As the little yellow fish lay still on the ground, watching helplessly, it saw the heavily injured man before it. The thief approached slowly, a sharp dagger gleaming in his hand. Finally free to brandish his weapon, he reveled in the opportunity to strike back after being thoroughly suppressed by Wen Xuan. His twisted expression transformed into one of cruel bloodlust.
“Say goodbye,” he sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. The three words hung in the air like a deathly scythe, sharp and malicious. The dagger was poised, ready to plunge into the man’s back with just one more step.
The thief raised one leg, ready to strike.
The little yellow fish squinted at the shining blade, forcing itself to suppress the rush of fear. It had to act! How could it just stand by and do nothing? So, it jumped in a determined and desperate leap, positioning its pale belly directly under the thief’s foot, fearfully gazing up at the dark sole of the shoe, which was speckled with shards of broken glass.
Being pierced by glass would surely hurt terribly.
But becoming fish paste didn’t matter anymore…
Would a fish shed tears before it died? The little yellow fish didn't know, but there were no shimmering pearls falling from its wide, fearful fish eyes. This further confirmed that it had no connection to mermaids, perhaps ever.
It caught sight of the man lifting his head slightly, his gaze meeting that of the little fish’s with a hint of surprise. Oddly enough, this gave the little yellow fish a sense of calm. A fish's life could be extraordinary or incredibly mundane; right now, it could only wait quietly for death to arrive.
It accepted its fate willingly.
“Please, a lightning strike to take him down!” it thought in its little fish mind, wishing for a miracle.
Suddenly, the heavy shoe descended rapidly, but just as it was about to strike, it hesitated in mid-air. The thief lowered his eyes and seemed to notice the scheming little yellow fish lying beneath him. A sinister smile crept onto his lips.
The little yellow fish thought, “You can’t look down on a fish like this!”
Though the thief couldn’t fathom why the little fish was daring enough to position itself there, he knew slipping or tripping would not bode well for him. Fortunately, destiny seemed to be on his side; thus, he could mitigate many risks through careful actions.
Even at the moment of victory, one must never be complacent.
Thinking this, he glanced at Wen Xuan, who had also noticed the little fish. The little yellow fish seemed to be waiting for a moment of stumble or imbalance, expecting to counterattack upon death. But no, that opportunity was lost for his opponent.
Still, there was no need for Wen Xuan to wear such a cold, oppressive expression, tightening his mortality in his final moments. The thief pulled his foot back slightly, feeling triumphant as he looked at the battered Wen Xuan, then stomped down confidently.
The shoe hovered above, just the right distance to inflict a fatal blow to end the troublesome man’s life.
Simultaneously, a dying silver fish leaped, landing precisely on the thief's second footfall, silently taking its last breath.
Without a hint of hesitation, the thief stepped onto the slick, wriggling body of the fish. The chaos of their earlier struggle had exhausted most of his strength, and he had no time to stabilize himself. It was as if he had slipped on a banana peel, launching himself off the balcony…
Shattering through the glass door, he plummeted with terrified screams, scattering shards of glass into the air like confetti, culminating in a free-fall descent.
The thud of his body hitting the ground echoed from below, and the little yellow fish finally reacted, retrieving its dazed gaze. Misfortune often didn’t care for logic, after all.
But… was this really possible?!
The little fish covered its eyes, unable to watch the scene unfold. “A white fish, may you rest in peace…” it thought to itself as it awaited the outcomes of fate, a mix of relief and disbelief swirling within it.
