Chapter 25
Sarah's right hand froze in mid-air as she processes the Minister of defense question. "Excuse me, sir, I don't think I heard your question correctly, can you please repeat"
With a smile, Salam answered "save the formality for when we are in public dear, call me Salam" before Sarah could protest, he continued "my question was how did you meet my nephew?"
Yes, she had heard correctly the first time, it just that it had taken a bit of time for the question to be registered within her brain. She stole a glance at Amir, who had his left hand on his face. She could assume that Amir was uncomfortable. Was he uncomfortable because the Minister of defense just revealed he was Amir's uncle? Focusing her attention toward the Minister of defense, she answered his question "We met at my office"
"At your office?" repeated Salam
"Yes, he and my boss Mr. Colin have had a friendship for years"
"Ah I see, so you worked at the deluxe media"
"Yes sir"
"Now that you are mentioning it, I have read a couple of their articles online; my most enjoyable is the sports column, the writer has a way to make you feel as if you were living the games live"
Chuckling Sarah answers "Yes you most certainly right, Anna is quite gifted in that area"
"Ah, so it's a she! They say sports are the domain of men, nowadays in the western country; women have advanced in that field. It's a shame for only men should be allowed to play" says Salam
"And why is that?" asked Sarah
"It's simple dear, men have the physics for the hard labors, and woman has much delicateness for such physical activity"
"I don't agree with you, men and women are allowed to practice the same sport or whatsoever they wish. True, our bodies are different from men's but it certainly can't stop us"
"Women were created to be led by men and for that their main goal should be to give birth and raise the children, provide for her husband and create a home atmosphere. Men are superior to woman, therefore her role should be as such" says Salam
"I disagree with you, Sir; women were not created to be men slaves. We were created to be your helper, your supports, etc... we have our role to fill, but we are all born on equal ground. We could be the greatest athlete there is, yet we fill our role properly as a wife and a mother. Without having to go by the rules of those that wish to keep us locked. A woman that decides to be a stay at home woman should hold her head high and should be congratulated. For she put aside her dreams and much more to concentrate on her family, in other terms, she sacrificed herself. At the same time, a woman who chooses to keep her career and focus on her family should also be congratulated, for this is no small task. Have you ever heard of the saying "behind every great man, there's a strong woman?"
Salam watches Sarah answer, and it pleased him to see her response toward the subject, wanting to learn more about how she thinks he continued "Ah my dear, a man is the sole leader of his household and can only take advice from another man and not a woman"
"That's insane; a woman knows so much more and understands so much more than she let on. We may appear weak, but we are not, we're stronger and smarter. Look at all the great women's leaders we have in this day and time"
"Foolish, I assure you, women's have gone over the limit"
"They have not gone over the limit, they simply fill in the role of cowardice men's who weren't up for the task. Where men fall, we woman rises. Your failure is our gain."
"You speak as if all women were good, even in ancient times, we know of an evil queen that rule over a kingdom. Her death was foretold that she would be eaten by dogs and according to history it did happen"
"Yes, you speak of Jezabel. But let me tell you, in the bible proverb 36 I believe, it speaks of a true woman, it gives her quality and even mention that she conducts business, so tell me, sir, if GOD had created us to be your slave, there would have never been a woman prophetess in the ancient time, nor would it have been women to be the first to discover that Jesus Christ was no longer in his tomb. King Salomon's mother had been his support until the day she died. We, women, play greats role. But with such role, comes great responsibilities"
Amir spoke up then "yes we are quite aware of a woman's role and abilities, thus the reason over time they have kept you in chains. The chains that have kept you bound have come free, for some places either way. In other places, it is yet to be done. But I believe that if every woman were allowed to rise above, our society could be better. But the way the world is turning, what was once considered moral, has been turned into a clown. It is a gift for a man to find a true woman at heart. But to find her and cherish that's where a lot of us has failed, thus monsters are created"
"Yes indeed Amir, finding a woman who can fight for her value and still keep her dignity has become quite rare," says Salam.
"It has become so because a lot of us have forgotten our true selves. We have let our self believe in foolish things without realizing that we had the power all along." Say, Sarah
Salam was more than satisfied with Sarah's reaction. She was a woman who knew what she wanted. She would not be easily led, for she would know on which side she belongs. She was a perfect match for his nephew. He needed someone like her and if he listens to his intuition, she just might be the one to destroy that cold wall inside of Amir's heart. "Would you believe me, if I were to tell you that my wife owns the best and biggest bakery within the country?"
Hearing so Sarah was a bit flagger basted wasn't he that was saying a woman shouldn't do this or that "yes I would hardly believe you"
"I can understand why, but it is the true"
"But"
"There's no but!"
"Oh yes there is, you were the one just saying all those words just a couple of minutes ago"
"Yes and?"
"How is that so?"
"I am one of those few, who believe that it is high time that our society evolves and that women should be given more opportunity. Unfortunately, we are not quite ready for that time and day. My wife may own the bakery; unfortunately, it is on my name for the sake of protecting her. My dear, you are on foreign land, where everything is different. That conversation I have undertaken with you as proven to me that you're a fighter. But I'll give you an advice; don't let everyone know your opinion. Keep your strength hidden and use it only when necessary. You'll need to learn to act with tact and diplomacy. Only in close quarters should we know your true thoughts. But outside is a jungle and I would hate to have to lose you soon."
Sarah didn't understand why Salam was telling her so, she understood, she was being tested but all those advises were sort of giving her the creeps. It is as if he knew something she didn't. She stole a glance at Amir, to see he was lost in his thoughts. He had stayed quiet throughout the whole debate only to intervene when he did but then had remained quiet.
She turned her attention back on the Minister of defense who had this knowing smile on his face. "Well it is high time pass my bedtime, I believe I should call it night. Dear Sarah, I bid you a good night and will see you soon"
Alfred was already at the door waiting on the Minister of defense, "come on Alfred, I am no stranger in this place, I know my way around here and I certainly know my room"
She could hear Alfred chuckling as-Salam continued to rattle on "sorry about my uncle, had I known he was going to pull this tonight..."
"You don't have to excuse yourself, your uncle did what he thought was best, thus to be honest with you, I feel like I was been tested"
"Probably your imagination and the fact that you're tired, you haven't stop yawning for the past 5 minutes," says a smiling Amir
Feeling a bit embarrassed, "I do feel a bit tired and it is only ten"
Getting up from his chair, Amir walked across to Sarah and offers his left hand. Depositing her glass, she took Amir offered hands, got up, but when she thought he was going to removed her hand, Amir entangles it with his and without waiting, tug her forward. All of a sudden her shyness came in full. What was he thinking she thought?
