In a flurry of movement, Charles is leaning over me, cradling my face between those rough, calloused palms with a reverence that steals my breath away. "Easy, sweetheart. Don't try to talk just yet," he soothes, those beloved eyes drinking me in like a man witnessing a miracle. "You're in the hospital - hell, we both are. But you're going to be okay now. I've got you." Tears prick my eyes as the full weight of his words sinks in. We're alive. Battered and injured, yes, but gloriously, impossibly alive after staring down the very jaws of death itself. A ragged, disbelieving laugh bubbles up from somewhere deep in my aching chest. Charles blinks away the sheen of moisture glazing his own eyes as his expression softens into a tremulous, wonder-struck smile. "There's my girl," he murmurs thickly. "Laughing in the face of danger as always." I want to respond, to finally unleash the swirling torrent of emotions that's been building like a maelstrom within me since this whole insane ordeal began. But my lips can't seem to form the words, my throat too ravaged and abused to give them life. Sensing my struggle, Charles simply shakes his head, his thumb grazing my cheek in a tender caress. "Shh, don't strain yourself, Cassie. Not after everything you've been through." His eyes take on a haunted look as they drift over the myriad tubes and monitors, no doubt tallying the full extent of my injuries. "You have no idea how close we came to... to losing you out there." My brow furrows as flashes of memory pierce the fog - the savage clash with the monster, the blinding agony lancing through my body, Charles's anguished cries echoing all around me. It all comes rushing back in kaleidoscopic fragments of horror. With what little strength remains, I force my leaden hand to move, grasping feebly for his. Charles instantly interlaces our fingers, grip firm yet infinitely gentle as his piercing gaze bores into mine. "You saved me," I rasp, each word like jagged shards of glass tearing at my abraded throat. "How...?" Pain lances across his features as he swallows hard, the muscle in his jaw ticking. "I did what I had to do to keep you alive, Cass. Even if that meant capturing that... that thing that hurt you." He shakes his head, lips pressing into a grim line. "I wasn't about to let it slip away and keep hurting innocent people, not after what it put us through." A chill ripples through me at the memory of the terrifying creature - all bristling fur, fangs longer than my forearm, and those spiral, soulless eyes burning with inhuman malice. Just picturing those unholy features is enough to quicken my pulse in primal terror, even after the fact. As if sensing my unease, Charles gives my hand a reassuring squeeze, effectively grounding me back in the moment. "Hey, it's over now," he soothes, that familiar gentle timbre immediately quieting my rising panic. "I promised you I'd keep you safe, and I meant it with every fiber of my being." My chest aches with a swell of affection so profound, it nearly steals what little breath remains from my starved lungs. Here is a man who stared down unspeakable evil without flinching - who put his own life on the line repeatedly to shield me from harm's path. All for me, the woman whose heart he's unknowingly held captive for longer than I can recall. Unbidden tears blur my vision as I cling to his anchoring touch, silently willing him to sense the depth of emotion radiating from my very soul. In this moment, there's nothing I want more than to finally give voice to the feelings I've kept locked away for far too long. Charles's brow furrows in concern as he traces the glistening tracks of moisture streaking my cheeks. "Cassie? What is it, sweetheart?" Mustering what little strength remains, I part my cracked, bloodied lips to finally speak the truth I've been carrying all this time. "Charles, I... I lo—" The words are abruptly stolen from my tongue as the door to the stark hospital room swings open, permitting the gruff figure of my father to stride through. He halts in his tracks upon taking in the scene, surprise flickering across his weathered features. "Oh, good - you're awake!" His expression softens almost imperceptibly as he moves to Charles's side, resting one hand on his shoulder in an uncharacteristically tender gesture. "You had us worried there for a while, kiddo." As much as I long to simply bask in the comfort of Charles's presence once more, a new urgency bubbles up within me at my dad's words. "Wait...what happened?" I croak weakly. "With the creature? Did you..." My father's jaw tightens grimly as he exchanges a weighted look with Charles. "We subdued it at first - barely," he replies in a low, laden tone. "Got the damned thing trussed up and sedated for transport to a... secure facility..." My father's eyes move oddly as he waits for Charles to proceed. "Then, I killed it an hour ago after considering how much it hurt Cassie."
