Lucas became comfortable with me far too quickly. It happened the next morning. I had barely stepped into the kitchen when he looked up from the counter and said, “Good. You’re alive.” I stopped halfway through the doorway. “Should I not be?” Lucas grinned and took a sip from his glass. “You disappeared early yesterday. Adrian said you probably went to sleep.” “He talks about me when I’m not there?” Lucas shrugged. “Not really. He just… notices things.” That sounded about right. I walked into the kitchen slowly. The Walters kitchen was almost as large as the living room. Bright morning light poured through the tall windows above the sink, lighting up the polished counters and the huge island in the center.
