Chapter Nine: The Distance Between Them

371 Words
Ethan wanted to help Emily, but he understood that his position could complicate matters. He had financial interests in Steele & Grace. If he appeared to intervene personally in Emily's case, Victoria might use their friendship to question the fairness of the investigation. So he contacted the company's legal department and requested an independent review of the security records. He told Emily what he had done. “I don't want you to think I'm trying to manage your situation,” he explained. “I simply want the evidence examined properly.” “I appreciate that.” “Would you prefer that I stay out of it?” Emily considered the question. “No. I just need to know that you're doing this because it's right, not because you think I owe you something.” “I don't expect anything from you.” She believed him. That did not mean she suddenly became comfortable depending on him. For several days, they spoke only about the investigation. Emily was frightened that people would assume their friendship had given her special treatment. Ethan understood her concern and gave her space. Meanwhile, the rumors spread. Some people accused Emily of leaking the designs to gain attention. Others suggested that Ethan had become involved with her and was protecting her because of it. The gossip hurt more than she expected. She began wondering whether their friendship had become a burden. When Ethan called one evening, she told him she needed some distance until the investigation was resolved. There was a pause. “Of course,” he said. “I don't want to lose your friendship.” “You haven't.” “I just need to know that I can clear my name without anyone suggesting that you did it for me.” “Then we'll let the evidence speak.” He did not argue or demand reassurance. After they ended the call, Emily felt both relieved and sad. She missed their conversations. She missed the easy way they had begun to laugh together. But she was grateful that Ethan respected her decision, even when it meant stepping back from someone he had come to care about. Neither understood yet how much that respect would matter later.
