I made a cup of coffee according to how Lucian liked it and took it to his office.
When I opened the door and entered, Viki was cuddling in Lucian’s arms. She said angrily when she saw me, “Why didn’t you knock?!”
Lucian continued to hug her as he looked at me with narrowed eyes.
“Where’s the cup of milk?” he snarled when he saw that I only had a cup of coffee in my hands.
After putting down the cup of coffee on the table, I took a few steps back and said, “My job is to serve the president, not to serve the president’s mistress.”
“Since know that your job is to serve me, then you should do as I demand.” Lucian snorted coldly.
“Fine, if Grandma and Dad agree for me to serve your mistress, then I will do as you wish.” I knew that he did not like it when I mention about grandmother and dad. As soon as I said that, he would think that I was using them to threaten him.
As expected, he fumed angrily but I just turned around to leave the office.
After returning to my seat, I clenched my fists and took a few deep breaths to calm down and compose myself before getting back to work.
Not long after, Viki walked out of his office, tossed a few documents on my desk, and said, “Ms. Pierce, please analyze these data and then send the documents to the risk control department.” She then turned around and walked back to Lucian’s office.
I looked through the document and the data looked confusing.
Frances took the initiative to come toward me when she heard what Viki said. She had always been friendly toward me when I visited the company previously. Thus, I asked, “Frances, how should this report be...?”
Frances took over the document and recognized the data. She then said, “Ma’am, this report has always been done by Viki. Why is this job given to you?”
I was shocked, I only knew Lucian and Viki were having an affair. I just thought that Lucian took her to the office. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that Lucian would arrange for Viki to work beside him!
I did not even notice it before!
Seeing that I was stunned, Frances said softly, “She had been working here for quite a while. However, we were warned by the president not to talk about this or we would be fired.”
I could not believe how blatant Lucian was and how much the staff here had gossiped about our situation. I was gripped with emotions but once again, I forced them down and focused on learning from Frances how should this report be done properly.
With Frances’ patient guidance, I was able to figure out how the report was done.
Viki then walked over to me after she got a glass of water from the pantry. She looked at Frances and said sarcastically, “Why does a talent need help with such an easy report?”
“Weren’t you the same when you just started? There were lots of mistakes in the report when you first started.” Frances retorted Viki in return.
Viki’s expression changed and said smugly, “Choose carefully whose b***h you want to be. If you choose the wrong master, then your life will be miserable in the future.”
Frances’ puffed up angrily and was about to retort but I held grabbed her hand and gestured her to simmer down.
I understood what she meant and replied sarcastically, “Wow, you’re not even the legitimate wife of the president and you want to assert yourself?”
Viki slammed the glass of water on the table and was about to throw a tantrum when the door of the president’s office opened suddenly.
Her expression immediately changed and said softly, “Elena, just ask if you need my help, why do you have to be so mean to me?” Her eyes instantly turned red and watered up as she looked at me with quivering lips as if I had bullied her.
When Lucian saw this, he came to her defense immediately and said through gritted teeth, “If you can’t even do a simple report, what good are you for?”
It was my first day and indeed I found some of the tasks difficult. However, I was trying my best to figure out how to do it as best as I could.
Why could he not give me some time to get used to my work? Was he so hell-bent to embarrass me? I looked at him incredulously and shook my head.
When he saw that I did not respond, he bluntly said, “Since you can’t do these reports, then don’t bother doing them. Now that Viki isn’t feeling well, your job is to take care of her!”
After he finished issuing his order, he must have remembered what I mentioned earlier and continued, “Piss off if you don’t agree. I’ll explain to Grandma.”
When I thought of Grandma’s expectations of me, I clenched my fists and swallowed my pride. Since this was my last chance to remain with Lucian, I might as well do whatever I could. Otherwise, I would have failed without completing even a day at work.
I agreed to take care of Viki. Lucian rolled his eyes scornfully at me and then turned to Viki and said gently, “I have a meeting to attend later. You can order them to buy whatever you want to eat. Just wait in the office until I come back.”
I watched as my husband kissed another woman on the forehead before striding off with a smile.
How ridiculous!
Viki looked at me smugly and went into the president’s office to rest.
I continued with my other work and was exhausted by lunchtime. I had a quick bite and finally had some time to rest.
