Chapter two

Entering the Shadows As the lights flickered back on, Alexander muttered, "Stay close." He tightened his grip on my hand. There was mayhem going on in the ballroom, but all I could think about was him. "We must leave this place." "Why? What is happening? With a beating heart, I asked. There was a noticeable strain in the air. With his eyes sweeping the gathering, he answered, "Victor is up to something." "And I don't want you to get caught up in it." "Stuck in the midst? I fired back, saying, 'I'm already in the center. "I refuse to travel without answers." "Results?" With a sinister laugh, he laughed. "Do you believe you can deal with the truth?" I said steadily, "I can handle a lot more than you think." "Alexander, you've not been through a difficult time alone." He stopped and gave me a surprised, appreciative look. Do you truly wish to know? "More than everything," I said, sensing the intensity of his stare. Tell me what's happening. With a hushed voice, he answered, "Fine." "But you need to swear to me that you'll use caution." With my heart racing with eagerness, I responded, "Promise." His jaw tightened, "Victor wants to take everything from me," he said. He has been scheming for years to try to ruin my company. He is merciless and will not give up until he achieves his goals. "Why? What is his ultimate goal? Attempting to put everything together, I asked. Alexander uttered the words, "He wants control of the family legacy," with a frustrated tone. "He believes he is more deserving of it than I am." I shook my head and remarked, "Family drama." "It has a soap opera-like sound." " Not only drama, Miss Mia. It's risky," he retorted, looking serious. “And I can’t let him get to you now that you’re involved.” "Me? I objected, saying I'm only a reporter. "I pose no threat." "Not yet," he stated, fixing his gaze on mine. "But he will view you as a target if he discovers you are meddling in my life." I felt a wave of resolve and insisted, "I can handle myself." "Can you?" he asked, taking a step toward her. "You're not aware of his potential." "Then allow me to assist," I pleaded, sensing our bond deepening. "Our combined strength can defeat him." He paused, looking into my eyes. "Do you truly want to become entangled in this mess?" "Remember that I'm already involved?" With a beating heart, I said. "I refuse to give up now." "All right," he murmured, giving in at last. "But you have to assure me that you'll be safe." "I swear," I murmured, experiencing an adrenaline surge. Tension was in the air as we made our way back into the ballroom. There were whispers among the guests, some seeming frightened, some just perplexed. Clara was standing close to the door, her worried eyes wide. She cried out, running over. "Mia!" "What took place? Are you alright? Reassuring her, I said, "I'm fine." "But we must speak." "Speak? Regarding what? Glancing at Alexander, Clara questioned. "Regarding Victor," I murmured, dropping my tone. "We must find a way to deal with him because he poses a threat." Victor? The sibling? Clara's gaze expanded. "Explain what you mean." Feeling the weight of the situation, I responded, "Alexander just told me everything." "He can't get away with this," we said. "Are you certain you want to participate?" With a look of anxiety, Clara enquired. "This might get hazardous." "I am aware," I uttered steadily. But now I'm unable to leave. Not knowing what's on the line. "All right," Clara murmured, inhaling deeply. "But swear to me that you'll use caution." I exclaimed, "I promise," with a sudden vigor of resolve. Glancing around the crowd, Alexander proposed, "Let's find a quieter place to talk." "We must devise a strategy." "Very good idea," I replied, trailing him through the throng. With the sound of the gala disappearing behind us, we crept into a little side chamber. I could sense the tension and the weight of what was going to happen. "All right, what's the plan?" Crossing my arms, I questioned. Alexander said, "We need to gather information on Victor." "We need to know what he's up to; he's been moving behind the scenes." "Yes. However, how can we go about doing that?” With a rushing mind, I asked. He said, "I have some contacts who might be able to help." But you must remain near me. Victor will view you as a target if he learns that you are involved. I said, "Understood," realizing how serious the issue was. How is your business doing? Is it secure? "For the time being," he continued, his face growing serious. "But everything I've built could fall apart if Victor gets his way." "Then we must not allow that to occur," I murmured, my resolve pulsating through me. "We must move quickly." Alexander murmured, fixing his gaze on mine, "Agreed." "But you have to assure me that you'll exercise caution." "I swear," I murmured, experiencing an adrenaline surge. With a smug expression on his face, Victor entered as the door suddenly flung open. "Okay, okay, okay. With a gleam in his eyes, he asked mockingly, "What do we have here?" Alexander murmured in a quiet, strained voice, "Victor." "What is it that you want?" Victor said, looking at me, "Just checking in on my dear brother and his new friend." "You have to be Mia. The aspirational journalist.” "Enthusiastic enough to expose your plots," I shot back, not willing to concede. "Schemes? Victor laughed and leaned against the wall, saying, "How dramatic." "But rest assured, my only concern is for my family." "Relatives?" Alexander sneered. "You have no regard for your family. All that matters to you is power. "Power is the foundation of this world, brother," Victor remarked in a contemptuous manner. You're too frail to notice it, too. With a protective stride in front of me, Alexander admonished Victor to keep away from her. “Or what? Will you keep her safe?” Victor's laughter reverberated throughout the little space. Alexander, it's too late for you. The game has already started. "Which game?" I asked, a wave of anxiety rising in me. "The veracity can pose a threat," declared Victor, his grin growing. "Moreover, Mia, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you." Alexander hissed, his voice low and menacing, "Get out." With a mischievous gleam in his eyes, Victor remarked, "Let's see how this plays out." "It seems like a really interesting show," With that, he turned and walked away, leaving a thick trail of stillness behind him. "What was the matter with that?" With my heart racing, I turned to Alexander and asked. "There's nothing to be concerned about," he said, his face tense. "I have nothing to be concerned about? I was just threatened by your brother! I cried out, my frustration building. Alexander claimed, "Victor is just trying to get under my skin," but his jaw was obviously tense. " Beneath your skin? Alexander, he poses a danger!” I said, “I need to know what's going on.”
