wrapping his hands around my throat as he started to squeeze whilst he stared into my eyes, “Give it to me now,”  “No,” I gasped as I tightened my grip around the flash drive. I refused to give up just because he was someone not from earth, I didn’t care if he was physically stronger, I was mentally stronger, well at least I hoped I was. Looking into my eyes something shifted in his, it happened so suddenly that I didn’t have time to prepare but they turned from black to that amazing blue and I felt completely mesmerized by him. He gently touched my cheek before pushing his lips against mine, in a moment of shock I pushed against him as my eyes widened. Pulling away he smiled softly before again pushing his lips against mine, again I pushed against him, “What are you doing?!” I said in an exasperated voice, “Kissing you, I think,” he breathed as he furrowed his brows still looking deep into my eyes, “Get off of me!” I said agitated, smirking he shook his head as something even more bazar shifted within him. In that moment everything around us became so silent we could hear the earth breathing. Pushing against him he pushed my arm down against the floor but wouldn’t let go, never taking his eyes off mine. My breathing was heavy as I stared at him and as he stared back at me. Gently touching my cheek once more he almost smiled in disbelief, “I should want you dead,” scoffing I felt taken aback, “I should want the same,” frowning I swallowed hard, in that moment he again gently pushed his lips against mine. They were so soft, so sweet. What was I doing, he was one them, he wasn’t part of what I was. I pushed against him again, looking deep into his eyes my breathing felt heavy. Gently touching my chin he again kissed me ever so gently, in that moment I felt something from him into me and I gasped, my whole body became alive in that moment as I pushed my lips against his, “This is wrong,” I whispered, “I know,” he breathed, grinning before again finding my lips. His lips were so- I didn’t have the words, they were not from here. They were so soft, so sweet, in control and everything I wanted, what was wrong with me, did he have me under a spell? He intertwined his fingers with my one hand as he kissed me with more deeper intent than before, suddenly his hand came up to my hand holding the flash drive. Gasping I pulled away gently as I looked into his eyes, smirking he fondled my hand as he convinced me to open it, taking the flash drive from it he looked at it once before flinging it way, intertwining his fingers with mine he shook his head, “What is this feeling?” intertwining my fingers with his I pushed my lips against his, he kissed me back and in that moment our bodies reacted to one another in a way I would never have known possible. It wasn’t about the flash drive, it wasn’t about our differences, it was about what we were feeling right here and now. I groaned and in that moment he tightened his grip around me, “I could kill you,” he whispered, “Yes, you could,” I said looking deep into his eyes. Frowning he clenched his jaw, taking a deep breath he again gently touched my cheek, “But I won’t,” he breathed before kissing me so intently I felt my whole entire being slip away into him. It wasn’t about us as individual species anymore, I felt him and he felt me. I knew it was wrong and so did he, but we were completely consumed with each other now. He kissed me and I allowed him to, me being someone who knew about the creations and what they were. I was now completely consumed by one, that was in itself inexcusable. As he kissed me with even more vigor I looked into his eyes and realized how softened they were right now, he looked so human and even more beautiful than humans could ever wish to look even if they had all the money for cosmetic surgery, he was flawless and breathtaking. “Why?” was all that escaped my lips as I tried to reason with myself, almost as if he understood the question he smiled softly, “I have no explanation for this,” nodding I furrowed my brow but that didn’t make me pull away from him. Suddenly feeling a shift in energy from him I opened my eyes and noticed he had turned his face to the left, confused by the change I turned my face to the right to look at what he was looking at and that’s when I saw Jeremy standing there, merely a few feet away just staring at us in confused and stunned horror, “Get your f*****g hands off her!” He said as he instantly took a step toward us, this being I was now so consumed by, instantly pulled me up with him and in a split second he almost protectively came to stand in front of me holding his hand as a shield over me, is that what he was doing, protecting me? It was in that moment that Jeremy’s jaw dropped as he gasped, his eyes widened and I could see how petrified he became. Frowning I then looked up at this being who was staring at Jeremy, I gasped as I brought my hand up to my mouth, his eyes were so dark, his whole face had changed, had hardened to something so sinister and evil. He didn’t look at me he kept his eyes on Jeremy as a low growl escaped him, realizing that what would come next would be the end of my friend I looked down at this being’s hand still protectively held up against me and slid my hand into his, surprised he shifted his attention to me, I entangled my fingers with his as I smiled softly at him trying not to look petrified by his appearance. Frowning he c****d his head as he just stared at me, his face started softening and his eyes became human, they resumed that glorious blue shine, “Amelia!” Jeremy