In his journey, he mostly gets money from working as mercenary. The continent is in turmoil as many kingdoms attempt to take other territory for themselves. This cause the need for mercenary to increase, whether it is to invade, or to defend some area. His proficiency in using halberd and guns always help him to get chosen by the employer. Whatever the fight is, as long as the pay is good and it doesn't stray far from his route, he will take it.
This time, he is hired by some kingdom with black eagle on its flag. They apparently want to take over a city and want the mercenaries to guard the ram. He sighed as the soldier chosen to lead the mercenary explain the situation. Ram guarding is a very dangerous task. They are targeted the most, and if fail, most likely will end dead since the main force would be far behind. He isn't interested of anything that he said. All he care is one thing.
"How much will you pay if i kill the captain?" he ask the soldier after it finish its rambling.
A small city is usually lead by a captain, appointed by the governor of the region. Killing soldiers would only prolong the battle. But killing the captain, will disrupt the enemy chain of command and possibly win the battle swiftly and with few casualty. Now the question is, are they going to pay for it? If not, then he would rather continue his travel
"You think you can beat him? The Mighty Rhino? Are you-" the other mercenary laugh. What's funny to them is beyond him
"Just tell me, how much" he cut him short. The soldier run to his officer, then return.
"A bag of gold coin. Cut off his head and trade it with your prize. This is open to everyone. Whoever manage to kill the captain, would receive a bag of gold coin"
A bag of gold coin? Compared to what he usually receive, its quiet a lot. Usually he only receive around ten to twenty-five gold. He nod at the offer. That would be enough to improve his weapons a lot and buy a horse, a warhorse. Compared to normal horses, warhorse is much more durable, has higher stamina, and could traverse difficult terrain. But they are also way more expensive, maybe worth around ten normal horse. He wonder how many horses he has lost before because of exhaustion or bad terrain
The next day, the army march. It only takes about five hour before the city is in sight. He was planning to climb the wall and immediately search for the captain. But it turns out the wall is higher than he expected. Whether he want it or not, he must enter using the ram. The army main regiments position themselves while the mercenaries start building the ram. It doesn't go without a problem. The enemy shoots arrow toward the mercenary to hinder the building. In some way, it does. But they only delay their doom by a little
The ram march through the no man's land, the land between the army and the wall. It doesn't take long until they are rained by arrow. Some mercenary died, but he and the rest keep pushing. After what seem to be eternity of pushing, the ram finally arrive at the enemy gate
BAM !
BAM !
BAM !
The gate finally breaks down. The mercenaries rush in, then fall to the ground. The captain moved the archers from the gate and walls to the roof of buildings near the gate to shoot any enemy trying to enter. The entrance on the the other hand, is surrounded by barricade and guarded by soldiers with pike.
Some arrow manage to lodge itself in his shoulder and arm, but it doesn't hinder him. He jump above the barricade, and land not far from the captain, with probably hundreds of soldier standing in front of him.
"You doesn't seem to be a normal mercenary" a big bulky guy wearing rhino armor and holding huge war hammer walks forward. Considering he is the only here wearing stupid looking armor, its pretty obvious he is the captain.
"I'm here to kill you" he said simply
The captain smirk before raising his hand. Soldiers around immediately rush toward him, their weapon in hand. A halberd materialize in his hand. In one swift motion, he swirl his halberd. He sliced off the soldiers weapons. The weapons fallen to the ground, followed by the severed head of the soldiers.
"Y-you" the captain and the rest of his soldier froze. The soldiers that tried to attack him fall to the ground, blood spurting out of their decapitated body. He take a step forward, and the soldiers immediately try to back away as far as possible. Except for the captain, who try to stand his ground with all of his willpower
"W-what are you?!" the captain grip his war hammer tightly. His leg start shaking. No one said they would be facing such monster.
The captain body shake as he block the mercenary halberd swing. He never face such strength. His bone rattle just from trying to block. And he must block again, again, and again without a chance to gain composure.
Suddenly, he thrust his halberd toward the captain's face. He jump aside at the last second. This is dangerous, he must run away! His head is filled with plans to escape. He has a smoke bomb he could-
The mercenary's halberd suddenly move sideways, through the captain's neck. He grab his head and raise it up high
"Your captain, is dead"
And with that simple words, the soldiers drop their weapons and run. With the soldiers running and only few left, the main army easily storm the city. With his job done, he walk out of the town to meet the general of the army. He drop the captain's head in front of the general
"I want my payment"
The general seem to be impressed, he had expected that many of his men would die just to take down the famous Mighty Rhino. But now, in front of him, stand the man who slay the captain alone. Maybe the Rhino is not as mighty as he thought, but then again, this man slay him before the battle even began
"Say, how about you join-"
With money in hand, he doesn't need to be here anymore. He just start walking away without listening to the general's offer. Its always the same. His freedom for money and power. He would rather not
"Wait! At least tell us your name"
"Grim" he said while keep walking away
