CHAPTER ELEVEN: THE QUEEN’S POSSESSION

2095 Words
⸻ The cafeteria at Elite Academy was loud in that familiar way only break time could bring. Trays clattered. Laughter bounced off marble walls. Music played faintly from someone’s speaker, competing with gossip, status, and egos. Aria sat at the center table — as always. Lila lounged beside her, legs crossed, phone in hand. Sienna stirred her iced drink lazily, eyes scanning the room. Then Kayden, Sam, and Luca approached. Kayden dropped into the seat opposite Aria like he owned the space — confident, calm, already dressed like the future everyone expected of him. Sam leaned back on the chair beside him, chewing gum. Luca gave a lazy nod, his eyes already observing everything. “Break time royalty,” Sam said with a grin. “Mind if we sit?” Aria smirked. “As if you’d wait for permission.” They laughed — the kind of laughter that turned heads. That was when Damian passed. Fast. Head down. Bag clutched to his chest. He moved like someone trying not to be seen — like prey crossing a dangerous path. Aria noticed immediately. She scoffed. “Did you see that?” she said, lips curling. “The way he walks like we’re going to arrest him.” Lila burst out laughing. “Damian? Please. That boy panics just by hearing your voice.” Sienna shook her head, amused. “He really thought he stood a chance.” Aria leaned back, folding her arms. “I played him so easily it almost bored me.” Kayden raised a brow. “Played him how?” Aria smiled — slow, satisfied. “I told him if he helped me get Thiago as my project partner, I’d help him get Sienna.” Sienna nearly choked on her drink. “Wait— what?” “He didn’t even hesitate,” Aria continued. “Agreed immediately. Desperation is loud.” Lila clapped softly. “That’s actually evil.” “And smart,” Aria added. Sam laughed. “So he really believed he’d end up with Sienna?” Sienna rolled her eyes. “Please. I don’t even sit in the same row as him.” They all laughed again. But Kayden didn’t. He watched Aria closely now. “Since when do you care so much about who your project partner is?” he asked calmly. “The Aria I know doesn’t even pretend to like academics.” Aria’s smile faltered — just for a second. “People change,” she said. Kayden leaned in slightly. “That doesn’t suit you. And you know it.” Aria glanced at Lila and Sienna. “Oh? What do you think I’m doing?” Sam answered first. “You’re trying to play the new boy.” Luca nodded. “Yeah. And I don’t think it’s going to work.” Kayden added, cool but firm, “You should stick with a guy like me.” The table went quiet. Aria turned slowly toward him. “Excuse me?” Kayden met her gaze without blinking. “You don’t lose. And you don’t chase boys who don’t bend, so do I, we’re both powerful people.” Sam shifted awkwardly. Luca looked away. The tension thickened. Aria laughed suddenly — sharp, dismissive. “Relax. Don’t flatter yourself.” Kayden smiled — but there was something possessive beneath it. “Whether you like it or not,” he said quietly, “you’re not ending up with someone like Thiago.” Aria’s eyes darkened. “We’ll see.” The bell rang. And somewhere across the school library, Thiago sat alone, unaware that he had just become the center of a silent war. ⸻ The library was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that felt heavy instead of peaceful. Rows of books stood tall like guards, and the afternoon sun filtered in through the high glass windows, casting long shadows across the wooden tables. Thiago sat alone. Headset on. Book open. Completely unbothered. He leaned back slightly in his chair, one leg stretched out, eyes scanning the page without emotion. He looked like someone who had shut the world out long ago—and meant to keep it that way. Damian walked in. The moment he stepped inside, he felt it again—that familiar tightness in his chest. Whispers from earlier still echoed in his head. The stares. The laughter. The way people always seemed to look at him like he was weak. He spotted Thiago immediately. Damian hesitated… then walked over. “Man, we need to talk.” No response. Thiago didn’t even glance up. Instead, he calmly lifted his hand and slid his headset fully over his ears, increasing the volume just enough to make a point. Damian swallowed hard. “I know you’re mad,” he said quickly, lowering his voice. “I know you are”. voice low, guilty. “I know I messed up.” Still nothing. Thiago turned a page. Damian ran a hand through his hair, guilt flooding his face. “I know I begged you for that spot. I know you didn’t even want a partner. And after you finally agreed…” his voice cracked slightly, “…I gave it to Aria.” That did it. Thiago paused—but only for half a second. He slowly removed one side of the headset, not looking at Damian, not even reacting the way Damian expected. “Explain,” Damian rushed on. “Please. Just hear me out.” Thiago didn’t say a word. Damian leaned closer, desperation creeping into his tone. “You know how she is. You know how Aria manipulates people. She came to me, Thiago. She cornered me. Told me if I didn’t give her the spot, she’d ruin what little peace I have left in that school.” He laughed bitterly. “As if my life isn’t already a mess.” Still, Thiago didn’t care. Not outwardly. Damian continued, voice shaking now. “She said she’d make my life hell. And you know she can do it. Everyone listens to her. Everyone’s scared of her. I didn’t have a choice.” That did it. Thiago’s fingers paused for half a second. Not anger. Not shock. Just… acknowledgment. Slowly, he lifted the headset just enough