said as confusion spread across his face, smiling softly at me this being completely turned to look at me, “Amelia,” he said my name so softly and intently it was like sweet music to my ears, nodding I smiled back at him. He took my other free hand and placed it against his chest, “Rafe,” he said nodding once, understanding I nodded as I smiled, “Rafe,” I said as I realized that was his name. Jeremy broke the moment when he spoke again with agitation in his voice, “He’s one of them, what are you doing Amelia, he’s one of the creations,” turning to look at Jeremy I frowned, would Jeremy understand that I was actually saving his life right now, that for some unknown reason Rafe didn’t want to harm me but would feel nothing to kill him, but before I could respond Jeremy’s face turned to that of disgust as he shook his head, turning on his heel to leave the room. I could do nothing to stop him, to reassure my friend of the real reason I had just done what I did. My referee was cut short when suddenly Rafe pushed me up against the wall holding his forearm against my throat as he peered into my eyes, shocked and taken by surprise my eyes widened as I stared at him. Clenching his jaw he c****d his head as he clearly tried to reason with himself on some level I didn’t quite understand, “What are you doing to me?” the question caught me completely off guard as I just continued to stare at him, what did he mean by that I thought, in the next moment he turned away from me and disappeared so incredibly fast that my eyes didn’t have the capability to comprehend the  speed at which he had moved. I was left standing there dazed and confused, taking two solid deep breaths I looked around and saw the flash drive lying down in the corner half under the couch. I ran to get it and then quickly made my way to my cellphone, picking it up I noticed a message from Jeremy, “How could you turn on your own kind to be romantically involved with one of the creations?  That’s sick Amelia, is this why you decided to leave New York, to leave the firm?” rolling my eyes I sighed as I instantly felt annoyed by his message, I know it probably looked that way to him but it wasn’t, I mean, it really wasn’t was it?   Turning the flash drive around in my hand I frowned before inserting it into my pc, in nothing short than a few seconds my jaw dropped completely. My eyes widened as I stared at the stats which Jeremy had been talking about, ‘They really are here to kill us,’ I said to myself in such a manner that I actually felt winded. Swallowing hard I closed my eyes for a moment, did the governments know about this, I mean surely they were doing something, preparing to stop this invasion from happening. Not only had the sightings increased at a catastrophic rate, but abductions had increased ten fold, what was going on, if they were here for our resources then why play this cat and mouse game. That’s when it hit me, it wasn’t about ending us, at least not straight away. They wanted to use us, imprison us as slaves. If the stats were corrected then that would mean they had been coming and going back and forth into our world and universe for that matter since the beginning of man. Had they enslaved us then, had something stopped them. I needed more answers, I needed to know why they wanted us. Sitting back in my seat I slowly touched my lips and then gasped, how was it possible that I had allowed a creation to kiss me, had he done that to merely distract me? Was he playing mind games with me, was that what was going on? Clenching my jaw I instantly felt irritated with myself as I picked up my phone lying right next to me on my desk next to my pc screen, dialing his number I wondered if he would even pick up. The phone rang three times and suddenly there was a “hello” on the other side, “Jeremy, I’ve just looked at the data on the flash drive,” there was a moment of silence on the other side, “And…” clearly he was irritated with me, “And you’re right, the readings are unbelievable. Have you shown these to anyone?” “No, you were the first person I thought to come to. Now I don’t know if that was such a good idea,” “Jeremy, I did what I had to, to save you. Rafe would have killed you,” “Oh, it has a name now,” taking a deep breath I tried my best to stay calm, “Jeremy. I understand how you must be feeling, walking in on whatever that was, but seven months ago in my apartment, the reason you ended up having to rush me to hospital was because of them,” “What?” “I didn’t know his name then, but Rafe and two other creations ambushed me in my apartment. They erased all my work and Rafe nearly killed me,” “Nearly, why would he have left you to live?” “I don’t know, but tonight he appeared again, except this time it was different,” “How so?” “It just seemed different,” “Was that the moment he had his tongue down your throat?” rolling my eyes I shook my head, “I don’t know what that was, I can’t explain it. He was probably just trying to get me to lower my guard,” “Probably, well I’m glad you’ve come to your senses,” “I have. I know what happened was wrong, I just don’t understand why it happened in the first place,” “Look, I’ll come up to you tomorrow, we can discuss the contents of the flash drive over a cup of coffee, okay,” “Thank you Jeremy, I’ll be waiting,” with that he ended the call. I was left feeling even more confused than before, what exactly was going on. Why had I allowed Rafe to kiss me, feeling even more annoyed I clenched my jaw, Rafe, seriously. He was nothing more than a creation, a monster who was here to destroy us.
