Chapter 4

I dragged my tired body home after another mentally exhausting day. The maid saw me enter the villa and immediately prepared dinner for me. Although I had no appetite, I forced myself to eat something for the sake of the baby. Bruce arrived soon after I had my dinner to discuss the divorce. I braced myself and discussed with him the details before retiring to the bedroom for the night. I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. The next day, I started packing my things as soon as I had my breakfast. Since I had decided to divorce, there was no point in staying in Lucian’s house anymore. I did not realize that I had accumulated so many things after three years of marriage. However, I was uninterested in most of them. All I needed was some of my daily clothes and some personal belongings. I was packed and ready to leave. Suddenly, I heard some commotion coming from downstairs. It appeared that someone was approaching the bedroom. My heart began to pound in hopeful anticipation that Lucian had come back to stop me from leaving. He had not been home for several days. I rushed downstairs hoping to see him. “Elena!” Madam Vega greeted me warmly from the living room. My heart sank when it was not the person I had hoped to see. I braved a smile, walked over to her, and said coyly, “Granny, why didn’t you tell me in advance that you were coming?” “Last night I dreamed that you and Lucian had a fight. I was so worried that I had to come immediately to make sure that rascal isn’t bullying you!” She waved me over to sit by her side. Her words struck me like a bolt of lightning. Surely Lucian had not revealed his intentions to divorce me to the rest of the family. How could Grandma have known? Grandma always liked me and treated me very well. She was always very concerned about my well-being. She would be very upset if she knew that we were getting a divorce. I became a little emotional when I thought of this but forcefully controlled my emotions and said, “Granny, dreams are typically the opposite of reality, we’re fine!” She smiled wryly and said, “Of course, I’m not worried. I’ve already decided to stay with you for a few days. You don’t mind an old woman coming here uninvited, do you?” I was momentarily stunned by what Grandma said. If she stayed here, she would soon find out that Lucian had been spending his nights outside. However, she did not give me any chance to refuse her. She had already directed the servants to take her suitcase upstairs to the guest room. She then dragged me to our bedroom. I wanted to stop her but I could not come up with a good reason to do so. When she came to our bedroom, her expression changed immediately when she saw the suitcases on the floor. “Elena, where are you going?” she asked. I stammered, not knowing what to say. She turned to ask the servant, and I shot a wink at her, only to have Grandma notice it. “Tell me the truth! How dare you all lie to me?” she said furiously. I knew that there was no point in hiding anymore so I said, “Grandma, I’m divorcing Lucian!” The moment I said it, I felt as though a huge weight had been taken off my shoulders. “What’s going on? Did that rascal Lucian bully you?” Madam Vega jabbed the floor heavily with her walking cane and instructed the steward to call Lucian and tell him to come home immediately. I could not stop this series of events and knew that the consequences would be dire. However, since Lucian was so determined to divorce me, this would come out sooner or later. When Lucian stepped into the living room, I was sitting on the sofa beside his grandmother. He approached Grandma meekly while she grunted angrily. Lucian narrowed his eyes slightly at me before asking her, “Grandmother, what’s so urgent that you need to see me immediately?” Although Lucian had a strained relationship with his father, he respected his grandmother for taking good care of him. “Don’t you know what have you done? How dare you ask me in return?” she growled. I did not tell her what happened between us but she skillfully asked him instead. Lucian immediately looked at me coldly when he heard what his grandmother said. He grabbed my wrist and said to her, “Grandma, please give us a moment.” I did not want to get into an argument with Lucian in front of my grandmother. So I went with him to a small garden outside the living room. “Elena, you’re really something! How dare you go behind my back and tell my grandmother?” He pointed his finger aggressively at me. “What have you to worry about if your conscience is clear?” I said confidently. “What did you say to Grandma?” Lucian appeared worried not because of the divorce but did not know what they would do to Viki. I forced down my emotions and said calmly, “I just told her that we are getting a divorce.” Although that was the truth, Lucian