Chapter Five

Fenris’ POV
Sitting in my study, once again I find it difficult to concentrate. As usual, I step out into my balcony taking a sit to enjoy the view I never tire of seeing. Right now, it's midday, and the clear blue sky is barely marred by a dark cloud.
Below, in my lush green fields, my clan worked hard to make sure the land produced bountiful proceeds. Their little ones played across the field with abandon. The mixed scents of the ornamental flowers planted below permeated the air. The barking of a dog in the distance caught my attention reminding me of a dog I once had as a kid.
Although the whole atmosphere had put me in a better mood, the calm that I sought still eluded me. All I thought of was the look of hurt on Sasha’s face as I brush her off after our time together. On a normal, am not supposed to feel anything. She was supposed to be a means to an end but she kept getting under my skin by the minute.
At first, I thought due to my extended celibacy, the sight of an alluring woman awakened my sleeping hormones and what I needed to get her out of my mind was hot s****l intercourse but I guess I was wrong.
From the moment I dismissed her from my room, till now I still can’t get her off my mind. I barely slept a wink because each time I closed my eyes the image of her hurt face, surfaced like an ancient wall refusing to go down. Sometimes when am able to will her face out of the way, memories of our lovemaking surfaced making me ache for her all over again. Her passionate face, her full lips, her ample breasts, everything about her threatened to drive me over the edge. This was maddening and at the same time foreign. I had always prided myself to be an independent man, hardly ever influenced by anyone or anything. Only this time, that does not seem to be the case.
Lost in my conflicted thoughts, I almost missed the quiet entrance of my stepbrother Shade.
“Shade, how many times have I told you to knock before entering this room,” I asked in exasperation clearly miserable from my lack of sleep, but I will be damned before I admit that to him.
Standing, I turn to face my stepbrother with one of my best stern looks. He just shrugged, hands folded across his chest with a bland look, clearly unaffected by my mood.
Though we are not very close, we still understood each other at some level. Only that he enjoys getting on my nerves sometimes with his outright undermining of my authority.
He is the bastard son of my father. A result of his affairs outside his marriage. My father had him a year before me but as an illegitimate son of my father, he was not allowed to inherit the position of the alpha which was then passed on to me after his death.
“Why are you here, Shade?”
“Can’t I come to see my baby brother anymore?” he retorted with a face that did not deceive me even for a second. Imitating his former stance, I fold my arms across my chest leaned against the wall, and raised an eyebrow.
From my reaction, he could tell I took his words with a pinch of salt.
“Ok fine. I heard you brought a lady home, who is she?”
I was not surprised by his question. In fact, I would have been surprised if he did not ask. With a sigh, I invited him to have a sit while I explained everything that transpired between me and Sasha’s father.
“Out of everything you could ask for why did you ask for his step-daughter?”
Shade is always the sharp one. Never missing any details. I was a bit hesitant to give him a reply but on second thought, I told him.
“Do you know the former alpha of the thunder packs?”
“Yes, I do what about him?”
“She is his daughter, and am sure you know what that implies from the look on your face?”
“Wait, what you are trying to say is that within her lies his great power”
With a nod of my head, I replied “Yes”.
“I never knew you were this ambitious brother. I guess they don’t call you ruthless for nothing” he said with a smile.
Just when I wanted to respond to his jab, I notice a familiar scent. Turning sharply to the half-open door, I notice a fleeting shadow. Thinking I might have been mistaken, I turn back to Shade only to find him staring at me with an odd look.
“if that is all you came to find out then I must excuse myself.” With that, I rose from my seat.
“See you later brother. By the way, she is quite pretty”
“Wait, what? Have you met her?”
“Not really, I noticed her at the door while we spoke”
“Oh, no!!” I exclaimed my heart lurching into my stomach. How much had she heard?
Without a second look at my brother, I headed off toward the direction of her room barging inside immediately. As I feared, she was nowhere to be seen, though it was obvious she collected none of her belongings.
Worried, I contacted Andrew.
“Andrew, have you seen Sasha”
“Do you mean the lady that moved in yesterday?”
“Yes”
“Yes, I have. I saw her storm out of the house in tears. Before I could stop her, she rushed into the cab that waited for her and took off.”
“And did you try to stop the cab from leaving?”
The short pause was all the answer I needed.
“It’s ok, thank you”
Immediately, I felt this sudden pain of loss I could not explain, crash into me. When did I start developing feelings for her? When did things get to this point? How did I get to this point?
Wrecked by strange emotions, I walked towards the bed and sat on it to rationalize my thoughts and understand my feelings. That was when it hit me hard on the head. I had lost my heart to her the moment she entered my study looking surprised, I loved her more while I watched her sleep and I lost my very essence after we made love.
“Is this sorcery?”
What have I done?
I deserved to be knocked over for not realizing she felt the same way. At least the look she had when I dismissed her was a dead giveaway that she wanted more than just great s*x. She wanted my heart only unknown to her she already had it.
Sitting on the bed filled with regret, I made a solemn vow to find her no matter what and bring her back even if it warrants me begging.
With that, I left the room to gather a search party or should I say a hunting party to help bring back my one true love.
