Her Undercover (Part 3)

1700 Words
For his unexpected appearance, Jane gulped her saliva of anxiety, her body freezing in its place. That man's steps came closer and closer to her which sank her deeper into her thoughts. "Andrew…." That voice of someone who seemed familiar to her quit Andrew's footsteps. It saved her from the bad occurrence which might happen if Andrew unfurled her real identity. "I paid a visit to Blood Moon pack yesterday." As they were in a conversation, Jane took the initiative to rush back to her room; inside, after calming her heartbeat, she instantly covered her hair with a wig. To make sure they were no longer around, she peeked through the keyhole. Jane stroked her chest in relief once she saw no one out there but the maids in their hurried strides toward somewhere. With those maids walking in line to the location she questioned in her mind, Jane had a suspicion about what they were doing but she kept it in her heart. Of her lateness to do her work, Jane hurriedly stormed out of her chamber and did her duty. In the backyard, she raked the leaves with her eyes scanning around to find her prey. She came here indeed on her discovery of the werewolf's flaws to accomplish her mission of killing them. Doing a job was just a camouflage that she did not do it wholeheartedly. "What are you looking at Ms. Dawson?" A suspicious female butler admonished Jane with her glare at her. That did not daunt her for she could conceal her nervousness through her elegance. "What else am I doing but sweeping the yard, Ms. Smith?" With a lenient smile, she responded to the middle-aged woman. "I hope so." She almost abandoned Jane but after one step forward, she cease and turned to her. "I thought you were in the hunt of the handsome werewolves. Well, many maids came here not solely for work but to search for a husband. Who knows you are one of them?" A smirk bloomed on Jane's lips; she said something to herself in her mind. "I am in the hunt, indeed, Ms. Smith, but not for a husband but for a mission of murder. Probably you are one of them whom I should count to be a target." "Do your job well, Ms. Dawson." "Sure, Ms. Smith." *** "What is your intention of visiting them, Aeron? Hasn't it all been decided that I won't marry the Luna of Blood Moon pack?" Andrew blatantly demonstrated his protest toward his brother for he had presumptuously done something behind their father. It was inside Andrew's study room where they had a conversation. The topic of the talk heated the atmosphere of the cold quiet room for the gritted teeth Andrew showcased indicating his effort of restraining his bummer. Opposite her, stood Aeron who expressed his mind through the defensive words of his right action. "I felt sorry for Ms. Williams; she is the true victim of your selfishness. Besides, do you think this issue won't affect our reputation among the packs? It does. You have put our life on the line with the cancellation of the marriage. So, I took the initiative to fix the relationship …." "Does it work out?" Andrew did not give his brother a chance to complete his sentence. Through Aeron's weak shaking head, it was clear that all his effort was futile. "We all know what they are like. You shouldn't have sacrificed your dignity by visiting them." "I did that merely for the benefit of our pack." Aaron was staunch with his stance. Andrew slanted his eyes, questioning his brother's reasoning. "How could it be? It is Mr. Williams, the one who has canceled the betrothal." Aeron shuddered his shoulders as a sign of no clue to that question his brother asked. "I hope you will no more talk about this matter." Andrew surged at his feet; before he took some steps forward, the crush of the object hitting the floor startled them both and Aeron spontaneously pulled the door open to check it out. Nothing distracted their attention but the broken flower vase near the pillar in the corridor not far from which a small cat walked away in reluctance. "It's just a cat." Behind the pillar, Jane, catching her breath, hid herself after she escaped from Aeron who unexpectedly unlocked the door. She tried to eavesdrop on their chats to know their plan but it failed; she heard nothing but the name of Williams mentioned by one of them. She hissed at her carelessness for unconsciously kicking the vase when she was tiptoeing near the room. It was still lucky for her that they did not spot her there. For nothing she could do, Jane left her place. "Ms. Dawson, " at her back, someone caught her wandering around the hallway. The only thing she hoped was that whoever it was, she was not getting suspicious of what she was doing. "Oh…Ms. Smith…it seems we have been