I went to a small garden outside the building where there was no one around and I was finally able to relax. It had only been a morning and I was already losing confidence in myself as I watched Lucian and Viki being so close to each other.
Not long after I sat down on the garden bench, I heard the clattering of high heels toward me and turned my head to see that it was Viki.
I stood up with a straight face and was ready to leave, but she called out to me, “Stop!”
I tried to ignore her but what she said next stopped me in my tracks. “I know that you’re pregnant!”
Viki quickly walked up to me, folded her arms over her chest, and said, “Do you think that you can hide it from me?”
I turned to look at her in surprise. I did not expect Viki to find out about it. However, Lucian did not appear to know about it and I think that it was not in her interest to tell him. I was relieved when I realized this.
“Don’t think that you can salvage your marriage just because you’re pregnant.” Viki touched her belly and said, “I’m also pregnant with Lucian’s baby. Don’t presume that Lucian will change his mind just because of a baby!”
“There is no need for you to warn me. You should spend your efforts holding onto Lucian instead of competiting with me!” The thought of Viki’s pregnancy made my heart ache even more.
I did not want to be in her presence for a second longer. I tried to leave but my wrist was grabbed by her.
Viki said, “The reason why I looked for you was for something.”
It was lunchtime, what could Viki want from me?
I stopped and turned around to face her. “Lucian called and said that he needed a document to be taken to the 29th floor of the building next door. It’s not far away, you can just walk there.”
I frowned when I heard this demand. He could have called for a courier service for something as mundane as this. Viki was obviously doing this on purpose.
When she saw that I was unwilling to do so, she said, “Lucian was worried about my condition and did not want me to deliver it. He specifically asked for you. I’ve already brought all the documents for you.”
Since she invoked Lucian’s name, I naturally could not refuse.
It was midday on a sunny summer’s day. The heat was sweltering and my forehead was already perspiring as I sat under the tree shade.
It was just a short walk so I grabbed the documents and walked briskly over to the next building. I walked for about 10 minutes under the hot sun and finally came to the lobby when I received a call from Viki. “Oh, sorry Elena, I missed one of the documents! Please come back and get it!”
I was furious. Viki was toying with me!
At that moment, I noticed a slight pain in my abdomen. I reached and held onto my baby bump and went back out into the hot sun.
Back at the Vega Towers, Viki handed me the document with a smile and said, “I’m so sorry to trouble you to make another trip.”
By the time I took over the document, I was pale and weak. When she saw that I was struggling to walk, she urged me from behind. “The documents are urgent, hurry up!”
I was determined not to give her an excuse to blame me for not delivering the documents. Thus, I ignored the growing pain in my abdomen and staggered out of the company building.
As soon as the blinding sun shined on my face, I felt the surrounding spin and I gradually blacked out.
When I came to, I was greeted by the pungent smell of disinfectant and the white walls of a hospital.
The moment I regained consciousness, I immediately reached for my belly but then I realized something was wrong. I felt sore internally and could hardly sit up on the bed. I looked desperately around and saw a person lying on the edge of the hospital bed. He was awakened by my frantic movements.
It was Lincoln! Why was he here?
“I...” Lincoln looked at me apologetically and I immediately realized what had happened.
My eyes instantly welled up with tears and asked with a quivering voice, “What happened to my baby?”
“Ms. Pierce, the baby...” Lincoln paused for a moment and then reassured me. “You are still young. You’ll have other opportunities to have a child.”
I felt as though my soul was sucked out of my body. I was a cold empty shell and everything around me seemed to stop. There was only one thought swirling in my head, “My baby was gone”.
Tears instantly flowed from my eyes and I desperately needed someone. “Where’s Lucian?”
On hearing my question, Lincoln hesitated for a moment before replying, “Lucian went with Viki for a prenatal...”
I knew what Lucian was doing before Lincoln finished his sentence. Apart from spending time with Viki, what else could he be doing? He certainly would not be accompanying his wife!
I clenched my fists tightly and pounded the hospital bed with indignation as my heart was overwhelmed by the intense pain of losing my child.
The pain in my heart made me curl up on the bed as the pillow soaked up my tears.
Bang! The door of the hospital room was violently pushed open.
“Elena, how can you be so cruel?” Lucian rushed forward, grabbed me by the collar, and lifted me up.
