Chapter 5: Crossfire and Ruin

1718 Words
The crimson laser dot danced across the back of Tess’s denim jacket, invisible to her mortal sight, but Cal felt the atmospheric pressure shift a fraction of a second before the trigger was pulled. The ambient heat in the clocktower plummeted as high-density sniper magic ionized the air outside the stained-glass window. "Down!" Cal roared. He didn't just shove her; he wrapped his arms around her waist, twisting his body in mid-air to take the brunt of the impact as they slammed behind the heavy, oak-and-iron sofa. An explosive, high-caliber sigil bolt tore through the stained-glass window, shattering the ancient colored glass into a blinding shower of red and amber shards. The projectile struck the stone floor where they had been standing less than a second prior, detonating in a blinding flash of silver kinetic force that tore up the floorboards and blew the heavy wooden table into splinters. Plaster dust fell like snow through the dark room. The high-pitched whine of an incoming tactical squad echoed from the street four floors below. Tess sat up, her dark hair dusted with white plaster, her rose-tinted eyes wide with a mixture of shock and lethal focus. "That wasn't an ordinary enforcer rifle," she panted, her voice tight as she checked her hands for glass shrapnel. "That was an anti-demon disruptor." "Omega Squad," Cal growled, wiping a streak of dust from his forehead. His amber eyes burned with infernal fire, the irises completely overtaken by molten gold. "They didn't waste time organizing a search perimeter. They scried the signal from my communicator the second I opened the broadcast." "Opening that broadcast signal was a terrible idea!" Tess snapped, her voice tight as she checked her hands for glass shrapnel. "We're trapped on the top floor, Cal. They have the high ground and the street covered." "Then we make our own exit," Cal said, a dark, fearless grin splitting his sharp features. Outside, the heavy air thrummed with the sound of approaching propulsion boots. Three shadows dropped onto the narrow stone ledge outside the broken window—Omega Hunters clad in full tactical obsidian armor, their visors glowing with cold crimson runes. The leader raised a heavy, dual-barreled suppression launcher, preparing to flood the room with neuro-paralytic gas. "Take them down!" the squad leader ordered, his voice echoing through a distorted vocal synthesizer. Before the squad could depress their triggers, Tess acted. With her siphoning hunger no longer restricted, she reached into her own blood, tapping into the deep reservoir of Cal's siphoned Abyssal energy still surging through her system. She thrust both hands forward, unleashing a tidal wave of shadow-fire that swept through the broken window frame. The pitch-black, flame-laced darkness hit the lead hunter full in the chest, shattering his spell-shield and blasting him backward off the four-story ledge. He screamed as he plummeted into the alley below, crashing heavily into a metal dumpster. "Nice shot, sweetheart!" Cal shouted. He didn't give the remaining two hunters time to recover. He surged up from behind the sofa, drawing his heavy Enforcement blade in a smooth, blinding arc. The steel ignited with a roaring wave of electric-blue hellfire that illuminated the dark rafters of the clocktower. Cal lunged through the ruined window frame, landing squarely on the narrow stone ledge. He struck the second hunter with the flat of his blazing blade, the force of the strike shattering the man's shoulder guard and launching him into the air. The third hunter raised his sidearm, firing two point-blank kinetic rounds into Cal's chest. The armor-piercing bullets struck Cal's chest plate, sparking violently against his Cambion skin, but his Abyssal Core absorbed the impact like iron hitting wood. Cal merely grinned, his Amber eyes flashing with unhinged delight. He grabbed the hunter by the neck of his armored suit, lifted him off his feet, and hurled him straight through the clocktower roof. The roof collapsed inward with a deafening crash of timber and slate. Tess scrambled out from behind the sofa, vaulting over the debris to reach the ledge beside Cal. Down on the street level, three more armored Directorate transport vehicles pulled up to the curb, their heavy spotlights cutting through the fog, locking directly onto the top floor of the tower. "More incoming!" Tess called out, her voice rising over the blare of sirens and the hum of tactical engines. "We can't fight a whole battalion here, Cal!" "We aren't fighting them here," Cal replied, his breath misting in the cold night air as he turned to her. He sheathed his sword with a sharp click, extending his right hand toward her. "Do you trust me, Tess?" Tess looked down at the four-story drop, then at the glowing red muzzles of twenty Directorate rifles pointing up at them from the street. She looked back into his glowing golden eyes, seeing nothing but absolute, terrifying certainty. "I must be out of my mind," Tess breathed, but she placed