Episode Seventeen – Flames In The Dark

449 Words
Night had fallen over Paris, wrapping the city in a velvet cloak. The streetlamps flickered softly, their light reflecting on slick cobblestones from the afternoon rain. Eliana’s apartment felt unusually quiet, almost too quiet, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was outside, waiting. Bryan’s presence beside her was a comfort, though even he moved with a tension she rarely saw. “Something’s off,” he murmured, eyes scanning the street below. “He’s close. I can feel it.” Eliana swallowed hard. “We can’t just hide. We need a plan.” Bryan nodded, his jaw set. “We’ll confront this… carefully. But first, I need you to stay behind me. Promise me.” She nodded, though fear prickled her skin. They moved toward the door together, the soft click of the lock echoing through the apartment. Downstairs, the hallways were shadowed, every sound amplified. A faint whisper of movement caught Bryan’s attention. In one fluid motion, he stepped forward, pulling Eliana behind him. “You don’t belong here,” a voice hissed from the darkness. A figure emerged—a man in black, the one from the gala. His eyes glimmered with a cold, dangerous intelligence. “You’ve been careless, Bryan. Bringing her into this world of yours… so vulnerable, so exposed.” Eliana’s pulse raced. “Who are you?” she demanded, voice steadier than she felt. The man’s lips curled into a thin smile. “Call me… the reckoning.” Bryan’s hand found hers, squeezing gently. “Stay calm,” he murmured. “No sudden moves.” The man circled them slowly, like a predator studying his prey. “I enjoy the games, but don’t mistake my patience for weakness. Soon, everything you love will be at risk… unless you follow my rules.” Eliana’s heart thudded in her chest. She looked up at Bryan, who met her gaze with a silent promise: We’ll survive this. Together. And in that moment, she understood that their love—fragile yet fierce—was their only armor against the coming storm. Before the reckoning could strike further, Bryan acted, moving with precise, almost violent grace. The man in black retreated, disappearing into the night, leaving behind a chilling echo: "This is only the beginning." Eliana sank against Bryan, trembling. “It’s not over, is it?” “No,” Bryan said firmly. “But whatever comes next… we face it together. No running. No hiding.” The city below remained unaware, lights twinkling innocently, as if Paris itself were holding its breath. Somewhere in the darkness, the reckoning plotted his next move—and the battle for their hearts, and their lives, had only just begun.
