Chapter 111

2089 Words
✨No Way Back From This✨ Elena Vale The room was quiet except for the soft tapping of keys and the faint hum of the city outside. Ari was propped up against the headboard, laptop resting on his thighs, his focus fixed—sharp, unreadable, controlled like always. Elena, however— Was not working. Not really. She lay beside him on her stomach, her own laptop open but forgotten, her chin resting on her hand as her eyes drifted back to him again… and again. Her fingers moved first. Lightly tracing along his arm. Up the hard line of muscle. Slow. Distracting. Ari didn’t look at her. “Behave,” he said calmly, eyes still on the screen. She smiled slightly. Didn’t stop. Her finger traced higher, then back down again, slower this time. Testing him. “Ari…” she murmured, leaning closer, pressing a soft kiss to his jaw. His jaw tightened slightly beneath her lips. “Elena,” he warned. She hummed, like she didn’t hear him. Her fingers drifted lower now, brushing the edge of his sweatpants. That did it. His hand moved instantly, catching her wrist before she could go further. “Elena,” he said, this time looking at her. “Get back to work.” She met his gaze. Didn’t move. Didn’t listen. Instead— She smiled. And continued. That was all it took. “You like to act up until I—” His words cut off as he shifted, moving in one smooth motion, closing the space between them until he was over her. The shift was immediate. The air changed. She laughed head falling back. Elena’s breath hitched as he settled between her legs, his weight grounding, controlled—but heavy enough to remind her exactly who she was dealing with. Her hands moved instinctively, sliding into his hair, fingers threading through it as her breathing quickened. He hovered there for a second, watching her. Then she reached up, tracing her finger down the bridge of his nose, soft, slow. She lifted her head— And kissed him. It wasn’t rushed. But it wasn’t light either. It held everything that had been building between them. She pulled back just slightly, her breath uneven. “Can I talk to you about something?” she said. Ari didn’t move. “Hm?” he replied, though he had heard her clearly. His body shifted slightly, like he was about to move away, to sit up— But her hands tightened around his neck. “You don’t have to move,” she said quickly, softer now. “Stay right here.” That made him pause. Really pause. His eyes searched her face now. “I…” she hesitated, her voice catching. “I want to talk to you about something.” Ari stilled. Completely. She swallowed. “I was thinking—” “That’s dangerous,” he said quietly. A small, nervous laugh left her. “Please listen,” she said. His gaze softened—just slightly. “Always.” That was all she needed. Her fingers loosened around him, but she didn’t let go. “You’ve exposed me to a real relationship,” she began slowly. “Shown me things I’ve never experienced before… made me feel like I can trust someone… really trust someone other than myself.” Ari didn’t interrupt. Didn’t move. He just listened. Every word. “I…” her voice faltered. “You’ve shown me care. And I feel cared for. Like I’m someone’s… girlfriend. Like I matter in that way.” Her eyes filled before she could stop it. Ari’s hand lifted immediately, his thumb brushing just beneath her eye before the tear could fall. She sniffed softly. “Baby… why you crying?” he murmured, shifting up and pulling her with him, sitting them both up, his arms wrapping around her instinctively. She shook her head, but the tears came anyway. “I love you,” she said. The words landed heavy between them. “I love you so much, baby… it’s starting to hurt not saying it again. I can’t stop thinking about you—even when you’re right here. I just… I want to be with you all the time. I can’t stand the what-ifs.” Her fingers curled into his pants again. “I have this… consuming feelings for you,” she whispered. “Even when you’re here. It doesn’t make sense. I don’t know how to explain it. I just—” Her voice broke. “I’m in love with you, Ari.” Silence. Not empty. Full. Heavy. Ari didn’t hesitate. Not even for a second. “I love you too,” he said, his hand coming up to hold her face firmly, grounding her, making her look at him. “I’m in love with you, Elena Amelia Vale.” A small, broken laugh left her through her tears. “I don’t know what you did to me,” he added, a quiet chuckle slipping through, easing the intensity just enough to steady her. "I was impatient waiting for you to get here with me." She smiled weakly. His thumb wiped away the last of her tears. “You’re mine, baby.” Her breath trembled as she nodded slightly, leaning into his touch. “And you’re mine,” she whispered back. Ari pulled her into him again, holding her tighter this time. Not just close— Secure. Like he wasn’t letting her drift anywhere else. They stayed like that for a while. No rush. No movement. Just holding each other. Letting the weight of what they had just said settled. Eventually, Elena shifted slightly, her head resting against his chest again, her breathing finally calming. “You made me soft,” she murmured quietly. Ari huffed a quiet breath. “No,” he said. “I made you open.” She tilted her head slightly, thinking about that. “…that sounds worse.” He smiled faintly against her hair. “It’s not.” She let out a soft breath, her fingers tracing slow, absent patterns against his side. “I’ve never said that to anyone before,” she admitted. “I know.” She