Chapter 3

A doctor soon rushed in with several nurses in tow. Dr. Lincoln Davis was Lucian’s buddy and had always been his go-to guy for any medical issues. Lincoln nodded at me as he passed by. I leaned against the wall and kept my head down. Although she scalded herself, I knew that she would somehow manipulate the issue and Lucian would put the blame on me. This was all a ruse by her to prove to me her place in Lucian’s heart. In fact, there was no need for her to do this as I already knew that I was insignificant to him, with or without her presence. The nurses carefully cleaned and bandaged her hand as if she was their most precious patient. It appeared like everyone was trying to gain her favor for fear of being at the receiving end of her complaints. I watched the drama coldly and finally looked at Lucian, who appeared so anxious that she was injured. He looked like his heart was aching because she was in pain. Each of Viki’s painful gasp caused him to wince as if he was the one feeling the pain. I had watched enough and decided to leave. After leaving the hospital, I walked aimlessly along a path at the city park. The playful barks of dogs snapped me back to reality. I realized that I should rest for the sake of my baby. I walked out of the park and took a taxi home. Just after I arrived home, I laid down to rest for a short while when I received a call from the Vega residence’s steward reminding me to go over for dinner with my father-in-law. I got up from bed, washed up, and put on some light makeup to hide my dark circles. When I arrived at the residence, everyone else was present except for Lucian. It seemed that Viki was really able to keep him back at the hospital. However, Viki did not know that she was actually making things difficult for Lucian. This could very well be a double-edged sword that cut both ways. I took out my phone and sent a text message without hesitation: “Lucian, remember to show up at Vega residence on time. If you don’t, then I will talk to Dad tonight and reveal what Viki and you had been doing recently.” I knew that if I did not threaten him, he would remain in the hospital and stay with Viki and I would not be able to talk to him alone. Although Lucian loved Viki, his father could never accept her. Otherwise, he would not have objected to them and ensured that they broke up. As expected, Lucian arrived just before dinner began. As soon as he entered the villa, he immediately stared daggers at me. If looks could kill, I would have died a thousand times over. I knew that he would have manhandled me and yelled at me if we were alone at home. However, he held back his outburst because of the presence of the other family members. It was calm and quiet at the dinner table. Mr. Vega was pleased to see us as an amicable couple. Although he also knew that there was no true love between us, he was satisfied that we were still together. After the meal, I walked over to Lucian, who was smoking on the balcony. I whispered, “Let’s find a place so that I can talk to you in private.” I looked up only to see him staring menacingly at me with narrowed eyes. He exhaled his smoke into my face as if he was disgusted by my presence. The next second, he stormed out, and I quickly scurried behind him to the garden. He stopped and said without turning around to face me, “Get on with it.” His cold tone seemed determined to cast me as far away from his side as he could. It was as if the intimacy we had a couple of days ago was purely physical. “Lucian, do we really have to divorce?” Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine that my marriage would fail. I always thought that I would be a dutiful wife and loving mother. I refused to become one of the statistics. Lucian scoffed as if the answer was obvious and he had no patience to answer me. “Do you think that there is still a need for us to live a lie?” “Lucian, after all these years, don’t you love me at all?” I could not resist asking this question. I needed his confirmation. Lucian scoffed coldly, threw his cigarette on the ground, and stomped it forcefully. “What makes you think that I ever loved you? If it wasn’t for the old man who forced me to break up with Viki, do you think that I would have laid my eyes on you? Don’t you know that it was he who forced me to marry you?” Lucian’s words seemed like a dagger that plunged repeatedly into my beating heart. I stared at him in disbelief. So, the three years of intimacy were all faked? My eyes were now red and I was forcibly holding back the tears. However, my heart still held on to the last traces of hope. I calmed myself and said, “Three years of marriage and I still cannot compare to her? Why don’t we have a baby? Grandma has always been looking forward to us having a baby.” I decided to test Lucian when I thought of the child in my belly. If he was also looking forward to the arrival of this child, then I would tell him the happy news. I looked at Lucian hopefully and even reached out to tug on his sleeve, expecting him to nod his head in agreement. “A baby? Are you dreaming? I don’t like children, especially when it’s born by you.” He said it so hurtfully that my heart died. If he hated my baby so much, would he force me to abort the baby if he knew that I was pregnant? I immediately tensed up when I thought of this possibility. I must not let Lucian know about my pregnancy! When he noticed that I was silent, he said impatiently, “It’s decided. I will have my lawyer