The Kiss That Changed Everything

Chapter 6 Samuel stared at Michael with undisguised anger. The tension between them felt unbearable. Emily stood awkwardly between both men, emotionally exhausted already. “Can we please not do this tonight?” she asked quietly. Michael’s eyes never left Samuel. “He keeps appearing everywhere.” Samuel laughed coldly. “Funny. I was about to say the same thing.” Emily rubbed her forehead tiredly. “This isn’t helping.” Michael finally looked at her. “Come with me.” Samuel immediately frowned. “She’s not going anywhere with you.” Michael’s expression darkened. “I wasn’t talking to you.” Emily sighed shakily. “Stop acting like I belong to either of you.” Silence followed. Samuel looked guilty first. Michael looked frustrated. Emily stepped back slowly. “I’m going home.” Before either man could stop her, she turned and walked away quickly. This time neither followed. But both men watched her leave with completely different fears in their hearts. Samuel feared losing her. Michael feared he had already lost her long ago. — That same night… Jessica sat alone inside her luxurious apartment staring at several photographs spread across the table. Photographs of Emily. Photographs of Michael. And photographs of them together from years ago. Her expression slowly darkened. For years she waited patiently beside Michael. Supported him. Protected him. Loved him. But somehow… Emily always remained the center of his heart. Jessica grabbed one photo angrily. Emily smiling beside Michael beneath city lights. It made her sick. Her phone suddenly vibrated. Mrs. Anderson calling. Jessica answered immediately. “Hello?” Mrs. Anderson’s calm voice came through the line. “Have you handled the Emily situation yet?” Jessica’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Not yet.” Mrs. Anderson sighed impatiently. “You’re losing control of Michael.” Jessica clenched her jaw. “I know.” “He’s becoming reckless again.” Jessica stayed silent. Mrs. Anderson’s tone became colder. “That girl needs to disappear from his life permanently.” Jessica slowly looked down at Emily’s photo again. And for the first time… A dangerous idea formed inside her mind. — The next morning… Emily arrived at work exhausted. Her mind replayed last night repeatedly. Michael’s words. Samuel’s expression. The tension between them. And worst of all… The way her body reacted when Michael touched her. Emily closed her eyes briefly. Why couldn’t she move on? Her coworker noticed immediately. “You look terrible.” Emily forced a weak laugh. “Thanks.” “I mean emotionally terrible.” Emily sighed. “That obvious?” “Very.” Before Emily could answer, the restaurant door opened. And her heart instantly betrayed her again. Michael. Of course. He walked inside wearing a black coat, his intense eyes immediately finding hers. The entire restaurant became quiet again. Emily quickly looked away. Her coworker whispered dramatically. “That man is criminally attractive.” Emily ignored her. Michael approached slowly. “We need to talk.” Emily continued cleaning glasses. “No, we don’t.” Michael lowered his voice. “Please.” Something about the way he sounded made her finally look at him. He looked tired again. Like he barely slept. Emily hated that it affected her. “What now?” she asked quietly. Michael hesitated briefly. “My mother invited you to dinner.” Emily almost dropped the glass in her hand. “What?!” Michael rubbed his jaw frustratedly. “I know.” Emily stared at him like he had lost his mind. “The woman hates me.” “She requested it herself.” Emily laughed nervously. “That’s even scarier.” Michael almost smiled slightly. Almost. Emily noticed it instantly. And suddenly memories hit her again. Michael smiling softly while cooking with her years ago. Michael kissing her forehead gently. Michael promising forever. Emily quickly looked away. Dangerous memories. “Emily.” His voice softened. “She wants to talk.” Emily crossed her arms. “About what?” Michael’s eyes darkened slightly. “She didn’t say.” Emily instantly felt suspicious. Nothing involving Mrs. Anderson was ever simple. “I’m not going.” Michael stepped closer. “I’ll be there.” “That doesn’t make me feel safer.” Michael sighed quietly. “She won’t hurt you.” Emily looked directly into his eyes. “You sound unsure.” Silence. That silence answered enough. Emily felt nervous immediately. But strangely curious too. Why would Mrs. Anderson suddenly invite her after hating her for years? Something felt wrong. Very wrong. — Later that