Episode Fifteen – Fractured Shadows

494 Words
The soft clink of champagne glasses faded into the hum of the city below as Eliana stepped onto the terrace for a moment of fresh air. The cool night brushed against her skin, and she closed her eyes, trying to calm the storm in her chest. Bryan appeared behind her, silent as a shadow. “You handled yourself well tonight,” he said, voice low. “Even with Kim…” Eliana turned, meeting his gaze. “She’ll always try to get under my skin,” she admitted. “But thanks to you—and Margot—I think I held my own.” Bryan’s lips quirked, a mix of pride and something darker. “You didn’t just hold your own… you shone. And you need to remember that. Paris doesn’t scare you. People trying to undermine you do.” Before she could respond, the terrace doors swung open, and a figure Eliana hadn’t seen before appeared. Tall, impeccably dressed in a sleek black suit, his presence demanded attention without a word. He glanced at Bryan, then at Eliana, and the air seemed to shift around him. “Bryan Donovan,” the man said, voice smooth but cold. “I believe we have unfinished business.” Bryan stiffened, his jaw clenching as he moved subtly in front of Eliana. “This isn’t the place.” The man’s eyes flicked to Eliana, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Oh, I think it’s perfect. She’s the reason you’ll listen this time.” Eliana’s heart hammered. Something about the man screamed danger, the kind that couldn’t be charminged or reasoned with. She instinctively moved closer to Bryan. “Who is he?” she asked, voice barely above a whisper. Bryan’s eyes darkened. “An old problem. One I thought was behind me.” The man stepped closer, his gaze locked on Eliana. “Velvet and venom,” he said softly, almost like a promise. “You both will see the difference soon enough.” Before Bryan could respond, the man turned and disappeared into the crowd, leaving an icy silence in his wake. Eliana felt a shiver run down her spine. “Velvet and… venom?” she echoed, uncertain. Bryan didn’t answer immediately. His protective instincts were in overdrive, and he silently weighed his next move. Finally, he took her hand, gripping it firmly. “We need to be careful,” he said. “Whatever that man is planning, it’s personal. And it’s dangerous. But… I won’t let him hurt you.” Eliana’s fingers tightened around his. “Then we face it together,” she said, echoing the promise she had made herself countless times. Above them, the stars twinkled indifferently, unaware that beneath their glow, a shadow had already begun to weave its web around them. And in that moment, Eliana understood that Paris wasn’t just a city of lights and fashion—it was a city of secrets, and some of them were deadly.
