Ch 5 The rift

Rahul and Evelyn stood at the edge of the overgrown park, the strange heaviness in the air intensifying with each step they took. The ground beneath their feet felt unstable, as though the very earth was rippling with the same distortions they had witnessed in the city. Around them, the sky had taken on an even deeper, more ominous green hue, with cracks of light flashing across the horizon like the remnants of a storm trapped in the atmosphere. "This is it," Evelyn murmured, her voice tight with apprehension. She adjusted her wrist device again, but its flickering had grown more erratic, now barely functioning in the proximity of the rift. "We’re getting close to the source." Rahul swallowed hard, his nerves jangling. He had imagined what the crash site might look like, but now that they were here, the reality of it weighed heavily on him. The park opened into a wide clearing, and at the far end, he could see it—a massive crater, still smoldering with the residual heat of the impact. The ground around the crater was scorched, blackened as if the very grass had burned away on contact. Above it, hovering just above the center, was the rift itself. It wasn’t what Rahul had expected. He had imagined the rift would look like a portal, a swirling vortex like the one that had opened in the city. But this was different. It was jagged, a gash in the sky, shimmering with fragments of broken light and energy. It pulsed in irregular intervals, sending waves of distortion through the air around it. The ground near the rift appeared warped, with trees and rocks bending at unnatural angles, their forms twisted by the proximity to the tear in reality. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The weight of the scene before them seemed to press down, like the gravity of the situation was pulling at their very souls. The rift wasn’t just a hole in the sky—it was a wound, an open gash in the fabric of the world itself. Evelyn knelt beside the crater, pulling out the stabilizer device from her bag. "This is going to be tricky," she muttered, more to herself than to Rahul. "The energy levels here are off the charts. If we’re going to fix this, I need to reconfigure the stabilizer to compensate for the sheer size of the rift. It’s much larger than I anticipated." Rahul hovered nearby, his heart thudding in his chest. "What can I do to help?" Evelyn glanced up at him, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Stay close and keep an eye out. The rift’s energy is attracting all sorts of attention. We’re not the only ones who’ve come looking for answers—or a way to escape." Rahul’s eyes darted around the clearing, his senses on high alert. The rift was indeed drawing attention. As they had approached, he’d caught glimpses of movement in the surrounding trees—shadows flitting between the branches, the faint sound of distant footsteps. Whether it was more dinosaurs or something else, he couldn’t be sure, but the feeling of being watched had clung to him since they’d entered the park. Evelyn began working on the stabilizer, her hands moving quickly as she adjusted wires and reconfigured settings. She muttered under her breath, calculating energy output, recalibrating the device to match the intensity of the rift. The small device in her hands hummed with power, glowing faintly as it synchronized with the rift’s energy. Rahul took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was closing in on them. The park was too quiet, too still. The only sound was the low, throbbing hum of the rift, pulsing like a heartbeat. But there was something else—faint, almost imperceptible at first. A low growl, the rustle of leaves, the crunch of something heavy moving through the underbrush. "Evelyn," Rahul whispered, his voice barely audible. "Something’s coming." She didn’t look up, her focus still on the stabilizer, but her shoulders tensed. "Keep your eyes open," she said quietly. "We don’t have much time. I just need a few more minutes." Rahul nodded, his hand instinctively moving to the small, makeshift weapon he’d picked up earlier—a broken metal rod he’d found in one of the abandoned buildings. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing. His grip tightened on the rod as the sounds grew louder, closer. The growl came again, deeper this time, reverberating through the trees. Then, with a sudden crash, something massive burst from the foliage. Rahul’s heart stopped as he saw it—a **Velociraptor**, its sleek, scaled body darting toward them with terrifying speed. Its eyes locked onto Rahul, and for a moment, all he could do was stare, frozen in place. "Evelyn!" he shouted, his voice breaking the silence. "We’ve got company!" Evelyn looked up, her eyes widening as she saw the raptor charging toward them. She cursed under her breath, scrambling to finish her adjustments on the stabilizer. "I’m almost done! Just keep it busy!" "Keep it busy?" Rahul echoed, panic flooding his veins. "How am I supposed to do that?" But there was no time to argue. The raptor was closing the distance fast, its claws gleaming in the dim light as it leaped toward him. Rahul barely had time to react, raising the metal rod in a desperate attempt to defend himself. The raptor slammed into him, its weight knocking him off balance. He fell backward, hitting the ground hard as the raptor’s jaws snapped inches from his face. With a surge of adrenaline, Rahul swung the rod, striking the creature across its snout. The raptor let out a furious screech, momentarily dazed by the blow. Rahul scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding in his chest. He had no idea how he was going to survive this. The raptor was faster, stronger, and far more deadly than anything he’d ever faced. But he couldn’t give up. Not now. Not when they were so close to fixing the rift. The raptor shook its head, recovering from the blow, and snarled, baring its sharp teeth. It lunged at Rahul again, its claws swiping at him with terrifying precision. Rahul dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack, and swung the rod again, this time aiming for its legs. The metal connected with a sickening thud, and the raptor let out another screech, stumbling as it tried to regain its balance. Rahul didn’t hesitate. He struck again, putting all his strength into the blow, driving the raptor back. "Evelyn, hurry!" he shouted, his voice strained with the effort of keeping the raptor at bay. "I’m almost there!" she called back, her hands moving faster than ever as she made the final adjustments to the stabilizer. The device in her hands pulsed with energy, glowing brighter as it synchronized with the rift. The raptor, now enraged, charged at Rahul with renewed fury. It leaped into the air, its claws outstretched, ready to tear into him. Rahul braced himself, knowing he wouldn’t be able to dodge in time. But before the raptor could reach him, a loud, deafening roar filled the air. The ground shook beneath them, and both Rahul and the raptor froze, turning toward the source of the sound. Emerging from the trees was an even larger predator—a **Tyrannosaurus Rex**, its massive form towering over the landscape. The raptor let out a terrified screech and bolted, disappearing into the underbrush as the T-Rex approached, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground with each step. Rahul’s breath caught in his throat as the T-Rex’s gaze fixed on him. It was impossible to comprehend the sheer size of the creature, its massive jaws capable of crushing him in a single bite. He backed away slowly, his mind racing for any possible escape. "Evelyn!" he called, his voice trembling. "We’ve got a bigger problem!" Evelyn glanced up, her eyes widening as she saw the T-Rex bearing down on them. "I’ve got it!" she shouted, holding up the stabilizer. "But we need to activate it at the rift’s center. Now!" Rahul didn’t need to be told twice. He sprinted toward the rift, the ground shaking beneath him as the T-Rex closed in. Evelyn followed, clutching the stabilizer tightly in her hands. The T-Rex let out another thunderous roar, but it seemed hesitant to approach the rift, as if sensing the unstable energy emanating from it. For a moment, it stood at the edge of the clearing, watching them with a mixture of curiosity and caution. Rahul and Evelyn reached the crater, standing directly beneath the rift. The energy crackled around them, distorting the air with its intensity. "Now!" Evelyn shouted, thrusting the stabilizer toward the rift. The device hummed with power, glowing brighter as it began to synchronize with the rift’s energy. The air around them pulsed, the distortions growing more intense as the stabilizer worked to seal the tear in reality. For a moment, nothing happened. The rift continued to shimmer, pulsing with broken light. But then, slowly, the jagged edges began to close, the energy drawing inward as the rift began to seal itself. Rahul held his breath, watching in awe as the impossible began to happen. The rift
