“You were nice to me. Cute.” He tipped his head to one side, a wistful smile on his face. “Smart. Smarter than I am. I did like that about you, though sometimes you… I don’t know. I got the feeling you thought I was dumb.” I paused. “I’m sorry,” I said quietly. I always knew he wasn’t as ambitious as I was, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t smart. “I never meant to make you feel like that.” “I know,” Ben said, shrugging. “It was one thing in college. Education and learning, that’s supposed to be all you think about, right? But we’re not in school anymore. I don’t think about that kind of stuff. You do, that’s why you work at the learning center.” Worked, I thought, but I didn’t want to bring it up again. It felt like I was finally getting some answers, and I didn’t want to throw him off.
