The charity event took place in the town’s largest hall.
I knew it had to be important the moment we arrived.
Cars lined the long driveway outside the building. Expensive ones. Black SUVs, polished sedans, a few luxury cars I couldn’t even name. People stood near the entrance talking in small groups, dressed in suits and evening dresses like this was some kind of formal celebration.
Lucas parked the car and leaned back in his seat.
“Welcome to small-town politics,” he said.
I looked out the window.
“It looks more like a gala.”
“That’s because it is.”
Lucas stepped out and walked around to my side of the car.
When I got out, the evening air felt cooler than I expected.
Music drifted faintly from inside the building.
