Chapter Two: An Unexpected Encounter

767 Words
"I want you to meet my older brother, Adrian," Nathan said with a proud smile. My eyes slowly lifted toward the man standing before us. For a moment, the laughter of our guests, the soft music drifting through the reception hall, and every conversation around me seemed to fade into the background. He was the same man who had walked into the church earlier, effortlessly drawing everyone's attention without saying a single word. Now that he stood only a few feet away, I could see him more clearly. Adrian was tall, with sharp features and a calm expression that made him seem distant. Yet when he smiled, deep dimples softened his face, and the slight gap between his teeth made his smile feel unexpectedly genuine. "Congratulations, brother," Adrian said, his deep voice calm and steady. His gaze briefly met mine. It lasted only a second. Still... For reasons I couldn't explain, my heart skipped ever so slightly. I quickly looked away. What was wrong with me? He was simply Nathan's older brother. A man I had only just met. I tightened my grip on my bouquet. Nathan was my husband now. Today was about the vows we had exchanged, the future we had promised each other, and the beginning of our new life together. I refused to let a meaningless moment distract me from the happiness I had waited so long for. I offered Adrian a polite smile. "Thank you." He returned a small nod before turning back to Nathan, and the brief encounter ended as naturally as it had begun. Nathan gently took my hand, and together we walked through the reception hall, greeting relatives and accepting endless congratulations. Every smile reminded me how special this day was. Until suddenly... A waitress hurried past us carrying a tray of drinks. Her foot slipped. The tray tilted. Cold juice splashed across the front of my wedding gown. My heart sank. For a second, all I could do was stare at the stain spreading across the white fabric I had spent months choosing. It felt as though a tiny piece of my perfect day had been ruined. Then I looked at the waitress. She was trembling. "I'm... I'm so sorry, madam." The fear in her eyes washed away my disappointment. "It's okay," I said gently. "It was an accident." She apologized again before hurrying away. Nathan frowned with concern. "Are you alright?" I smiled reassuringly. "I'm fine. I just need to clean the dress before the stain sets." "I'll come with you." I shook my head. "No. Stay with our guests. I'll be back soon." After hesitating for a moment, he nodded. "Alright. Don't take too long." I made my way toward the ladies' restroom. Thankfully, after carefully dabbing the fabric with water, the stain gradually faded. Relief flooded through me. At least my dress wasn't ruined. I reached behind my back to pull up the zipper, but it refused to move. I tried again. Nothing. Another attempt. Still nothing. A frustrated sigh escaped my lips. Why now? I stretched my arm as far as I could, silently wishing I had asked someone to help before leaving the reception. Footsteps echoed outside. I barely paid them any attention. Guests were constantly walking through the hallway. Then... A movement reflected in the mirror caught my eye. My breath caught. Someone was standing near the doorway. I spun around. My eyes widened. Adrian. "What are you doing here?" I asked, startled. "I was walking past," he replied calmly. "I noticed you seemed to be struggling." Only then did I realize the restroom door hadn't closed completely behind me. Heat rushed to my cheeks. Before I could say anything else, Adrian immediately turned his face away, giving me as much privacy as he could. "Would you like me to help?" His respectful tone eased some of my embarrassment. After a brief hesitation, I nodded. "Please." Without another word, he stepped forward and carefully pulled the zipper into place. His movements were quick and respectful. The moment he finished, he stepped back. "There." I let out a relieved breath. "Thank you." "You're welcome." Silence settled between us. It should have felt ordinary. He had only helped me with a stubborn zipper. Nothing more. Yet for some reason, I found myself strangely aware of his presence. Why? I didn't want to know. Giving him one last polite smile, I turned and walked back toward the reception hall. I had no idea that the few minutes we had just shared would become the beginning of a storm that would change all of our lives.
