Chapter 7: She Has Returned

431 Words
Meanwhile, Lu Shaotian had specially bought gifts and accompanied Leng Lingshuang back to the Leng family home. "Dad, I'm back." Leng Lingshuang greeted her father before politely nodding at the woman beside him. "Aunt Xu." Xu Meilian was her father Leng Nanfeng's third wife—young, beautiful, and so well-maintained she looked more like Lingshuang's sister than stepmother. Since marrying her, Leng Nanfeng had handed over all business matters to his eldest son and retired. Unfortunately, their visit today was poorly timed—neither Lingshuang's elder brother nor sister were home. A pang of disappointment struck her. Perhaps her siblings still couldn't fully accept her presence. Though she'd lived cautiously under their disdain for five years, she bore no resentment. Being able to live with her father was blessing enough. "Shaotian, I need to speak with you." After minimal pleasantries, Leng Nanfeng immediately took his son-in-law to the study. Left with little to do, Lingshuang retreated to her old room to pack some clothes for the Lu residence. Curious about their conversation, Xu Meilian tiptoed to the study door with a fruit platter—and nearly dropped it at what she overheard. "Did you catch the bastards who hurt Lingshuang?" Leng Nanfeng demanded bluntly. "No." Shaotian shook his head. "Hmph. Let me make this clear—the Lengs might not match the Lu family's influence, but I'm no coward! Whoever harmed my daughter will pay with their life!" "Father-in-law, I promise I'll uncover the truth." Leng Nanfeng hesitated. "There's... something else." Shaotian frowned. "What is it?" "Tell me honestly—what are your true feelings for Lingshuang?" Shaotian froze. --- That evening, Lu Shaotian seemed troubled as they left the Leng household. Lingshuang studied his tense profile. "What did you and Dad discuss earlier?" "Nothing important." "But you've been upset since then." She took a deep breath. Knowing her father's protectiveness, he'd likely pressured Shaotian about the k********g. "Shaotian, don't take Dad's words to heart. If this matter truly bothers you, we can call off—" "Enough!" he snapped. "I said it doesn't matter. Never mention it again!" She recoiled. In all their years together, he'd never raised his voice at her. What had changed? Just then, his phone screen lit up with a notification. "Shaotian, you have a message." She instinctively picked it up to hand to him. He snatched it back violently after one glance—his face draining of color. A single line glared from the screen: **"I'm back. Need to see you now."** *She* had returned. Those five words unleashed a tsunami in his heart. ---
