Chapter 3: The Shadow Beyond the Trees

926 Words
Aria walked through the thick forest, each step a reminder of her aching legs and swollen feet. The sun barely filtered through the canopy above, casting the woods in a cold, green glow. Morning had come and gone, but she had no concept of time anymore. Hunger was beginning to creep back in, but worse than that was the silence. Kalen hadn’t returned. She kept glancing behind her, expecting to see those amber eyes again, but the trees offered no sign of him. It was foolish to hope he would stay. He had said what he came to say, then vanished like smoke. Still, part of her had clung to the idea that maybe, just maybe, someone was watching over her. She wasn’t used to being looked after. Her steps slowed when she reached a small clearing surrounded by mossy stones and tall birch trees. The place felt… different. The air was heavy. Still. Her wolf stirred again, more alert than before. Something about the clearing felt sacred, like it had been touched by old magic. She moved to the center, scanning her surroundings carefully. The wind shifted, bringing a strange scent to her nose. It wasn’t human. It wasn’t wolf either. It was… something else. Then the vision hit. She gasped and dropped to her knees. Her head spun. The clearing melted away, replaced by swirling shadows. A silver flame flickered in the darkness, and a shape stood within it. A wolf. Massive and glowing, its eyes burning gold. "Aria," a voice echoed in her mind, both ancient and female. Her heart pounded as she clutched the earth beneath her. Her vision blurred again, and the world snapped back into place. She was once again in the clearing, on her knees, breathless and shaken. “What was that?” she whispered aloud. Her wolf answered faintly from within her. Not in words, but in emotion. Recognition. Awe. The Moon had touched this place. She rose unsteadily and pressed her palm against a stone at the edge of the clearing. It was warm to the touch, pulsing softly, almost like a heartbeat. Then the silence was broken. Branches cracked behind her. Not the soft sound of squirrels or birds. Heavy, deliberate footsteps. She spun around. A group of wolves emerged from the trees, shifting quickly into human form as they stepped into the clearing. Five of them. All male. All strangers. Their eyes weren’t friendly. The tallest stepped forward, his smirk crooked and cold. “Well, well. What do we have here?” She backed away slowly, eyes darting for an escape route. The man sniffed the air and grinned wider. “Rogue. And… pregnant?” His tone dripped with amusement. Her heart thundered in her chest. “You’re trespassing,” he added. “I didn’t know this land was claimed,” she replied, voice steady but her hands trembling. “Everything around here belongs to the Stoneclaw Pack,” he said. “And rogues don’t last long in our woods.” She clenched her jaw. “I don’t want trouble.” “Too late,” he replied. One of the others took a step closer. “Alpha Ryker will want to see her.” “Let me go,” Aria said firmly. The leader laughed. “You’re in no position to make demands.” Her wolf stirred, fighting to rise, but still too weak to shift. Aria's fingers curled into fists. She was outnumbered and unarmed, but she wouldn’t go without a fight. Suddenly, something fast moved through the trees. A blur. A force. Before the rogue closest to her could react, he was yanked backward and thrown against a tree with a sickening crack. The others turned, stunned. Kalen stepped from the shadows, his face unreadable, his eyes cold. “Leave,” he said flatly. The leader sneered. “And who are you?” Kalen didn’t answer. He moved like lightning, striking the nearest man with a blow that sent him crashing into the stones. The others tried to surround him, but Aria had never seen anyone move the way Kalen did. Controlled. Lethal. Efficient. Within moments, three were down. The fourth limped into the woods, disappearing into the trees. The leader spat blood and glared at him. “She’s not worth it.” “She’s not yours to touch,” Kalen replied. The last man growled and shifted, fur tearing through his skin. A dark grey wolf lunged forward. Kalen didn’t shift, but he ducked and swept the wolf’s legs, slamming him into the ground. Then silence. The clearing returned to stillness, broken only by Kalen’s labored breathing. Aria stared at him, shaken. “You came back.” “I never left.” “You followed me?” “You’re not safe alone.” She opened her mouth, but no words came. Kalen stepped closer, his eyes serious. “You need to come with me.” She hesitated. Trust was not something she gave easily. Not anymore. But the clearing, the vision, the men who tried to take her. It was all too much. “Where are we going?” she asked. “Somewhere they can’t find you.” “And after that?” He looked her directly in the eye. “Then we find out why the Moon is watching you.” Her breath caught. The sacred flame. The golden wolf. The name called in the vision. Kalen offered his hand. For a moment, she just stared at it. Then, slowly, she reached out and took it. And everything began to change.
