Deyra leads me to a dining room and sits me down at the table. She pulls out her phone, and starts texting someone. I smile up at her, "So where's Niko?" She smiles back and speaks in that voice that could soothe the angriest of wolves, "My mate is looking over Niko. I'm telling him to bring him to the dining room." I nod my thanks and wait patiently as Deyra moves to the kitchen. I can already smell food cooking. My stomach growls painfully.
As Deyra starts pulling food out of the oven, My mind wanders. I have an aunt. An aunt who loves me. I smile to myself, only to be interrupted by Ember in my head, "Ravyn, something isn't right. I don't think you should trust her." I immediately feel anger towards Ember. I reply in our mind, "She's my aunt. She may be the only person I can trust. You don't know what you're talking about, Ember."
Ember growls at me, "You can trust ME. And my instincts are telling me that something isn't right!" I roll my eyes and try to ignore her. It's at that exact moment, that the mark on my neck starts burning. I reach my hand to my neck and wince in pain, "Ah what the f**k?!" Deyra drops what she's doing in the kitchen and rushes over to me. She places her hands on either side of my face and makes me look up at her as she speaks in a voice laced with concern, "Ravyn, what's wrong?"
I open my mouth to respond but I'm interrupted when Deyra's mate suddenly bursts into the room. He stands easily 6'5 with spikey red hair and blue eyes. He is an absolute unit of a man. Which is why, it's surprising that he looks afraid of something. What does a man like that have to be afraid of? Deyra looks up at him and speaks, "Felix? What's wrong?" Felix looks at her and shakes his head, his voice sounding exasperated, "We were on our way in here but he shifted. He shifted and he just left. I tried to chase after him but it's snowing too hard. I can't catch his scent or find his tracks."
I would think Felix was joking if it weren't for the pain in my neck. It tells me that my mate is getting further away. Too far. Ember snarls in my head, "He wouldn't just leave us! He loves us. They're lying!" I swallow hard and look up at Deyra. I shake my head, tears falling down my face, "You gotta take me home. I need to see Niko. He wouldn't just leave me like that. He loves me."
Deyra sighs softly and rubs her face with her hand. She eventually nods, "Okay. We can talk about it after you eat. You've been unconscious all day. You need food in you. And then, we can talk about it after." I nod. she's right. I do need to eat. I'm starving.
Felix sets up the table while Deyra serves the food. Once everyone is seated, I dig in. The food is delicious but I don't take the time to savor it. I don't have time. I have to talk to Niko. I finish my food quickly and then look up at Deyra and Felix. They're both still eating. I look down at my hands folded in my lap, my mind spiraling.
Why did Niko leave without talking to me first? Maybe he's confused. I hear Ember in my head again, "HE WOULDN'T! Why aren't you listening to me?! Niko wouldn't leave us. His wolf, Jax, would never let him!" I respond in my mind, "You just said I'm not listening to you. maybe Niko isn't listening to Jax. You're a part of me but you don't control me. Same with Jax and Niko."
Ember growls again, "This is ridiculous! Say something to Deyra! She's bullshitting, I know it!" Just then, I'm pulled out of my internal conversation with Ember when Deyra sets her silverware down and clears her throat, "Is it okay if I take you home tomorrow?" I'm about to argue but she cuts me off, "Sweetheart, it's just that there's a snowstorm outside right now. It's not safe to travel. Even in our wolf forms, it's just too hazardous outside."
I whimper, "But Niko is out there. if it's so dangerous then we have find him before he gets too far." Deyra smiles reassuringly at me, "Ravyn, Niko is an alpha. He has much keener senses than any of us. I'm sure he's alright." That actually calms me down a little. I breathe a sigh of relief. She's right. Niko will be fine.
And, he'll definitely be coming back for me anyways. He wouldn't just abandon me. I nod at Deyra, "You're right. Of course you're right." Deyra smiles and stands up. she walks over and pulls me to my feet, leading me to the sitting room as she speaks softly, "I have something that I think you'd like to have. close your eyes"
With a little hesitation. I close my eyes. I hear the sound of shuffling as Deyra grabs something. A moment later, I feel her placing something around my neck. She pulls away and tells me to open my eyes. My eyes flutter open and I can see myself in the reflection of a small mirror that Deyra is holding up. The necklace is a red moonstone. My eyes widen and my fi gers absent-mindedly run along the stone as I whisper, "It's really beautiful..."
Deyra smiles brightly and nods, "It belonged to Vera. I thought you should have it." Tears immediately fill my eyes and I can't stop myself from hugging Deyra so tightly that if she weren't a werewolf, she would probably break. She holds me close and strokes my hair and back as she whispers softly, "Shhhh....It's alright, Ravyn. you don't have to worry. You have real family now. I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere. My sweet, beautiful niece..." I just stay there, in Deyra's arms as tears fall freely down my cheeks."