destined to meet more often today." It was not a good distraction but that woman in front of her eyes did not demonstrate her suspicion of her. "It's not recess time yet. Get back to your work." "Oh yeah…of course, Ms. Smith, I will." To avoid more of her questions, Jane briskly dashed away from that woman without looking back. On her way back to her work, her curiosity about the Willimas occupied her mind; this person might have been related to the Douglass pack. Whoever it was, as long as they were werewolves, they were her foes she had to destroy by all means. Passing through a group of bodyguards, Jane lowered her gaze to the floor while counting her steps to elude the interaction with them. It would be bad if one of them recognized her true identity; even though she was undercover, she had to always be cautious with everyone in this mansion. *** In the quarter of Blood Moon pack, Scarlet was having a debate with her father about his decision of ousting Aeron who had the good initiative to reconsider the engagement. In her opinion, it was his father who had crushed her only hope of marrying the man she had been in love with for so long. "It's not fair that you decided my future without listening to my opinion. At least, give them a second chance, father." With a blush of ire on his face, his father stood his ground that he would never allow his daughter to have any relationship with the people of the Douglass pack. "I don't believe in a second chance. Move on. They will never be a part of us." Scarlet couldn't hold back her tears as she scrambled to her room after hearing such a prohibition. However, on her way, she came across her father's man; his solemn expression convinced her that this person had important news to share with him. To avoid wasting time, she trotted behind the man in slow movements so as not to raise suspicion. Scarlet chose to remain outside the room where her father was when the man entered. In an attempt to steal his report, her head moved closer to the door, and one of her ears landed there. "You must have something crucial to convey to me." As if he had the power to read the man's mind, Mr. Williams, on his seat, could guess the intention of his arrival." That man, after a deep bow, reported the information he successfully gained which was about the incident at the engagement party in the mansion of the Douglass family. "Mr. Douglass has conspired to thwart the betrothal, Sir." The long neck of Mr. Williams craned at the shocking news he just heard. "What do you mean?" His widened eyes shot the man who soon drew his chin to his chest. "Andrew Douglass set a fake a*******n to trick us all that night." Receiving that bad news from his trusted man, his palms curled and formed fists in wrath. "How dare they do that to me?" His lips turned up into an evil smile. "They will certainly pay for the price of their impertinence." Outside, Scarlet covered her mouth in aghast upon hearing that unexpected thing she never anticipated; how could Andrew do that to her? He was the only one she adored, but he shattered her heart with the way she never thought he could do. "What is your plan, Sir? What do you want me to do?" "We will attack them and destroy their pack." Before the man exclaimed his agreement, the door was slammed open; Scarlet emerged at the doorway. "I'm sorry I don't mean to interrupt. But, I have a better idea, father." "Have you overheard our conversation?" "I do apologize, father." To show her regret, Scarlet's body hunched in a long bow. "Alright, what is your plan?" *** Like the other days, Jane had been ready to do her routines; despite all her fatigue, she had to do the jobs which drained all her energy for the sake of her mission. This morning, she got up early; she found no one when she barged out of her room. After killing her reluctance, she stepped over the tiles along the corridor. Once she reached the next corridor, a group of the maids stridden in line toward the destination she had no idea about. To feed her curiosity, Jane trailed behind them to where they marched with her gaze only falling to her shoes. At the end of the hallways, they turned to the grand hall; Jane's eyes goggled at the table with the maids sitting around it, eating. To the view in front of her, her hands clenched into balls in annoyance that the butler had lied to her about no breakfast for the maids. A wry smile of disappointment grew on her lips. In her heart, she promised that the woman would regret what she did to her. "Are you a new maid here?" A girl, her age, with straight blonde hair approached her with a glass in her hand. To her question, Jane nodded her head in response. "I am Scarlet."