contact you.” He walked off immediately as if he could not bear to be in my presence for a moment longer. I went home to our bedroom in a daze and waited until midnight for Lucian to come home. He did not come home. Why would he come back to this house if he was so determined to divorce me? Tears flowed when I realized that the man I had loved for so many years was so ruthless and merciless to me. I cried myself to sleep that night. The next day, I felt dizzy as soon as I got up from bed. I became worried about my baby due to all the recent emotional trauma I had endured. I decided to go to my gynecologist for a checkup, just to be sure. As I sat in the waiting room, I felt so lonely as the other pregnant ladies were accompanied by their husbands. I reached out, felt my belly, and quietly said to my baby, “Darling, Mommy’s so sorry that I can’t bring you into a happy family.” Tears immediately flowed from my eyes and I quickly lowered my head to hide from the other couples. It was my turn to be examined and when the doctor noticed that I was alone, he shook his head silently and started the ultrasonic scan. After the series of tests, I went to an open window at the stairway for some fresh air while I waited for the reports. Just as I was lost in my thoughts, I suddenly heard a familiar voice. “Lucian, I’m really fine, you don’t have to worry so much about me!” It was Viki’s voice! This was the obstetrics and gynecology department. Was she here for a checkup too? My face turned pale and a chill ran down my spine when I realized what was going on. I walked gingerly to the stairway door and hid myself as I peeped through a gap in the door. At first glance, I saw Lucian carefully supporting Viki, as if she were the most precious thing in the world! I held back my raging emotions and quietly listened. “Lucian, I’m fine and so is the baby because the baby’s father is with me,” Viki said coyly and then snuggled herself into his embrace. I immediately recalled what he said last night about not liking children. He must have been having s****l relations with Viki and ended up getting her pregnant! “Even if you’re fine, my heart still aches for you. You’ve been through so much these past two days. You should rest more.” I had never seen Lucian’s gentle side, not to mention hearing him speak to me in such a tender voice. At that moment, I felt as if my heart had been ripped apart by two ruthless hands. Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and I immediately wiped my tears. “Ms. Pierce, what are you doing here?” Lincoln asked when he saw me in the stairwell. His voice was so loud that they also heard him. Lucian pushed the door open and frowned the moment he saw me. “What are you doing here?” I did not want anyone to know what I was doing there, especially not Lucian. Since Viki was now pregnant, he definitely did not want the child in my belly anymore. “I came to see the doctor to refill my prescription.” I hastily came up with an excuse but Lucian did not care for my explanation and immediately went back to Viki’s side. However, this could not fool Dr. Davis and I noticed him looking solemnly at me before turning to look at Viki. She reached out and covered her belly as I looked toward her. I was surprised that she appeared rather uneasy when I looked at her. Perhaps it was because I was still legally married to Lucian and she could now be termed as his mistress. “Lucian, why are you here?” My heart was still holding on to the hope of hearing a different answer. I hoped that what I just heard them say was just a figment of my imagination. Lucian’s handsome face froze awkwardly when he heard what I asked. Viki was quick to reply to him. “Lucian is here with me for my antenatal checkup.” She spoke with a tone as if she was the rightful wife. Although my heart was bleeding, I was still unwilling to give up. “Lucian, why are you accompanying other women for antenatal checkups?” Although everyone knew about Lucian’s feelings for Viki, my question was awkward for everyone except for her. Lucian evaded my question and said, “What’s your point?” I sneered. I knew that whatever point I wanted to raise was immaterial to him. However, it meant a lot to me. He had just terminated all my hopes and desire to reconcile with him. It also killed my heart for the marriage. Viki looked at the time and gasped, “Oh, it’s time for my checkup. Lucian, let’s go.” Lucian nodded and helped Viki walk toward the examination room. She grinned smugly at me with a victorious smile. She had indeed triumphed as she had won over Lucian. Tears flowed uncontrollably from my eyes and I realized that someone was handing me paper napkins. I sobbed silently with my head bowed, took the napkins from him, and thanked him. Lincoln sighed and said, “Ms. Pierce, sometimes it’s better for you to let go.” “Yeah...” I said in resignation. During the three years of our marriage, Lucian had never brought me to his friends’ parties. All of his friends, like Lincoln, called me “Ms. Pierce”. Lincoln hesitated and then asked, “Are you also here for a maternity checkup?” I almost forgot. I wiped the tears from my eyes, looked at Lincoln’s eyes, and pled, “Dr. Davis, please don’t tell him, alright?” Lincoln heaved a long sigh before nodding. I composed myself, collected my medical report, and left the hospital. I then called my lawyer and said, “Bruce, please come to my place and we’ll talk about divorce to visit me and draw up the divorce papers for me.”
