The Confrontation Alexander took hold of my hand once more and urged, "Stay close to me." "I don't want you to get lost in this confusion." Squeezing his hand, I replied, "Right." In the middle of the commotion, I felt secure in the warmth of his embrace. I noticed Victor conversing with a group of visitors across the room as we made our way through the throng. There was a smug look on his face, and I got angry. I pointed to him and said, "There he is." "What is he doing?" With a tense voice, Alexander remarked, "Probably stirring up trouble." "We must exercise caution." "Mindful? I continued, my resolve growing, "I want to confront him. "Not quite," cautioned Alexander. "First, we need to get more information." Details? Similar to what? Exasperated, I asked. "He is the issue!" He answered, "I know, but we need to be strategic." "It might backfire if we confront him right now." "All right," I replied, crossing my arms. "But I'd like to take action." "Mia, trust me. His expression softened as he continued, "We'll work this out together. A loud voice broke through the din just then. “Gentlemen and ladies! Would you kindly give me your attention? It was Victor, positioned atop an improvised platform. Everyone in the room turned to stare at him, and silence descended. Alexander clinched his jaw and whispered, "Here we go." Victor said with a smug smirk, "I have some important news to share." "It appears that there is a small intruder among us." "What is he discussing?" Alexander heard me whisper. "Please wait," he said, narrowing his gaze. Victor pointed right at me and said, "Some of you may know her as the ambitious reporter, Mia Sullivan." "She's been investigating my family's business and attempting to bring us to light." "What?" I felt the heat rising in my cheeks and gasped. "He's telling lies!" "Misleading? Hardly," Victor uttered in a sarcastic tone. "She has been courting my brother with her charm, all for the sake of a narrative." "Victory, stop it!" With a yell, Alexander moved forward. "You're distorting the facts!" "Splitting? "I'm just expressing the facts," Victor shot back, his smile growing. "Mia is here to take advantage of our family for personal benefit." "Is that how you view me?" Feeling a mixture of betrayal and rage, I yelled. "I'm not here to hurt people; I'm here to find the truth!" "Reality? What is the truth? Victor sneered. "Mia, you are only a pawn in this game. A pawn with the mentality of a queen. "Enough!" Alexander bellowed his tone heavy. Victor, you will not get away with this. Victor retorted, "Oh, but I already have," his hateful eyes glistening. "You sealed your fate the moment you allowed her into your life." I whispered, "Alexander, don't listen to him," as my heart began to race. "My purpose is not to deceive you," "Are you certain of that?" Victor winked at us, his eyes darting back and forth. "You only work as a reporter. Everything is possible for a story. "Cease talking!" I cried out as tears began to well up in my eyes. "You're ignorant of who I am!" "Enough!" Alexander moved to the side of us, his face intense. "Victory, I won't allow you to manipulate her." "Twist? With a waning smile, Victor added, "I'm just telling the truth." "The fact is, Mia poses a threat to all that you have accomplished." "Everything I've constructed, Alexander retaliated sharply. "You mean everything that you've made an effort to ruin!" With a chilly, bitter laugh, Victor laughed. Do you believe you can keep her safe? Alex, you're too frail. You have been for all time. "You're not allowed to talk about him in that way!" I stepped forward and shouted. "He is more powerful than you will ever be!" "Is that accurate?" With narrowed eyes, Victor spoke. "Then when the truth is revealed, let's see how strong he really is." "What is the truth?" Sensing the tension in the air, I made my demand. "What do you conceal?" "Let me just say, sometimes the truth can be dangerous," Victor retorted in a hushed, threatening tone. "Moreover, Mia, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you." "Leave her alone!" Alexander tightened his hands and snarled. Or what? Will you keep her safe? Victor's laughter reverberated across the space. "Brother, it's too late. The game has already started. The lights abruptly flickered once more, bringing the room to complete darkness. The air filled with gasps, and I felt Alexander's hand next to mine. His voice was urgent as he murmured, "Stay close." "What's going on?" Panic rising in my chest, I asked. "Please hold on," he replied, offering a comforting grip. I noticed Victor standing at the fringe of the crowd with a smug smirk on his face as the lights flickered back on. He mocked, "Looks like the party is just getting started." "Explain what you mean." With a knot in my stomach, I asked. "Let me just say, I have some surprises in store," Victor shot back, his icy gaze shining brightly. "And right in the middle of it is you, Mia." "Victor, you're not well." With a roar, Alexander moved forward once more. "This will not get away with you!" Victor said, his voice brimming with joy, "Oh, I already have." "You'll discover." "Alexander, we really must leave this place," I murmured, my heart pounding. "This is becoming too much." "Not yet," he shot back, his face angry. "We have to face him." "Assail him? Are you deranged? I let out a cry. "Be careful around him!" Alexander answered in a firm voice, "I know." "But I'm not going to let him win." Feeling the gravity of the issue, I pushed, "Then let's come up with a plan." "He cannot continue to manipulate us." "I agree," he murmured, fixing his gaze on mine. "But we must exercise caution." "Mindful? I stated, my resolve growing, "I'm done being cautious. "I want to defeat him." "All right," Alexander replied, his tone tinged with appreciation. "But we work together on this." "Together," I said as my heart raced.