her hand firmly in his, lacing her fingers through his calloused grip. "Don't drop me." "Never," Cal promised. He pulled her flush against his chest, wrapped his heavy left arm securely around her waist, and leaped off the stone ledge into the open air. For few terrifying seconds, they were in total freefall. The wind roared in Tess’s ears, the neon lights of the city blurring into streaks of electric blue and magenta. Down below, the Directorate squad raised their weapons, expecting the two rogues to crash onto the pavement. Instead, mid-fall, Cal summoned the full, uninhibited force of his Abyssal Core. A violent shockwave of blue flame erupted from his boots, creating a powerful thermobaric updraft that slowed their descent in a burst of kinetic light. They slammed heavily onto the roof of the lead Directorate transport vehicle, the sheer weight of their impact crushing the armored roof inward and shattering the bulletproof windshield. The tactical squad surrounding the vehicle stumbled backward, blinded by the sudden explosion of dust and blue fire. Cal didn't give them a chance to regroup. The instant their boots touched the crumpled roof, he used the momentum to spring forward, sweeping Tess up into a fireman's carry as he bolted down the narrow side street toward the rail yards. "Shoot them! Do not let them reach the tracks!" an officer barked over the tactical comms. Muzzle flashes strobed through the foggy alleyways as kinetic rounds zipped past their ears, biting into brick walls and shattering glass windows. Tess leaned over Cal's shoulder, her eyes flashing rose as she wove her hands through the air. She gathered the dark, heavy smog drifting off the industrial factories, condensing the shadows into a thick, pitch-black smoke screen that engulfed the entire street behind them. The Directorate enforcers gasped and choked as the magical shadow-fog neutralized their thermal scopes and blinded their squad lenses. "Which way?" Cal panted, his heavy boots pounding against the wet cobblestones as they burst out of the alley and into the vast, sprawling expanse of the central train yards. Tess gestured toward a massive, rust-streaked freight train rumbling slowly along the northern outbound tracks, its heavy diesel engine chugging rhythmically as it prepared to accelerate past the city perimeter. "The border runner!" Tess yelled over the deafening noise of the iron wheels grinding against steel rails. "Track four!" Cal adjusted his grip on her, putting on a sudden burst of Cambion speed that blurred the surrounding storage containers into a dark smear. He matched the speed of the accelerating train, running alongside a flatbed car stacked high with heavy industrial lumber. "Up!" Tess shouted. Cal leaped, his boots catching the metal lip of the flatbed car. He tumbled onto the timber, pulling Tess securely beneath him as the train roared forward, picking up momentum as it cleared the outer perimeter switches of the industrial district. Above them, the sirens and spotlights of the Aegis Directorate began to fade into the foggy distance, swallowed by the dark, endless expanse of the northern forest. Tess lay flat on her back against the rough wood, her chest heaving, her throat dry, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Beside her, Cal collapsed onto his side, his broad chest rising and falling heavily as the gold in his amber eyes slowly subsided, returning to a warm, hazel hue. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The rhythmic clack-clack of the train wheels against the steel tracks was the only sound in the cool night air. Tess turned her head, looking at Cal. A stray smudge of black soot was smeared across his cheek, his dark hair was wildly tossed by the wind, and his leather jacket was torn at the shoulder—but he was looking at her with a lazy, breathless, thoroughly satisfied grin. "You know," Cal said, his voice raspy from the smoke and exertion, "that was considerably more fun than filing paperwork at Directorate headquarters." Tess stared at him for a beat, and then a rich, genuine laugh burst from her lips. She rolled onto her side, resting her elbow against his chest, looking down at the half-demon who had just flipped the entire supernatural underworld upside down for her. "You are completely insane, Caelum Sterling," Tess murmured, her fingers gently reaching out to wipe the soot from his cheek. "They're never going to stop coming now. We just turned the city into a war zone." "Let them come," Cal said softly, reaching up to cover her hand with his own, his warm thumb brushing over her knuckles. "As long as I'm breathing, nobody touches you." Tess looked out over the side of the train car as the neon skyline of the city shrank into the distance behind them, replaced by the deep, dark shadows of the northern wilderness. They were broke, hunted, and branded as high-tier rogues with a five-million-credit bounty on their heads. Yet, for the first time in eighty-five years, Tessia Belacqua didn't feel like a predator or a victim. She felt free.
