The Forever Ended

2160 Words
Elari's POV Neither of us spoke. The silence between us felt heavier than any argument ever could. I looked away first. My eyes wandered around the apartment that had once felt more like home than my own. The couch where we'd spent countless nights arguing over which movie to watch. The dining table where we'd shared cheap takeout after his late meetings. The bookshelf I'd reorganized one rainy afternoon because he insisted his chaotic piles had "a system." Every corner held a memory. Every memory found a new way to hurt. "Elaris." His voice was quiet. "I'm sorry." I closed my eyes for a moment before looking back at him. "I don't want another apology, Evren." His shoulders sagged. "It's the only thing I have left." "No." I shook my head. "You had honesty." My voice remained calm, but each word felt like it was tearing through my chest. "You had countless chances." "You even had yesterday." His jaw tightened. "I tried." I gave a hollow smile. "No." "You wanted to." "That's not the same thing." The room fell silent again. After a long pause, he walked toward the window, staring out at the city below. "My father called an emergency board meeting last week." I didn't interrupt. "The company's in worse shape than anyone knows." "We've lost investors." "Our creditors want their money." "If something doesn't change soon..." His voice faltered. "There won't be an Arden Group left to save." For a long moment, I said nothing. "The Valerius family offered to help." I frowned. "Help?" "They'll invest enough to save the company." He swallowed hard. "But they wanted something in return." I already knew the answer. "The marriage." He nodded. "It isn't just a marriage." "It's a merger." "A business agreement." "A guarantee." The words sounded rehearsed. Like he'd repeated them so many times they'd almost become believable. A quiet laugh escaped me. "So..." "I lost, to a contract." His head snapped toward me. "No." His voice broke. "I chose wrong." The confession hung between us. "I know exactly what I've done." "I know what this looks like." "It looks like you're marrying another woman." His lips parted. Closed again. "It isn't that simple." "It is to me." He stepped toward me carefully, as though I might disappear if he moved too quickly. "I said yes because I thought I could protect everyone." "My parents." "The employees." "The company." Then his voice softened. "And you." I stared at him. "Me?" He nodded weakly. "I thought... if I carry this alone...you'd never have to suffer for it." A sad smile touched my lips. "You still don't understand." His brows knitted together. "You never had the right to decide what I could carry." He lowered his head. "I know." "No." I shook my head slowly. "You don't." "If you did..." "You would've trusted me enough to let me stand beside you." His breathing grew uneven. "You decided our future without me." "You decided what I deserved to know." "You decided when I'd find out." I held his gaze. "And somehow..." "You convinced yourself that it was love." He looked as though I'd struck him. "I never wanted to hurt you." A tear slid down my cheek. "But you did anyway." He stood frozen. Unable to defend himself. Unable to deny it. After a long silence, he whispered, "I'll marry her." The words landed like stones. "But I won't love her." "I'll always love you." "I'll save my family's company." "And when everything settles...I'll come back for you." I stared at him. Certain I'd heard him wrong. "I'll end the marriage." "We'll get married." "We'll have the life we planned." His voice trembled with desperation. "You just have to wait for me." The world seemed to stop. Wait. The word echoed inside my head. Wait... While he married another woman. Wait... While he built a life with someone else. Wait... Until he decided I could have my turn. I looked at him for a long time. At the man I'd loved with everything I had. I felt my throat tighten. "I loved you." The words came out softer than I'd intended. He flinched. "I still do." For a moment, neither of us breathed. "And that's exactly why I can't do this." Another tear slipped down my cheek. I didn't bother wiping it away. "I can't spend every day wondering if today is the day you'll finally come back." "I can't wake up every morning knowing you're waking up beside someone else." My voice trembled. "I can't watch you marry another woman and tell myself it's temporary." "Elaris..." "No." I shook my head slowly. "Do you know what you're asking me to become?" He stared at me. "You want me to wait while you're someone else's husband." "You want me to hold on to a future you've already given away." A bitter smile touched my lips. "And you call that love." Pain flashed across his face. "I thought..." "I know what you thought." I interrupted gently. "You thought I'd understand." "You thought I'd wait because I love you." I swallowed hard. "The sad part is..." "I probably would've." His eyes widened. "If you'd asked me this a month ago..." "I would've waited forever." "I would've convinced myself it was worth it." "I would've defended you every single day." A quiet laugh escaped me. "I loved you that much." His breathing became uneven. "But something changed today." I looked into his eyes. "Today, I realized love isn't supposed to ask this of me." The words hung between us. "I don't want half of someone's life." "I don't want borrowed time." "I don't want to be the woman waiting in the shadows until it's convenient for someone to love me." He closed his eyes. "I never wanted that." "But it's exactly what you're offering." His shoulders slowly slumped. "I never imagined this would happen." "I know." "I thought..." His voice cracked. "I thought I could fix it." I smiled sadly. "You can't." He looked at me as though he were seeing the truth for the first time. Some things... Once broken... Could never be put back together. He took one hesitant step toward me. Then another. "Elaris..." His hand reached for mine. Almost pleading. Almost desperate. Before his fingers could touch me... I stepped back. The movement was small. Barely noticeable. But it shattered