Chapter 6 – The Wedding Announcement

450 Words
The ballroom glowed under crystal chandeliers. Golden light spilled across the polished floors. Laughter floated through the air, glasses clinked, and music swirled. But I felt none of it. My chest tightened with every beat. My hands trembled. Every breath reminded me of the storm inside me. Tonight was Isabella’s night. Her engagement party to Adrian Laurent. She looked radiant in silver, her hair catching the light like spun silk. Bright, hopeful, full of life. She deserved this happiness. I should smile. I should celebrate. And yet, I couldn’t. Adrian stood beside her, tall, confident, perfect. His hand rested lightly on her back. And still, his eyes never left me. Every glance he stole cut me deeper than I expected. Every subtle movement spoke words no one else could hear. I gripped my glass and forced a smile. Keep it together. Smile. Be happy for her. But the words Adrian raised for the toast burned straight through me. “To the woman who has given me hope again,” he said. His voice carried across the room. The guests erupted in cheers. Isabella blushed, radiant, certain the words were hers. I knew differently. I felt it deep inside. Adrian’s gaze, sharp and unflinching, was locked on me. Then I heard it, soft and meant only for me: “You belong to me, not her.” I froze. My breath caught. My pulse raced. The world blurred around me. Only his eyes remained. Dark. Dangerous. Hungry. And painfully true. From the corner of the room, Rosa’s eyes widened. She had heard. She understood. My secret wasn’t safe anymore. Someone else knew now. I tried to focus on Isabella. She deserved this night. She deserved happiness. I should laugh with her. But every nerve in my body was alive with tension. Desire. Fear. Confusion. I wanted to run, fight it, hide. And yet, I couldn’t. Adrian’s hand brushed Isabella’s shoulder lightly, but his eyes never left mine. The crowd’s cheers became a background hum to the storm between us. I felt a pull I could not resist. Rosa stepped closer, whispering in my ear, “Señora, be careful. Everyone is watching, but they don’t know the half of it.” Her words ignited a fire in me. The danger was close. The stakes were higher. The lines between love, loyalty, and temptation had already blurred. I raised my glass again for Isabella, forcing a smile. She deserved her moment. She deserved her joy. And yet, as Adrian’s eyes met mine one last time, impossible and consuming, I knew this night was more than a celebration. It was a beginning. A storm I could not escape. And perhaps, one I didn’t want to.
