Chapter 9: The Intruder

704 Words
The footsteps in the hallway grew louder. Slow. Careful. Deliberate. Alexander’s expression hardened instantly. All traces of doubt from our earlier conversation disappeared. Now he looked like the cold, dangerous man I had first met. “Stay behind me,” he said quietly. I opened my mouth to argue, but something in his voice stopped me. This wasn’t a suggestion. It was an order. The office door was slightly open, and the faint sound of movement echoed from the corridor outside. Someone was definitely in the mansion. And they weren’t supposed to be here. Alexander walked silently toward the door and pushed it open just enough to look outside. I held my breath. The hallway lights flickered softly against the marble floor. For a moment, it looked empty. Then…… A shadow moved near the staircase. Alexander stepped into the hallway immediately. “Who’s there?” he demanded. His voice echoed sharply through the mansion. The shadow froze. Then suddenly……. Footsteps. Fast. Someone started running. “Damn it,” Alexander muttered. Before I could react, he rushed down the hallway after the figure. I hesitated for only a second before following him. “Alexander, wait!” But he was already halfway down the staircase. The front hall came into view below us. A tall figure dressed in black was heading toward the main entrance. They moved quickly, almost like they knew the layout of the house. “Stop!” Alexander shouted. The intruder didn’t stop. Instead, they pushed the door open and ran outside. Alexander reached the bottom of the stairs just as the door slammed shut. By the time we ran outside, the driveway was empty. The gates at the end of the long road were already closing. Whoever it was had escaped. Alexander stood there for a moment, breathing heavily. His jaw tightened in frustration. “They knew exactly where to go,” he said quietly. I looked around nervously. The night air felt colder now. “Do you think they came for the file?” I asked. Alexander didn’t answer immediately. Then he turned toward me. “You shouldn’t have followed me.” “I wasn’t going to just stay upstairs while someone broke into the house!” His eyes studied my face carefully. “You could’ve gotten hurt.” The words caught me off guard. For a moment, I didn’t know what to say. Alexander sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “This house has one of the best security systems in the city,” he muttered. “So how did someone get inside?” I asked. “That’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out.” We walked back inside the mansion. The front door closed behind us with a heavy thud. The silence that followed felt different now. Unsettling. Dangerous. Alexander headed straight back toward his office. I followed him closely. When we entered the room again, his eyes immediately went to the desk. The file I had found earlier was still there. But something was wrong. Alexander walked closer. His expression darkened. “What?” I asked. He opened the folder and flipped through the papers quickly. Then he looked up at me. “One document is missing.” My stomach dropped. “The fraud investigation?” I asked. Alexander shook his head slowly. “No.” His voice turned colder. “The page with Daniel Reeves’ last known location.” My heart started racing. “So whoever broke in…..” “….was looking for him,” Alexander finished. The room fell silent. For the first time since this whole nightmare started, I realized something terrifying. This wasn’t just about revenge anymore. Someone else was involved. Someone who wanted to keep the truth hidden. And they were willing to break into Alexander Knight’s mansion to do it. Alexander closed the file slowly. His gray eyes met mine. “Looks like you were right about one thing.” “What?” “We’re not the only ones searching for the truth.” A chill ran down my spine. Because if someone else was looking for Daniel Reeves… It meant he might still be out there. And if he was… Then the past wasn’t finished with us yet.