for it to hang around his neck. He didn’t look at Damian. “You done?” he asked flatly. Damian rushed forward. “No. Please. Just—listen. You know how Aria is. You know how they treat me. My life here is already hell.” Thiago shut the book—softly, deliberately. Damian took that as permission and spilled everything. “How she cornered me.” “How she smiled while threatening him.” “How she told him to give her his number, to drop the project with Thiago, or she’d ruin whatever little peace he had left.” “How refusing wasn’t an option. “I didn’t have a choice,” Damian whispered. “I swear.” Silence. Thiago stood. Slipped the book into his bag. Put the headset back on. Damian stepped into his path. “You believe me, right? You know the kind of person she is.” Thiago finally looked at him. Cold eyes. Empty. Detached. “And you think I care?” Damian froze. “Either you,” Thiago continued calmly, “or that spoiled brat Aria—I don’t give a damn.” He adjusted his bag on his shoulder. “Do whatever you want.” Damian’s face fell. “So… do you forgive me?” Thiago didn’t answer. He simply walked past him. No glance back. No reassurance. No forgiveness. Just silence. Damian’s stood there alone between the shelves, realizing something too late— Thiago wasn’t angry. And that was worse. ⸻ The classroom was unusually quiet. Not the peaceful kind of quiet—but the tense, almost watchful kind. A few students were scattered around, heads bent over phones, fingers scrolling endlessly. No teachers. No supervision. Just murmurs, soft laughter, and the hum of the ceiling fan slicing through the air. Damian stood near one of the desks, shoulders tight, backpack hanging loosely from one arm. Maya stood in front of him. Not alone. Two girls flanked her, arms crossed, expressions sharp with entitlement. “You’re joking, right?” Maya snapped, her voice slicing through the room. “My project is still not submitted.” Damian inhaled slowly. “I told you I need more time.” Maya laughed, a short, mocking sound. “More time? Do you know how many days it’s been?” “I’m handling a lot of projects,” Damian said, voice controlled. “Yours isn’t the only one.” That was it. Maya’s eyes widened. “Did you just talk back to me?” One of her friends scoffed. “Wow. He has guts now.” Another leaned in. “Or maybe he’s forgotten his place.” Damian tightened his jaw. “That’s not what I meant.” Maya stepped closer. “So what did you mean, huh?” Before Damian could answer, a calm voice cut through the tension. “That’s enough.” Sienna stood by the doorway. Lila was beside her. Their presence alone shifted the air in the room. Maya turned. “And who asked you?” Sienna’s gaze was steady. Unshaken. “What gives you the right to gang up on him?” Maya laughed again. “Isn’t he the school bully? Everyone bullies him. It’s practically tradition.” “That’s where you’re wrong,” Sienna replied coolly. Footsteps echoed. Aria walked in. The room changed instantly. Phones lowered. Whispers stopped. Spines straightened. Aria stopped a few steps from Maya, eyes unreadable, posture effortless—like she owned the space without trying. “I give the authority,” Aria said calmly. “No one touches anyone in this school without my permission.” Maya blinked. “Aria… it’s not that deep. People always pick on Damian. We laugh about it.” Aria tilted her head slightly. “And I said stop.” Sienna spoke again, quieter now, but sharper. “Because I said so.” Maya turned to Sienna with a slow, condescending look. “Look at you. Who do you think you are giving rules? You’re not even Aria. Just her backup.” The room went still. Sienna didn’t raise her voice. “Say that again.” Maya scoffed. “Or what?” Sienna stepped forward. “And I’ll snap whatever confidence you think you have.” Lila quickly reached out, gripping Sienna’s arm. “Not worth it.” Aria’s eyes never left Maya. “Who gave you permission,” Aria said softly, “to speak to my friend like that?” Maya swallowed. “I—Aria, I’m sorry—” “Shut your mouth,” Aria cut in coldly, stepping closer. “Before I shut it for you.” Maya froze. “If you ever,” Aria continued, voice low and dangerous, “talk back to Sienna or any member of my crew again, I won’t be this polite.” Maya’s jaw clenched, anger flashing across her face. She turned to leave. “Stop,” Aria said. Maya hesitated. Aria walked up to her slowly, deliberately. “And I’m not talking about just Sienna or Damian.” Her eyes darkened. “I’m talking about Thiago.” Maya stiffened. “I don’t want to see your clingy self anywhere near him again.” Maya spun around. “And who gave you the right to control who I talk to?” Aria didn’t answer. Maya pushed on, bitter now. “You think because they call you the queen of elites, you can boss everyone around? Thiago and I are already becoming close—” The slap landed before she finished. Sharp. Loud. Final. Maya gasped, hand flying to her cheek. Aria leaned in, voice deadly calm. “Have you forgotten who I am?” No one breathed. “This isn’t a conversation,” Aria continued. “It’s a command. And you will obey it.” She straightened. “Get out.” Maya’s friends grabbed her arm instantly. “Let’s go.” They didn’t look back. The door shut behind them. Silence followed. Damian stood frozen, unsure where to look. Sienna exhaled slowly. Lila glanced at Aria. “You didn’t have to go that far.” Aria’s expression didn’t soften. “Yes, I did.” Her eyes flickered briefly—just once—toward the window, where the courtyard lay beyond. Where Thiago might be. And for the first time, there was something dangerous beneath her control. Possession.
