Chapter 7 – The Silent Witness

439 Words
The party had ended hours ago, but the memory of Adrian’s gaze lingered in the empty ballroom. Rosa could not shake it. She had seen men in love, men who cherished and protected, but that was not love. It was possession. It was hunger, sharp and consuming. Upstairs, Maria sat on the edge of her bed, her hands trembling, whispering into the darkness. “God forgive me,” she murmured, the words barely audible. The weight of her secret pressed down on her, heavier than any grief she had ever known. The door creaked. She looked up, heart stuttering. “Mother,” Isabella’s voice was soft, tentative, but threaded with emotion. Her eyes were red, swollen from tears she had held back for too long. “I need to ask you something.” Maria stiffened. Her pulse quickened. “What is it, darling?” Isabella stepped closer, voice trembling. “Do you… love him?” The words cut through Maria like ice. Her throat tightened, her heart thundered in her chest. She wanted to scream, to deny, to explain, but the truth hovered, impossible to swallow. “What do you mean?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I see the way he looks at you,” Isabella cried, her hands clenching at her sides. “And I see the way you look back. Please… tell me I’m wrong.” Maria’s knees weakened. She reached for her daughter, her arms aching to protect her from the storm she knew was coming. But Isabella recoiled, tears streaming freely now, and Maria had nowhere to place her guilt. “Don’t lie to me, Mama,” Isabella begged, her voice small but fierce. Maria opened her mouth, desperate to confess, to bare her soul and risk everything. But fear gripped her. Fear of shattering Isabella’s happiness. She swallowed, heart hammering, and whispered, “I only want your happiness. Always your happiness.” Isabella’s gaze hardened, filled with a betrayal that cut deeper than any blade. “Then stay away from him. Please,” she whispered. And with that, she fled the room, her sobs echoing down the hallway, leaving Maria trembling, consumed by guilt and longing. She pressed her face into her hands, wishing she could undo the past, the present, the desire that had grown between her and Adrian. From the shadows, Rosa watched, frozen. She had heard every word. Her eyes were wide, and for the first time, her loyalty felt like a weight. She understood that nothing in that house would ever be the same. Secrets had been spoken, lines had been crossed, and the storm was only beginning.