evening… Emily stood nervously outside the enormous Anderson mansion. The place looked exactly like she remembered. Elegant. Cold. Intimidating. Michael stood beside her quietly. “You can still leave if you want.” Emily looked at him. “Do YOU want me to leave?” Michael answered instantly. “No.” The honesty in his voice affected her again. Michael gently opened the door for her. And suddenly… Emily found herself stepping back into the world she once dreamed of belonging to. The mansion staff greeted them formally as they entered. Emily immediately felt underdressed despite wearing her best outfit. Michael noticed her discomfort. “You look beautiful.” Emily’s cheeks warmed slightly. Dangerous. Everything about him was dangerous. Mrs. Anderson waited inside the dining room elegantly. Jessica sat beside her. Of course she did. Jessica’s smile faded slightly when she saw Emily enter with Michael. Mrs. Anderson stood slowly. “Emily Carter.” Emily forced politeness. “Mrs. Anderson.” The older woman studied her carefully. “You’ve changed.” Emily smiled weakly. “So have you.” Michael nearly hid a smile at her boldness. Dinner quickly became uncomfortable. Jessica kept watching Emily closely. Mrs. Anderson remained calm but intimidating. And Michael stayed unusually quiet. Finally, Mrs. Anderson placed down her wine glass. “Emily, how long do you plan on staying in Michael’s life?” The directness shocked everyone slightly. Emily blinked slowly. “I’m sorry?” Mrs. Anderson leaned back elegantly. “My son becomes irrational around you.” Michael immediately spoke. “Mother.” But she ignored him. “I spent years rebuilding him after your relationship ended.” Emily looked hurt instantly. “I never asked him to fall apart.” Mrs. Anderson’s eyes sharpened. “But you did.” Michael’s jaw tightened. “That’s enough.” Mrs. Anderson finally looked at him. “You think love is enough for your world, Michael?” Silence. Then she looked back at Emily. “Do you honestly think you belong here?” The question hit Emily painfully. Because deep down… Part of her always feared the answer. Jessica quietly watched Emily’s expression carefully. Mrs. Anderson continued calmly. “You and Michael come from different realities.” Emily slowly stood up. “I think I should leave.” Michael immediately stood too. “No.” But Emily looked emotionally overwhelmed now. “I can’t breathe in this place.” Michael grabbed her hand gently. “Emily…” And suddenly— Jessica spoke softly. “Maybe Mrs. Anderson is right.” Everyone turned toward her. Jessica looked directly at Emily. “You and Michael only destroy each other.” Emily’s chest tightened. Michael looked furious instantly. “Jessica, stop.” But Jessica stood too. “You know I’m telling the truth.” Then she looked at Emily with fake sympathy. “Michael became cold because of you.” Emily looked shattered. Michael immediately stepped toward her. “Don’t listen to them.” But the pressure suddenly became too much. Emily pulled away quickly. “I need air.” She rushed outside before anyone could stop her. — Cold wind hit Emily’s face the moment she stepped into the garden outside. Her breathing shook emotionally. Mrs. Anderson’s words repeated inside her mind. "Do you honestly think you belong here?" Maybe she didn’t. Maybe loving Michael was always impossible. Footsteps approached behind her. Michael. Of course. Emily wiped her tears quickly. “You shouldn’t have brought me here.” Michael looked furious. “I didn’t know she would do that.” Emily laughed sadly. “She hates me.” Michael stepped closer. “She hates losing control.” Emily looked down quietly. “She’s right though.” Michael frowned immediately. “No.” “We ARE from different worlds.” Michael gently grabbed her face. “I don’t care about that.” Emily’s heart pounded painfully again. “You should.” Michael’s eyes softened. “I tried forgetting you.” Emily froze. Michael slowly moved closer. “But every woman felt wrong after you.” Emily’s breathing became uneven. “Michael…” “I still love you.” Those words shattered the last wall inside her heart. And before she could stop herself— Michael kissed her. Softly. Emotionally. Like he had been starving for her for years. Emily froze completely. Her heart exploded painfully inside her chest. Every memory returned instantly. Every feeling. Every piece of love she tried burying. Michael kissed her like he was terrified to lose her again. And slowly… Emily kissed him back. — But from the mansion balcony above them… Jessica watched everything. And the hatred in her eyes became terrifying.
