Somehow, without me noticing, a torrential downpour had broken out.
When it rains, it really pours. Everything just had to go wrong today.
My car was in the shop, and I could not hail a single ride up here on the mountain.
All I could do was trudge down the narrow mountain path step by step.
A dull, throbbing ache had started pulsing behind my temples too.
I leaned against a tree on the side of the path, gasping for breath.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated twice with a buzzing sound. It was a message from Clara.
Attached was a photo. The background was an airport VIP lounge, and Jasper had his head dipped down, pressing an affectionate kiss to the corner of her mouth.
She had framed the shot perfectly. The two of them looked passionately wrapped up in each other.
Right under the photo, she had typed a line.
Clara: Ms. Reed, Jasper says he regrets ever being with you. Wasting all that time on you. I am the only one he has ever loved.
Raindrops spattered against my phone screen, blurring the faces of those two bastards.
I stared at the photo for a few long seconds, and suddenly I laughed.
Tears mixed with the rain rolled down my face, tasting bitter and acrid on my tongue.
After all those years together, I never thought things with Jasper would really end with us turning on each other and becoming bitter enemies.
Fine, then. If that was how they wanted it, I would not let those two get off easy.
I backed out of our chat, opened my social media feed straight away, and uploaded the unedited photo. I typed a sharp, biting caption.
Iris: Homewrecker and her mutt, together forever.
I clicked into the privacy settings, and deliberately set it so only Jasper and our handful of mutual friends could see it.
I hit send, and that was it.
It did not even take five minutes before Jasper's call came blaring through.
The contact name I had given him, "Asshole", flashed and jumped wildly across the screen.
I did not answer. I just let the ringtone wail through the pouring rain.
The pain in my head spiked, getting worse and worse, until it felt like my skull was splitting open.
My legs gave out completely. I slid down the rough tree trunk and crumpled to the ground.
Blood gushed from my nose and mouth, trickling slowly down my chin and seeping into the collar of my shirt.
My phone slipped out of my limp, useless hand.
And my consciousness was swallowed whole by endless darkness, drowned out by the drumming of the rain.
