Chapter 55

✨The Timeline✨ Ari Darven Ari stood in the bedroom doorway for a moment after Elena walked out. He saw the shift in Elena’s expression the moment the call ended. She hadn’t raised her voice. She hadn’t accused him. But she had heard the timeline. Three months. That number had settled somewhere behind her calm exterior, and now she stood near the window of the living room quietly processing it. Her words lingered in the air. Because if she calls again… I’m answering. A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Jealous. She could deny it all she wanted, but he had seen the shift in her eyes the moment Selena’s voice came through the phone. Elena had stood there perfectly composed, asking calm questions, but there had been a fire beneath that control. And Ari had liked seeing it more than he probably should have. He ran a hand through his damp hair before pulling on a shirt and stepping into the living room. Elena was standing near the kitchen counter now, pouring another small cup of coffee. Her hair was still tied up from earlier, a few loose strands falling around her face as she moved. She looked relaxed. But Ari knew better. “You’re still thinking about it,” he said. She didn’t turn around. “I’m thinking about a lot of things.” “That call shouldn’t be one of them.” Elena finally faced him, leaning her hip lightly against the counter. “It isn’t.” Ari raised an eyebrow. “Really?” “No.” Her honesty made him chuckle quietly. She lifted the glass to her lips and took a sip before setting it down again. “You have a very complicated life,” she said. “That’s one way to describe it.” “And people clearly expect access to you.” “They used to.” Elena studied him carefully. “You ended that very quickly.” “Yes.” “Just like that?” “Just like that.” For a moment she didn’t say anything. Then she crossed her arms loosely. “You’re not the type to do something like that without thinking it through.” Ari leaned against the back of the couch. “You’re right.” “So you thought about it already?” “I decided earlier.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “When?” “When you told me to leave you alone.” The answer surprised her. Elena blinked once before looking away toward the window. “You make decisions quickly,” she said softly. “I don’t like wasting time.” She turned back toward him. “This isn’t a business deal.” “I know.” “You can’t just decide something and expect it to fall into place.” Ari watched her closely. “I’m not expecting anything.” “Then what are you doing?” He pushed himself off the couch and walked toward her slowly. “I’m choosing.” Elena frowned slightly. “Choosing what?” “You.” The word landed quietly between them. Elena didn’t move for a moment. Her mind was racing now, trying to catch up with the certainty in his voice. “You don’t even know if I want that,” she said. Ari stopped only a few steps away from her. “You wouldn’t still be here if you didn’t.” She opened her mouth to argue. Then stopped. Because he wasn’t wrong. The truth was she could have told him to leave earlier. After the kiss. After the tension. After the call. She could have returned to the safety of her carefully structured life. But she hadn’t. And Ari knew it. Elena let out a quiet breath. “You’re very confident about this.” “I am.” “That might be your problem.” Ari smiled faintly. “It might be yours.” She rolled her eyes but didn’t step away when he moved closer. The space between them shrank until only inches remained. Ari’s voice lowered slightly. “You asked how long it had been.” Elena looked up at him. “Yes.” “Four months since the last time I saw her.” “And before that?” “A few months.” Her eyebrow lifted. “So she was… what?” “A distraction.” Elena’s jaw tightened slightly. “That’s a terrible way to describe someone.” “It was the truth.” “And what am I?” Ari didn’t answer immediately. Instead he reached out, resting his hand lightly on her waist. “You’re the reason I ended it.” The honesty in his tone made her pause. Elena searched his face for any sign that he was exaggerating. But Ari wasn’t a man who needed to lie about things like that. He simply said what he meant. “You’re serious,” she murmured. “Yes.” Her heart beat a little faster at that realization. This wasn’t a game for him. He had made a decision. And now he was standing in front of her waiting to see what she would do with it. Elena exhaled slowly. “You’re very dangerous, Ari.” “Why?” “Because you make everything sound simple.” His hand tightened slightly against her waist. “It can be simple.” “No,” she said softly. “It really can’t.” For a moment neither of them moved. Then Elena placed her hand lightly against his chest. “Slow down.” Ari looked down at her hand before meeting her eyes again. “That’s not my style.” “I know.” Her voice softened slightly. “But it’s mine.” He studied her for a long moment. Then finally nodded once. “Alright.” The agreement surprised her. “Alright?” “For now.” A small smile tugged at her lips. “That’s the best compromise I’m getting, isn’t it?” “Probably.” She shook her head, amused despite herself. Then she leaned forward slightly and kissed him. This time she was the one who initiated it. The kiss was brief. But intentional. When she pulled back, Ari looked genuinely pleased. “That wasn’t very slow,” he pointed out. Elena picked up her cup again. “I said slow down,” she replied calmly. “I didn’t say stop.” Ari laughed quietly. And for the first time that morning, the tension between them felt less like a battle… and more like the beginning of something neither of them could fully control. --- Ari leaned against the counter for a moment, watching her. She shouldn’t have to deal with this. The thought crossed his mind more than once. Elena wasn’t like the women who usually came in and out of his life. Those arrangements had always been clear—temporary, uncomplicated, and understood by both sides. But Elena hadn’t signed up