Ares’s POV
I was jolted awake by the pounding on my door, “DUDE! It’s ten o’clock! You are going to miss the ball if you don’t come down NOW!” Alec shouts from the other side. “What are you doing in there?”
“Huh?” I shake my head and rub my eyes, realizing I’ve done it again, only no release. This was going to be a rough night with me all hot and bothered. I begin stretching and rolling out of the bed to go open the door. “I was sleeping!” That’s when I realized I actually slept quite well. I guess all my muscles relaxing allowed me to sleep more than normal. I rushed to the bathroom to put a wet, cold wash cloth around my standing soldier to make it stop throbbing. I also didn’t want Alec to think I was beating off again. Goddess he can be so annoying at times.
Alec was standing in the doorway when I opened it, but I quickly rushed to the bathroom before he could see my current situation. When I came back out of the bathroom he gave me a once over and said, “Geez man! You look like crap! Hurry up and get ready! We are missing all the fun!”
“Go ahead without me, I’ll be down shortly. I know you want to wet your whistle, so go - have fun!” I tell Alec before shimmying into my slacks.
“You don’t have to tell me twice! See you on the other side man! Good luck to you!” Alec declared as he bolted out the door.
I laughed and continued to get ready. Alec was my beta but he was also very comfortable with the opposite s*x and had a charm about him that always led to some she-wolf hanging on his arm for the night and eventually warming his bed.
I was late...to something else. Luckily, my father wouldn’t know I was late since mated wolves weren’t allowed in the ballroom. I just had to make sure to avoid him in the common areas otherwise he would know I was late and then he would be pissed.
Once I was dressed and ready, I made my way to the stairs. Upon reaching the stairs, that scent from last night immediately hit me again. I knew last night wouldn’t be the last time I smelled that exquisite scent. It wasn’t as strong as the day before, but nonetheless, it was still there. I had to figure out where this scent was coming from. I followed it again, but instead of it growing stronger the further up the stairs I went, it actually grew stronger as I descended the staircase and headed towards the ballroom. The stronger the scent became, the more I was affected by it. It was an unforgettable smell - rose, pine needles, rain, and plumeria - and it sent an anxious jolt of energy through my entire body that made me giddy and aroused the more I smelled it. So, something this pack has that has the ability to drive my senses into overdrive was brought into the ballroom for the unmated wolves. Hmmmm...This was becoming more and more interesting as the night progressed.
As I walked around a hallway towards the ballroom, still following that delectable scent, I noticed my father and two other mated Alphas standing in the foyer greeting area talking. I quickly darted around another corner, hoping my father didn’t notice me. I was relieved when I didn’t hear anyone call after me and I continued heading towards the ballroom, chasing that smell.
Right outside the ballroom, there were people congregated in small groups talking amongst themselves. In one of the groups, I immediately made out two familiar faces - my beta and gamma. Alec was flirting with a red-headed she-wolf wearing a blue sequin dress that sparkled at her every movement, complimenting her eyes. It was definitely eye-catching, to say the least, but he seemed very involved in the conversation he was carrying on with her and she looked pretty into him.
“Ares! Over here man!” Alessandro saw me approach and waved me over to their group.
“Hey…” I smiled as I walked over.
“Ares, meet Jessica of the Goldfang Pack and this delightful creature next to me is Celeste of the Dreamwalker Pack!” Alec introduced me to the two women Alessandro and he were trying to get their game on with. I shake their hands politely greeting them.
“Alessandro tells me you are the future Alpha of the Freedom Ridge Pack…” The redhead standing next to him inquires.
“That is true…” I trail off yet again somewhat bored of the conversation already. I really needed to make a note to myself to tell Alec and Alessandro to get some other pick-up lines other than, ‘Hey pretty lady, I’m friends with the future alpha!’.
“Huh...That’s surprising.” She retorts.
“Why is that?” I am now genuinely curious. I felt kind of insulted.
“Because...your aura is a lot more powerful than that of an alpha, which is weird. I’ve never seen someone with as much power in their aura as you have. I would have thought you were the Alpha King if I didn’t know what Alpha King Harmon looked like.” She chuckles clearly not intending to insult me.
“Oh, is that so huh? How can you see how ‘powerful’ my aura is?” I laugh questioning her further.
“I’m half-wolf, half-witch. I read people’s auras. My mom taught me how.” Celeste, the redhead that has been grilling me states matter of factly with pride beaming from her. A mutt is what I call them, half-breeds and mixed-bred wolves. She wasn’t a very strong wolf because of her intermixed bloodline, but she was at least nice. I brushed her comment off as a compliment attempting to flirt or get in my good graces since she was hanging all over my beta.
“Makes sense now.” I nod still keeping my expression neutral.
“Well, that’s awesome!” The girl with raven black hair wearing a golden form-fitting ball gown standing next to Alessandro commented, sensing my growing boredom.
“So, have you met your mate yet?” Alec asks, sipping on what looked to be whiskey.
“No, you know I just got here Alec.” I scowl at him. “What about you all?”
“Oh, no! I’m still on the prowl for him...he is elusive. I am starting to think he isn’t here this year…” The girl with black hair, I assume to be Jessica sulks.
“I was trying to cheer her up about it when you walked up,” Alessandro explains.
“I thought I saw him...but my wolf said he wasn’t our mate, so I’m still on the hunt!” Celeste states in better spirits.
“You’d be the first to know if either of us met our mate, you know that Ares,” Alec explains confidently as he wraps his arm around Celeste’s waist.
“So what, you just thought you would cozy up with me in the meantime?” Celeste raises an eyebrow at Alec pushing back from him playfully.
“What? You don’t want to keep me company?” He frowns at her jokingly.
Celeste giggled again, batting her eyes back at Alec, “Well..maybe for a little while...but I have to keep my options open!”
“Of course you do!” He winks back at her. “But in the meantime, I sure am enjoying your exquisite company!”
“Oh god Alec...unpucker your lips from her ass...you’re embarrassing yourself!” Alessandro teases, chuckling.
I laugh at their conversation. “Well, I think I’m going to make a lap around to see what trouble I can get into.” I wink at Alec and Alessandro as I back away from their group.
“Alright man! Good luck! See you later! Mindlink one of us if you need an escape man!” Alec waves as I walk away nodding and waving back.
