After freshening up, I rejoin Charles in the waiting room, my heart fluttering at the sight of his warm smile. He motions for me to take a seat beside him. "I've arranged for us to stay at a motel nearby," he says in a hushed tone. "I didn't think it was safe to go back home after...what happened." I nod solemnly, the memories of that monstrous creature still vividly etched in my mind. "Thank you for looking out for me, Charles. I don't know what I'd do without you." His eyes soften as he reaches out to give my hand a reassuring squeeze. "You don't have to thank me, Cass. I'll always protect you, no matter what." A shiver runs down my spine at the intensity of his gaze, and I find myself momentarily lost in those deep brown eyes. Clearing my throat, I tear my gaze away. "Have you heard any updates on Larry's condition?" Charles shakes his head grimly. "The doctors say he's still in critical condition from the blood loss. But he's a fighter; I'm sure he'll pull through." Guilt twists in my gut. If only we had been more careful in those woods... We lapse into pensive silence, both of us lost in our troubling thoughts. After what feels like an eternity, a doctor finally emerges, her face grim. "Miss Cassie? Mr. Charles?" she calls out. "Could you come with me, please?" Charles and I exchange an apprehensive glance before rising to our feet and following the doctor down the sterile hallway. My palms grow clammy with dread. The doctor leads us into a small consultation room and shuts the door behind us. "I'm afraid I have some difficult news," she begins, her tone grave. "Mr. Rivers has slipped into a coma due to the extent of his injuries. At this point, it's uncertain whether he'll regain consciousness." The weight of her words slams into me like a freight train, and I stumble back, bracing myself against the wall. "Oh god...Larry..." I choke out, tears welling in my eyes. Charles's arm wraps protectively around my shoulders, steadying me. "Is there anything that can be done, doctor?" he asks, his voice strained. The doctor shakes her head solemnly. "We're doing everything we can, but the next 24 hours will be critical. I'd advise you both to prepare for the worst." With that ominous warning, she exits the room, leaving Charles and me to grapple with the devastating news. Tears stream down my cheeks as the reality of the situation sinks in. Larry, my childhood friend, is hanging between life and death – all because of that...that thing in the woods. "Cassie..." Charles murmurs, his voice thick with emotion. He pulls me into a tight embrace, and I cling to him, drawing strength from his solid warmth. "Why did this have to happen?" I sob into his chest. "We were just out hiking, having fun...and now Larry might not make it because of that monster." Charles tenses at the mention of the creature, and I feel him swallow hard. "I know, sweetheart. I know. But we can't talk about that here – it's not safe." My brow furrows in confusion. "What do you mean? Who could possibly be listening?" He shakes his head grimly. "I'm not sure, but we have to be careful. That...thing...we encountered wasn't normal, Cass. I have a sinking feeling this goes much deeper than we realize." A shudder ripples through me at the somber look in his eyes. Whatever Charles suspects, it can't be good. But I trust him implicitly; if he says we need to be cautious, then cautious we'll be. Pulling back, I gaze up at him with determination. "You're right. We'll have to be on guard, for Larry's sake...and our own safety." Charles nods, his expression hardening with resolve. "Come on, let's get out of here. I'd rather not stay in this place a moment longer than necessary." As we exit the hospital into the inky night, I can't shake the uneasy feeling that we're being watched. Every shadow seems to harbor untold dangers, every noise a potential threat. Charles keeps me tucked securely against his side as we hurry towards his truck. But before we reach it, a hauntingly familiar sound pierces the air – the bone-chilling howl that still haunts my nightmares. I freeze in my tracks, my blood turning to ice in my veins. "Charles..." I whimper, clutching his arm in terror. "Please tell me you heard that..." The muscle in his jaw ticks as he nods stiffly. "I heard it. Get in the truck, Cassie. Now." Without another word, he ushers me into the passenger seat and slams the door shut behind me. As the engine roars to life, I chance one last look over my shoulder. And there, lurking in the shadows of the parking lot, a pair of glowing eyes stares back at me with feral hunger.