for any of that. She had stepped into his life and somehow managed to change the entire rhythm of it. Elena crossed her arms lightly, her gaze still resting on the morning glow outside. “I heard the timeline,” she said quietly. Ari pushed himself off the counter and walked toward her. “And?” Her eyes moved to him. “And I’m deciding how I feel about it.” “That’s fair.” She studied his face for a moment, searching for any hint of defensiveness. There wasn’t any. Just that steady confidence he carried everywhere. “You ended it quickly,” she said. “Yes.” “Because I answered the phone?” “No.” Ari stopped a few feet away from her. “Because it was already over.” Elena tilted her head slightly. “Convenient timing.” He almost smiled. “Accurate timing.” She didn’t laugh. Instead she walked past him toward the couch, sitting down slowly as if she needed a moment to think. Measuring. Adjusting. Elena was not like anyone else he had encountered. She didn’t yield under pressure. She didn’t lean into attention. She assessed it. Filtered it. Held it at a distance even when she allowed it close. And yet— He was gaining ground. Not quickly. Not recklessly. But deliberately. He had seen it in the way she stayed instead of leaving. In the way her responses stretched just a second longer each time. In the way her control—so carefully maintained—shifted in subtle, almost imperceptible ways when he was near. She was not giving in. But she was no longer untouched. That was the difference. Ari understood patience. He understood progression. Trust, with someone like Elena, was not given. It was built. Layer by layer. Moment by moment. And he had been careful with every step. No force. No sudden moves. Only presence. Consistency. Precision. He exhaled slowly, running a hand back through his hair. She was aware of him now. Not just his presence— His intent. And she hadn’t walked away. That mattered. It told him everything he needed to know about where he stood. Not inside her world. But no longer outside of it either. A space in between. Temporary. But significant. Then— A shift. Subtle, but immediate. His mind recalibrated. Because there were variables he had not accounted for. Variables he had not yet measured. And now— Elena would have to face one of them. This was not how he would have chosen to introduce complication. Not yet. Not before he had secured a stronger position with her. But it had happened. Which meant he would not avoid it. He would observe. Adapt. Respond. Because whatever came next— Would test more than just her control. It would test the ground he had been so carefully gaining. Ari followed but stayed standing, resting his hands on the back of the couch. “You shouldn’t have to deal with that,” he said. Elena looked up at him. “Deal with what?” “My past arrangements.” She gave a small shrug. “I’m not naïve, Ari.” “I know.” “I understand how your world works.” “Do you?” Her eyes sharpened slightly. “Powerful men rarely come without complicated histories.” He considered that. “That’s one way to put it.” She leaned back into the couch cushion. “But hearing it,” she continued calmly, “is different from assuming it.” The honesty in her voice made him respect her even more. Most people would have either pretended it didn’t matter or turned it into a dramatic confrontation. Elena did neither. She simply processed it. “You’re angry,” Ari said. She shook her head. “No.” “Jealous?” Her eyebrow lifted. “Careful.” That made him smirk slightly. “Then what?” Elena took a moment before answering. “I’m adjusting.” “To what?” She held his gaze. “To the fact that I might actually like you.” The admission hung quietly between them. Ari didn’t speak right away. Instead he walked around the couch and sat beside her, leaving only a small space between them. “That’s a dangerous realization,” he said. “For who?” “For both of us.” Elena let out a soft breath. “That’s what worries me.” Ari turned slightly toward her. “You’re still here.” “I know.” “You could leave.” She glanced at the door briefly before looking back at him. “I could.” “But you won’t.” She sighed. “You’re very sure of yourself.” “Because I know what I want.” Elena studied him carefully. “And what exactly is that?” Ari didn’t hesitate. “You.” Her heart gave a small, traitorous jump at that. Which annoyed her more than she liked to admit. “You say things like that very easily,” she said. “Because they’re true.” Elena leaned her head back against the couch, staring at the ceiling. “This is insane.” “Probably.” “I barely know you.” “You know enough.” She turned her head toward him. “And what exactly do I know?” Ari leaned closer, his voice lowering slightly. “You know I showed up at your door in the middle of the night.” She didn’t deny that. “You know I ended something the moment it became a problem.” Her eyes flickered slightly. “And you know I’m still sitting here instead of walking away.” The room fell quiet again. Elena studied his face for a long moment before finally speaking. “You’re going to be trouble.” Ari smiled faintly. “I already am.” She rolled her eyes slightly but didn’t move away when his hand found hers on the couch. The contact was warm. Steady. And surprisingly comforting. After a moment Elena intertwined her fingers with his. Just slightly. Not a dramatic gesture. But enough. Ari noticed immediately. “You’re still thinking about the call,” he said. “A little.” “You shouldn’t.” She glanced at him. “Why not?” “Because it’s over.” Elena searched his eyes again. And this time she believed him. Not because he said it. But because of the way he said it. Final. Certain. Ari squeezed her hand gently. “No more ghosts,” he said. Elena leaned her head lightly against the back of the couch again. “Good,” she murmured. Then after a moment she added quietly, “Because I don’t share very well.” That made Ari laugh. And for the first time since the phone call… the tension finally eased.