thought that I was trying to cause him and Viki trouble. “You’re telling tales to grandmother so that she would force me, right?” Lucian coldly grabbed my neck and began to squeeze. “If I hadn’t been pressured and threatened back then, do you think I would have married you? Now you’re using the same method to get me to stop divorcing you? Elena, I really underestimated how cunning you are!” I was being choked by him and instinctively reached out to swat away his hand. However, he tightened his grip on my throat which caused me to weaken due to the lack of oxygen. Just as I was about to pass out, I mustered all my strength and shouted, “I didn’t mention anything about Viki to Grandma!” “What Viki?!” Grandmother said sternly from behind me and then yelled, “Rascal! What the hell are you doing? Let go of Elena!” Lucian finally released me and I was left coughing and gasping for air. Grandma staggered over to Lucian and began hitting him with her cane. “Are you crazy? How can you treat your wife like that?” Lucian did not dodge her assaults and just stood in place taking every one of her blows. I rushed forward to stop the beating. “Grandma, don’t get so worked up. It’s not good for your...” “Do not plea for him! I heard it all. Has that woman come back again? Lucian, what the hell is wrong with you?” Grandmother knew about Viki. She just did not know that Lucian and Viki had maintained contact and begun seeing each other recently. Lucian was expressionless as he said, “I’m determined to get divorced. Grandma, don’t get upset over this.” When I saw grandmother’s chest heaving rapidly, I quickly said, “Grandma, don’t be so angry. We’re incompatible.” When Lucian saw that his grandmother’s face began to turn pale, he quickly supported her back to the living room, sat her down on the sofa, and brought her a glass of water. She waved him dismissively and said, “Cut out the act. Don’t I know how you are and Elena’s personality?” I stood to one side not knowing what I should say. Lucian appeared willing to listen to her criticisms and wanted to say something, but was interrupted by Grandma. “Starting tomorrow, Elena, you will work at the Vega Group!” Lucian’s expression changed immediately he objected. “This is highly inappropriate!” “How is it inappropriate? Can’t Elena be your secretary?” Lucian glared at me coldly as if he was warning me that there would be consequences for what I had done. He then stormed out in a rage without saying anything else. After he left, I heaved a long sigh and sat beside my grandmother. “Granny, why did you do that? It’s useless.” She moved closer to me and pulled me into her embrace. “Silly child, grandma is creating opportunities for you! You’ve had marriage for three years. How can you give up just like that? That boy is just temporarily fascinated by that woman. When you spend more time with him every day, there will definitely be a turnaround.” Since this was her arrangement, I decided to give myself one last chance to save my marriage so that I could give the child in my belly a complete family. Early the next morning. Madam Vega arranged for someone to take me to the Vega Group. After entering the company, I went to the HR department for the onboarding formalities and then I was taken to the president’s office on the 30th floor. The current secretary, Frances, explained to me my daily duties, and just as I was about to sit down at my desk, I heard a familiar female voice. “Lucian, didn’t you promise to take me out for dinner yesterday?” I was startled and tensed up. While I fully expected to run into Viki here, I did not expect Lucian to be so blatant as to enter and leave the company with her in his arms. As the two of them approached his office, they saw me sitting at a table outside his office. Lucian’s handsome smile disappeared the moment he saw me. He completely ignored me and entered his office with Viki in his arms. There were other staff around and I did not want them to see that I was affected by that display. I continued to read up on the company regulations and other relevant documents. Shortly after, Viki came out of the office, walked over to me, and said with a grin, “A cup of coffee and a glass of warm milk for me. Bring it into the office immediately!” “I’m not your maid, the pantry is over there. Do it yourself,” I said coldly. Viki pretended to look surprised and leaned over to whisper to me, “Elena, I didn’t ask you to do this. It was Lucian who wanted me to come out and inform you that this is what secretaries are supposed to do.” Viki’s innocent tone added to the confusion. When she realized that I was dumbfounded, she turned around and sashayed away back into the office. I took a deep breath, sighed, and ignored the strange looks and comments from the other colleagues. I got up and went straight to the pantry.
