Chapter 8 – Blood Ties

470 Words
The storm battered the estate. Rain hit the windows like fists. Lightning lit the dark rooms and cut across the sky. I sat at my vanity staring at the mirror. The face that looked back at me was pale and haunted. Mine. Tired. Trembling. I opened the drawer with shaking hands. Inside were pieces of a past I could never escape. Letters, photos, small things that belonged to Richard. The man I had loved and buried. One letter caught my eye. Richard’s handwriting. The ink had faded but I could read it clearly. If anything happens to me beware of Adrian Laurent My blood ran cold. Richard had known Adrian. He had feared him. Now I felt the same fear creeping into me like ice. “Mother?” Isabella’s voice came from the doorway. She stood there in her nightdress, small and worried. Her eyes were wide and searching. “It is just the storm,” I said but my voice shook. She did not believe me. “It is more than that. You are hiding something. Aren’t you?” Before I could answer the door opened. Adrian filled the doorway. Tall. Strong. Calm. Dangerous. He stepped inside and the room felt smaller. Every movement he made commanded attention. “Everything all right?” he asked. His eyes found mine and held me there. Sharp and steady. Dangerous. “Yes,” Isabella said quickly. She ran into his arms. Innocent. Trusting. Unaware of the tension simmering just beneath the surface. Adrian’s gaze never left me. There was a warning in his eyes. Whatever you know keep it buried. I shivered. The letter trembled in my hands. Could Richard’s death have been no accident? Could Adrian have had a part in it? My chest tightened and fear wrapped around me like a vice. Isabella looked up at him with total trust. I wanted to protect her. Keep her safe. I wanted to warn her. But I could not. Not from Adrian. The storm rattled the windows. Shadows danced across the walls. Every glance Adrian gave me reminded me how little control I had. Every subtle move, every quiet breath from him made my pulse race. “Mother?” Isabella whispered again. “What is it?” I wanted to tell her everything. Warn her. Shield her. But one look at Adrian froze my words. I could not let her see. Not yet. Lightning flashed again. The room lit up for a moment. I saw Adrian’s face clear as day. Cold. Dangerous. Unyielding. I could feel the storm inside me matching the storm outside. Fear, guilt, longing, and a pull I could not resist. Everything had changed. Nothing would ever be the same. Someone in this house knew more than they should. Someone was watching. And I was running out of time.
