Chapter 8: Unlocked

The apartment felt smaller in the morning, cluttered with papers and the hum of her laptop. Aria rubbed her eyes, replaying last night’s moments in her mind—the brief kiss, the heat in his gaze, the way his presence had lingered even after he left. Shaking off the memory, she leaned over her camera, reviewing the latest photos from the gala. Something caught her eye—a folded document slipped behind a ledger, partially hidden, marked with a symbol she didn’t recognize. Her pulse quickened. This could be the breakthrough she had been chasing. A knock at the door made her jump. Her heart thudded. “Kael,” she whispered as he stepped inside, coat in hand, scanning the room with sharp precision. His gaze softened when it settled on her, and for a moment, the tension between them hummed like electricity. “You found something,” he said quietly, moving closer. “I think so,” Aria admitted, pointing to the symbol. “This could lead to Crowe’s hidden operations. If I follow it, I might uncover everything.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Then we need to be careful. Whoever marked this knows what they’re hiding. One wrong move…” He left the threat unfinished, but she understood. Her stomach tightened with both fear and anticipation. “I want to do this,” she said, resolute. “I need to know the truth.” He brushed his hand against hers. The touch was brief but electric. “I know,” he murmured. “And I’ll be with you, every step.” Hours passed as they pieced together the hidden accounts. The apartment was quiet, the hum of her laptop mingling with the steady tap of rain against the windows. The nearness of him made her chest ache. She wanted more than protection. She wanted him, the warmth of his body, the fire she could no longer ignore. His lips brushed hers, soft at first, testing the waters. She shivered, every nerve alive. He pulled back slightly, eyes dark with both desire and restraint. “You’ve done more than I expected,” he murmured, thumb brushing over her knuckles. Her pulse raced, a delicious tension winding through her body. For a heartbeat, everything else—the papers, the symbol, the city—vanished. Only him. Only the heat between them. He leaned in again, lips finding hers in a kiss that was deeper now, more urgent, but still measured, filled with unspoken promises. Aria’s hands threaded through his hair, pulling him closer, feeling the strength beneath his coat, the warmth of him. When he pressed her against the edge of the desk, papers tumbling around them, the room seemed to shrink, charged with every glance and every touch. Kael’s hands traced the curve of her back, slipping beneath her sweater. She shivered, pressing into him, caught between restraint and abandon. “I’ve wanted this,” he murmured against her neck, voice low, teeth grazing her skin, sending sparks through her. “More than I should.” “Then don’t hold back,” she breathed, arching into him. “I don’t want you to.”
