Chapter 8: Always Running Into Him

540 Words
Leng Lingshuang was completely baffled. "Shaotian, what's wrong?" "Don't touch my phone without permission," he said coldly. "I'm sorry, I was just handing it to you." The traffic light had turned green, but Lu Shaotian didn't accelerate. Instead, he abruptly turned and pulled over. "Lingshuang, go home by yourself. I have something to take care of." "It's the middle of the night—where are you going?" "Get out." His command was brief and icy, devoid of any warmth. Still confused, Leng Lingshuang had no choice—he had already opened the car door, leaving her no room to argue. How was she supposed to get home alone at this hour? It would be nearly impossible to find a taxi! But Lu Shaotian couldn’t even wait to drop her off first. The moment she stepped out, he sped away without a second glance. "Shaotian, my bag is still in the car—" She chased after him a few steps, but he didn’t stop. *What the hell is going on?* The night wind was chilly, and Leng Lingshuang, dressed only in a thin summer dress, shivered as she stood on the roadside. She had no choice but to start walking toward the Lu residence, hoping to flag down a taxi along the way. But the streets were deserted—not a single car or pedestrian in sight. To make matters worse, her phone was still in Shaotian’s car. She couldn’t even call a ride. The Lu home was at least five or six kilometers away. Was she really going to have to walk the entire distance? Just as she was about to despair, a black car slowed to a stop beside her. The window rolled down, revealing the last face she ever wanted to see. "Get in," Helmuth said coldly. Leng Lingshuang turned and walked the other way. She’d rather sleep on the streets than step foot in his car! But Helmuth was faster. He flung the door open, caught up to her in a few strides, and forcibly dragged her back, shoving her into the passenger seat. "Let me go!" His domineering actions made her burn with humiliation. "If it weren’t for me, you’d be spending the night on the streets," Helmuth scoffed. "Your precious fiancé has already abandoned you, Leng Lingshuang. Right now, I’m your only option." "As if I’d ever ask for your help!" she spat. "Why do I keep running into you? Are you *following* me, Helmuth?" "Yes." His blunt admission caught her off guard. Little did she know, Helmuth had been keeping an eye on her ever since uncovering the truth from the kidnappers earlier that day—though even he couldn’t explain why he cared so much about her safety. The car’s interior was cramped, forcing them into close proximity in the front seat. Suddenly feeling parched, he tugged impatiently at his collar and leaned in. She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for his assault. But Helmuth only chuckled and pulled back, returning to his seat without touching her. The engine roared to life—but instead of heading toward the Lu or Leng residences, the car veered onto an unfamiliar road. Leng Lingshuang tensed. "Where are you taking me?" "A hotel." ---