something inside him. His hand remained suspended in the air. Slowly…He lowered it. His eyes followed the distance between us. The impossible distance growing between our hearts. "I can't." The words came out broken. "I can't stay here." His lips parted. As though he wanted to beg me not to leave. No words came. Maybe he finally understood. Some wounds couldn't be healed with promises. Not anymore. I turned toward the door. Every step felt heavier than the last. I'd walked through this apartment hundreds of times. Laughing. Smiling. Running into his arms after long days. Today... Every step felt like I was leaving pieces of myself behind. I wrapped my fingers around the door handle. I closed my eyes. This door had once welcomed me into the happiest days of my life. Now... It was asking me to leave them behind. Behind me, I heard him take a shaky breath. "Elaris." I didn't turn around. "If there's another life..." His voice broke. "I hope I choose you first." A sob rose in my throat. I swallowed it down. Because if I looked back... If I saw him one last time... I wasn't sure I'd have the strength to leave. Then, almost in a whisper, he said, "I'll come back for you." I closed my eyes. For a second... I remembered the man who had slipped a ring onto my finger. The man who had called me home. The man I'd believed would never let me go. Then I opened my eyes. Without saying a single word... I opened the door. Stepped into the hallway. And let it close behind me. I don't remember how I got home. I remember leaving the building. I remember sitting on the bus. I remember unlocking my apartment door. Everything else......was a blur. The apartment welcomed me with the same silence I'd left behind that morning. For a moment, I simply stood there. Still wearing the face mask. Still wearing the black cap. Still pretending that if I didn't move... None of this had happened. The door clicked shut behind me. Such a small sound. So ordinary. Yet somehow... It was enough. My bag slipped from my shoulder and hit the floor with a dull thud. I didn't look at it. My knees gave out next. The impact sent pain shooting through my legs, but I barely felt it. The first sob escaped before I could stop it. Then another. And another. Until I couldn't breathe. I covered my mouth, desperate to muffle the sound. It didn't help. The cries kept coming. The kind that made my entire body shake. "No..." I whispered between sobs. "No..." I curled into myself on the cold floor, hugging my knees as though I could somehow keep my heart from falling apart. It hurt. God... It hurt so much. Three years. Three years of loving him. Three years of believing every promise. Three years of dreaming about a future that disappeared because of one decision......that wasn't mine. I squeezed my eyes shut. Why? Why did it always end like this? The memories came anyway. The orphanage. The narrow metal bed that squeaked whenever I turned over. Winters spent pulling a blanket over my head because it was never thick enough to keep out the cold. Birthdays that passed like ordinary days. Christmas mornings when other children ran into waiting arms... While I stood by the window pretending I wasn't watching. My chest tightened. I was seven. I remembered tugging gently on one of the caretakers' sleeves. "Will my mommy come for me someday?" She smiled. But her eyes were filled with pity. "I don't know, sweetheart." Years later... Someone finally told me the truth. "You were left outside the orphanage." "Whoever brought you here didn't want you." Those words had followed me ever since. Didn't want you. Didn't choose you. Didn't come back. I spent years pretending they didn't matter. Telling myself I was enough. That one day... Someone would choose me and stay. Then I met Evren. He never looked at me with pity. Never asked about my past. Never made me feel ashamed of having no family. When he looked at me... I felt seen. When he smiled at me... I felt chosen. For the first time in my life... I believed I belonged somewhere. Not in an orphanage. Not in a borrowed apartment. Not on the outside looking in. I belonged... With him. A broken laugh escaped me. How foolish I'd been. I thought I'd finally outrun loneliness. I thought life had decided I'd suffered enough. I thought all those years of being unwanted had led me to someone who would never let me go. Instead... Life had only found a new way to abandon me. A fresh wave of sobs crashed through me. I buried my face in my arms. "Why wasn't I enough?" The question slipped out before I could stop it. "I loved you." "I loved you with everything I had." "So why wasn't I enough?" No one answered. Of course no one did. The apartment remained silent. Just like the orphanage had been. Just like every birthday. Just like every Christmas. Just like every night I'd cried myself to sleep as a little girl, wondering what was so wrong with me that no one had come back. Maybe... Maybe this was all life had planned for me. To keep losing people. To keep loving people who couldn't choose me. To keep surviving things that should've broken me. I wrapped my arms tighter around myself. There was no one else to do it. No one to tell me everything would be okay. No one to wipe away my tears. No one to say, "I'm here." Just me. Just like always. The crying slowly faded into silent shivers. My throat burned. My head throbbed. My eyes ached from crying. I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. Yesterday... Evren had been lying beside me. Laughing. Complaining about work. Kissing my forehead before leaving for the office. Yesterday... Forever had felt so close. Today... Forever belonged to someone else. A tear slid quietly into my hair. I didn't wipe it away. Because I finally understood something. The little girl who had waited by the orphanage gate... The woman who had waited for Evren to call... They were the same person. Still hoping. Still believing. Still waiting for someone to choose them. I closed my eyes. And let myself grieve not only the man I'd lost... But the little girl who had spent her whole life believing that one day... Someone would stay.
