Chapter 103

✨Choosing or Losing✨ Elena Vale By Friday, the silence had become unbearable. Not loud. Not chaotic. Just… constant. Like something sitting on her chest that refused to move. Elena stood outside the building, staring up at it longer than she needed to. Matteo’s address sat open on her phone, though she had already memorized it. She almost didn’t come. Almost turned around twice. Once in the car. Once outside the entrance. Because this— Showing up— Felt like crossing a line she couldn’t uncross. But so did losing him. Her hand tightened slightly around her phone before she finally stepped inside. The lobby was quiet. Clean. Impersonal. Nothing like Ari’s penthouse. Nothing like the space that had started to feel like home. The elevator ride up felt too long. Every floor that passed made her heart beat harder. Because with every second— She got closer to him. Or further from him. She didn’t know which yet. When the doors opened, Elena stepped out slowly. The hallway was quiet. Too quiet. She found the door. Stood in front of it. Stared. Her hand lifted. Paused. Dropped. “God…” she whispered under her breath, closing her eyes briefly. Because this wasn’t her. She didn’t hesitate. Didn’t doubt. Didn’t stand outside doors wondering if she still belonged on the other side. But this wasn’t just any door. This was Ari. Her hand lifted again. This time— She knocked. A few seconds passed. Then footsteps. The door opened. Matteo stood there. He didn’t look surprised. Which somehow made it worse. “Took you long enough,” he said, stepping aside without hesitation. Elena blinked slightly. “You knew I’d come?” Matteo gave her a look as she stepped inside. “I was hoping you would.” The apartment felt lived in. Not as polished as Ari’s. But grounded. Real. Her eyes moved quickly. Scanning. Searching. “He’s here?” she asked. Matteo nodded once. “In the back.” Her chest tightened immediately. She didn’t move right away. Her feet felt… stuck. Matteo watched her for a second. Then sighed. “Elena.” She looked at him. “You don’t come all this way just to stand in my doorway,” he said. She swallowed. Nodded once. And then— She walked. Each step felt heavier than it should. Like her body knew something her mind wasn’t ready to face. The hallway was short. Too short. She saw him before he saw her. Ari sat on the couch. Leaning forward slightly. Phone in his hand. Focused. Calm. Like he had settled into this. Into not having her there. That thought hit harder than she expected. “Elena’s here,” Matteo said from behind her. Ari stilled. Just slightly. But she saw it. He looked up. And their eyes met. Everything— The silence. The distance. The last five days— All of it sat in that one look. Elena’s breath caught. Because he looked… Different. Not broken. Not angry. Closed. “Hi,” she said softly. Ari straightened slightly. Not fully standing. Not moving toward her. Just… acknowledging. “Hi.” That was it. No warmth. No softness. No pull. And that scared her more than anything. “I—” she started, then stopped. Because suddenly— Everything she had rehearsed— Everything she planned to say— Was gone. Ari watched her. Waiting. But not reaching. “You came,” he said. It wasn’t a question. “Yes,” she replied. Silence. Matteo cleared his throat slightly. “I’ll give you two a minute.” Neither of them looked at him. But they both heard the door close behind him. And then— It was just them. Elena took a small step forward. Then another. Stopping a few feet away. “I didn’t know if you’d want to see me,” she admitted. Ari leaned back slightly, his expression unreadable. “You’re here.” That wasn’t an answer. “I didn’t handle things right,” she said. Ari’s gaze stayed on her. Steady. “No,” he agreed. That stung. Even though she deserved it. Elena exhaled slowly, steadying herself. “I was overwhelmed. I still am. But that’s not an excuse for how I handled you.” Ari’s jaw shifted slightly. “But it’s the reason.” “Yes.” Silence again. Elena took another step closer. This time— He didn’t lean away. But he didn’t move toward her either. “I should have talked to you,” she continued. “Instead of trying to figure everything out on my own.” Ari let out a quiet breath. “You always do that.” She nodded. “I know.” Another pause. “I didn’t come here to argue,” she said softly. “Then why did you come?” he asked. There it was. The question. Elena’s heart pounded. Because this— This was the moment. She could still walk it back. Still protect herself. Still stay in control. Or— She could be honest. Really honest. “I came because I don’t want to lose you,” she said. The words hung there. Raw. Unfiltered. Ari’s expression didn’t change immediately. But something in his eyes shifted. Just slightly. “That’s not the same as choosing me,” he said. Her chest tightened. “I am choosing you,” she replied. He held her gaze. Long. Searching. “Then why did it take you five days?” he asked quietly. That— That question cut deeper than anything else. Elena swallowed hard. “Because I needed to be sure I wasn’t just reacting to losing you.” Ari didn’t look away. “And now?” he asked. Her heart raced. But her voice didn’t shake this time. “Now I know I don’t want a version of my life that doesn’t have you in it.” Silence. Heavy. Fragile. Ari stood slowly this time. Closing the space just enough to make it real. “But you’re still unsure about everything else,” he said. She didn’t lie. “No.” His jaw tightened slightly. “That hasn’t changed,” she added. “My job. The case. The conflict—it’s still there. It’s still complicated.” “And you think we survive that?” he asked. Elena held his gaze. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. And there it was again. That hesitation. That truth. Ari nodded once. Not angry. Not emotional. Just… processing. “See, that’s the problem,” he said quietly. Her chest tightened. “You don’t know,” he continued. “And I don’t do ‘maybe’ when it comes to something like this.” Elena’s breath caught. “I’m not asking you to gamble,” she said. “It feels like one,” he replied. Silence. The distance between them felt smaller. But somehow heavier. “I’m here,” she said softly. “That has to mean something.” Ari looked at her. Really looked at her. “It does,” he said. A pause. “But I need to know if you’re staying.” Her heart stuttered. Because that— That wasn’t about right now. That was about everything. And Elena— For the first time— Didn’t have an immediate answer. Her lips parted. But nothing came out. And Ari saw it. Of course he did. His expression shifted again. Not anger. Not hurt. Something worse. Understanding. He stepped back. Just slightly. And that small movement— Felt like everything. “Yeah,” he said quietly. Elena’s chest tightened painfully. “Ari—” But he shook his head once. “Don’t,” he said. And this time— It wasn’t cold. It was tired. And that scared her more than anything else. Because tired meant… He was close to being done. And Elena didn’t know if she had just come all this way— Only to be too late.
