9AlliesI open the trunk, retrieve the first shirt and pair of jeans I find, and shove them on. My mind is already down the hall, through the slim staircase, out onto the beach, and then— I pause. And then what? I wonder. My mind stalls. I haven’t the slightest clue where to start my search for Lucas. One foot in front of the other. My father’s favorite line of encouragement repeats in my brain until my heart rate steadies. I close my eyes and force myself to take a long, slow breath. I can’t save Lucas if I don’t know where Asher is keeping him. I can’t seal the veil if I don’t know where to find it. I grind my teeth, and fish through the pockets of Vanessa’s pants for Spera’s necklace. I fasten it around my neck and clutch the horseshoe charm in my palm. I’m in a house full of people
