Chapter 9: Calling Off the Engagement
Maria woke up feeling exhausted and groggy as she went to work. She was troubled by the thought of having been intimate with a stranger and the need to find the engagement ring to return to Aaron to call off the engagement. She couldn’t shake the image of that night, and the way her own heart felt so empty. What had she done? What had he done? The regret gnawed at her, a constant reminder of how things had gone so wrong.
But when she arrived at work, she was even further stressed because Aaron was waiting to meet her at the building entrance. She quickly pulled him into the elevator to talk in the less crowded parking lot behind the building. Her head felt heavy, but she had to deal with this now, before it consumed her even more.