“You vicious b***h! Do you know that you almost caused Viki to miscarry!” Lucian’s words shocked me as it was exactly what Viki had done to me.
My heart died completely the moment I heard his accusations. It turned out that no matter what happened, I was always wrong and she was always right. It was always my fault regardless of who was being injured.
“Calm down, Lucian!” Lincoln grabbed Lucian to get him to let go of me.
However, Lucian became angrier instead and yelled, “Don’t you pretend to be the victim here!”
I knelt on the bed and continued to wail as I faced the man I used to love. After loving him for so many years, I finally saw his true colors and my love for him ended right there and then.
Lincoln tried to explain. “Ms. Pierce also had a ...”
“Dr. Davis! Stop! There is nothing left to say!”
I suddenly stopped crying, took the pillow to wipe away my tears, took a deep breath, and declared. “We’ll divorce today. Get the lawyer over here, right now!”
Lucian’s POV
Three years ago, I was forced by my father to break up with my girlfriend Viki. When I did not agree to it, not only did he affect my work, but he also threatened to do something to Viki and her family!
I wanted to defy my father, but Viki eventually left the country for the sake of my career.
In order to take over the helm of the Vega Group, I agreed to marry a lady of my father’s choice. She was Elena, the eldest daughter of the Pierce family.
After the marriage, although I could sense her love for me, I was not interested in her and only felt a strong rejection of her. My father chose her because the marriage would benefit our family business as the Pierce family was very influential and strong in the industry.
Despite my obvious disgust and coldness toward her, it did not affect her expectations of me in any way.
She even naively became a full-time housewife, prepared my daily meals, drew my bath after work, cooked a midnight snack, and even took massage lessons so that she could massage my shoulders and neck after work. She thought that all these menial chores that a simple servant could do could touch me and make me fall in love with her. It was a misplaced dream.
In the third year after the wedding, Viki came back from abroad and we unexpectedly reunited. On my repeated questioning, she tearfully confessed that she had a very bad time abroad and suffered throughout the three years. I was heartbroken to know that she had suffered due to my family issues. I was determined not to let her suffer again.
When I suggested to Elena for a divorce, she shamelessly harassed me and even complained to my grandmother. In the end, my grandmother arranged for her to work in my office so that she could keep an eye on me.
That useless woman could not even deliver a bunch of documents. If it was not for the help of the other assistants, the project would have been lost to our competitors.
She was not even there when I got back to the office. When I finished the prenatal checkup with Viki, I saw Elena who then confronted me and insisted on an immediate divorce.
I was relieved and waited for the divorce to be finalized. I never went back to the house where we lived for three years.
One day, I returned to the villa to find some information about a previous business deal. I accidentally found Elena’s diary in the drawer of the study.
After fondling the cover of the diary, I hesitated for a moment before opening it. The first page described how we first met but I had no memory of it!
It was at Elena’s eighteen birthday.
I had just returned from studying abroad, and as soon as I arrived home, Grandma insisted that I accompany her to the Pierce family for a party.
At that time, I was already quite tired due to the jet lag but I still went with my grandmother. After exchanging pleasantries with the hosts, I took a glass of wine and went to the garden to escape from the rowdy celebrations.
It was there that I heard the sobs of a young girl coming from within the bushes.
Initially, I wanted to ignore it, but I could not bear to hear the persistent sobs. So, I followed the source of the sound and found her.
Elena, whose cheeks were still chubby had her makeup all smudged by her tears. She heard me approaching and looked up at me like a startled rabbit.
Perhaps it was the beautiful setting and that pathetic-looking girl that made me uncharacteristically patient with a girl I had met for the first time.
She seemed desperate to confide in someone why she was crying on her eighteenth birthday. Elena’s father wanted her to follow the course he had set for her. She was unwilling and unable to convince her father to let her make her choices in life.
Even on the day of her birthday, a heated argument broke out between them which was why she snuck into the garden to cry.
I only remembered that I had comforted her, but I never thought that my words of comfort would mean so much to her at that time.
The diary meticulously recorded her journey of falling in love with me, marrying me, and living with me after the marriage.
When I read how happy she was and how eager she was to win my love, I began to be overwhelmed by a complex mix of emotions.
