β˜…π•Ίπ–‘π–Žπ–›π–Žπ–† Ronan's command echoed in the sudden silence of the library, the force of it pressing down on me long after his retreating footsteps had faded. "Stay here. Do not leave the palace. Do not leave the main grounds. Understood?" The words weren't a request; they were an order, absolute and chilling. My wolf, Rex, had bristled at the raw Alpha authority, a flash of pure defiance that had warred with an instinct to obey. Then, a sharp, searing pain shot through my chest, as if my own will was being forcibly suppressed. The defiance vanished, replaced by a strange, unsettling compliance that felt alien and wrong. I sank onto the polished library floor, my legs too weak to hold me. My mind raced, trying to process the encounter. He had pinned me, looked at me not as a sister, but as something else entirely. His touch, his whisper, "Your wolf knows, Liv. Your body knows." What did he mean? What did my wolf know? And the way he'd pulled away, his eyes suddenly hard, filled with an urgency that had nothing to do with me. The library felt suffocating. The scent of old parchment, usually comforting, now seemed to press in on me, stale and heavy. I scrambled to my feet, desperate for air, for space, for anything that didn't feel steeped in Ronan's overwhelming presence. The faint scent of smoke from my dream returned, too, a phantom warning. I moved through the palace like a ghost, avoiding everyone. My mind was a whirl of confusion and growing fear. That necklace, the one with the strange silver moon and twisted root symbol, burned against my skin, even through the fabric of my dress. It was under my pillow, a silent, unsettling secret. As I rounded a corner in the main hallway, I ran directly into my mother, Luna Freya. Her silver eyes, usually so warm and gentle, were strangely calm, almost vacant, as the distant sounds of chaos began to rise. She didn't flinch. She simply looked at me, a faint, forced smile on her lips. "Olivia, dear," she said, her voice a soothing balm that felt chillingly out of place. "The servants are being taken to the North Wing for safety. Follow me. That is where we'll be safe." She took my hand, her grip firm, and began to pull me in that direction. But the North Wing was a dead-end, a less-guarded area of the palace. Something about her calm, and her deliberate choice of path, sent a new shiver of fear down my spine. It was just after nightfall when the true chaos erupted. A piercing, terrified scream tore through the night, followed by the frantic howls of warriors and the clanging of weapons. This wasn't a distant skirmish; this was here. My blood ran cold. The sounds of battle grew closer, echoing from the palace's outer courtyards. Panic seized the palace. Maids shrieked, guards barked orders, and the entire structure vibrated with the sudden, brutal invasion. I pulled my hand from my mother's, and she gave me a look of cold, calculating impatience. I darted towards a window, my heart hammering. Outside, a scene of horrifying violence unfolded. Dark, snarling forms, larger and more brutal than any rogue wolves I’d ever heard of, swarmed the courtyard, clashing with our warriors. Their eyes glowed with a malevolent green light, and their fur was almost black, like shadows given form. The air filled with the scent of blood and something else, something cold and sharp, like ancient hatred. As I stared at their glowing eyes, a pulse of heat flared from my own hands, a flash of golden light that was gone in an instant. My gaze frantically searched for Ronan. He was there, a whirlwind of power, shifting seamlessly between his human and wolf form, tearing through the invaders with brutal efficiency. But there were too many of them. Suddenly, a massive, black-furred wolf, twice the size of our own warriors, broke through the melee. It wasn't attacking the guards; its glowing green eyes were fixed on the palace itself, moving with terrifying speed directly towards my wing. My blood turned to ice. It knew where I was. Before I could react, the heavy oak doors of the palace's main hall burst inward with a sickening c***k. Two more of the monstrous black wolves, accompanied by cloaked figures wielding strange, glowing blades, surged inside. They were too fast. They bypassed the fighting, their focus singular, their eyes fixed on the path leading to the residential wing. My senses screamed. Danger. Death. And then, a sickening realization. They weren't after the Alpha. They were after me. A primal roar tore from my throat, a sound I didn't recognize as my own. It wasn't just a sound; it was an uncontrolled burst of elemental power, a shockwave that slammed into the walls of the palace and sent a shiver of pure energy through the entire structure. I didn't know how, I didn't know why, but I knew. They were here for me.