stilled. “You know?” she asked softly. “I know you,” he replied. That did something to her. Something quiet. Deep. Elena shifted again, pulling back just enough to look at him, her eyes still a little red but steady now. “Say it again,” she whispered. Ari didn’t hesitate. “I love you.” Her lips curved softly. “Again.” He leaned in this time, his forehead brushing hers. "I love you Elena and I hated myself for not saying back the day you told me in Matteo's apartment.” Her eyes closed. And for the first time— It didn’t feel overwhelming. It felt right. She leaned forward, kissing him softly this time. No urgency. No tension. Just truth. When she pulled back, she smiled faintly. “Okay,” she said. Ari raised a brow slightly. “Okay?” “Okay,” she repeated, settling back against him. “What does that mean?” he asked. She shrugged lightly. “It means… I’m yours.” Ari’s arms tightened around her again. “Good.” They fell back against the pillows together, her body tucked into his side, his hand resting protectively along her back. Her laptop sat forgotten at the edge of the bed. So did his. Neither of them cared. Because in that moment— Work didn’t matter. Time didn’t matter. Nothing outside that room mattered. Only this. Only them. And the fact that whatever this was— It wasn’t just intense anymore. It was real. Elena nestled closer into Ari’s chest, her fingers threading through his hair as his arms wrapped around her tightly. Every heartbeat seemed to echo between them, loud and sure, a rhythm only they could feel. “You have no idea how much I’ve missed you,” she whispered, her lips brushing his collarbone, her voice trembling with feeling. Ari’s thumb traced gentle circles along her back, grounding them both. “I don’t ever want to let you go,” he murmured, his voice rough with longing. “You have me completely, you know that?” She smiled, pressing her face into his chest, inhaling the scent of him, the familiar warmth that made the world outside disappear. “You’re mine,” she said softly, the words almost a prayer. “And you’re mine,” he replied, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. Time slowed as they held each other, whispering secrets and soft confessions. Elena let herself melt into him completely, letting go of every worry and thought that had lingered during their time apart. His hands were gentle yet demanding, their connection fierce yet tender. Every touch, every glance, every quiet murmur built a fire inside her she couldn’t—and didn’t want to—extinguish. She looked up at him, her eyes glistening. “I feel… like crying,” she admitted. “It’s too much… all of this.” Ari cupped her face, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek. “Then cry,” he said softly. “Because I’ll be here. Always.” And so she did—tears of relief, joy, and longing—while he held her, pressed her close, letting her know with every heartbeat and breath that she was exactly where she belonged. Ari went quiet for a while. Not the kind of silence that meant confusion— the kind that meant something had just landed. Elena felt it immediately. He wasn’t looking away… just looking through the moment, like he was locking it in, making it real. “Ari…?” she said softly. Still nothing. Then—he exhaled. Slow. Controlled. And when he finally looked at her again, something in his eyes had shifted. Settled. Decided. “That settles it then,” he said. Elena blinked. “Settles wh—” “I’m going to marry you.” The words hit her all at once. She froze. “Ari—what?” But he didn’t smile like he was joking. Didn’t laugh it off. He leaned in slightly, his hand coming up to cup her face, thumb brushing gently along her cheek like this was the most natural thing in the world. “You heard me.” Her heart was pounding now, loud in her ears. “You can’t just—” she started, shaking her head a little, breath uneven. “You don’t just say something like that after I—after I say I love you—” “That’s exactly when I say it,” he cut in calmly. Elena stared at him. “You just told me you love me,” he continued, his voice steady, grounded. “You don’t walk away from something like that. You don’t hesitate with something like that.” Her chest tightened. “Ari, this is—this is fast,” she whispered. “It’s clear,” he corrected. She let out a nervous breath, her hands pressing lightly against his chest like she needed space to think—but she didn’t actually push him away. “You don’t think this is a lot?” she asked. “I think,” he said, his gaze locking onto hers, “that I know what’s mine when I see it.” Her breath caught. “And you,” he added, softer now but no less certain, “have been mine.” Elena shook her head slightly, a small, disbelieving laugh slipping out—but her eyes were shining now, her emotions too close to the surface. “You’re serious,” she said. “Very.” “Ari…” she whispered, overwhelmed, her fingers curling into his pants again. “You’re going to give me a heart attack.” He smirked faintly. “Not before I marry you.” She let out a breath that turned into a quiet laugh, her forehead falling against his chest. “You’re impossible,” she murmured. “And you love me,” he replied. She lifted her head, looking at him again—really looking. And this time— She didn’t argue. Didn’t hide behind logic or fear. “…I do,” she admitted softly. Ari’s hand slid to the back of her neck, pulling her in gently until their foreheads touched. “Good,” he murmured. And just like that— It didn’t feel crazy. It felt inevitable.
