Choosing Fish Food

824 Words
By the time Wen Xuan returned home, it was already quite late. He carefully scooped the little fish out of the water bag with a clean, delicate net and placed it into the fish tank. Seeing it swim healthily and energetically in the water, showing no signs of discomfort from its return, he couldn't help but smile. This fish was easy to take care of. He then turned and went into the kitchen to cook. Before leaving, he remembered to take a portion of the new fish food he had just bought and added it to the tank. This was the best-selling high-grade fish food of the year, said to be the brand specifically favored by the notoriously picky imperial carps. Perhaps the little fish would be willing to eat some once it got home, he thought. As soon as the fish food hit the water, the fish in the tank began to scramble for the new food source. Such a rare flavor was not something they encountered often. The little fish saw the red-braised meat-flavored fish food it had just spat out being quickly devoured by a silver fish, which swallowed it in one swift motion without even chewing. Be careful not to choke, please… Another bright red fish focused on a type of pale yellow pellet that looked smooth and soft, with no pungent smell. Embracing the spirit of a fish adapting to its environment, the little yellow fish closed its eyes and took a bite. What a mouthful of dregs… Pfft, pfft, pfft! It decisively gave up, lest it become the first fish to choke on fish food… a foolish fish. After removing his scarf and washing his hands, the man sat down on a chair not far from the fish tank. On the table in front of him were a few simple home-cooked dishes, perfectly warm and ready to eat. He leisurely scooped a bowl of fresh soup and took a few sips before elegantly picking up a piece of meat that was cooked just right. As he casually turned his head, he caught sight of the little yellow fish sticking to the glass tank like it had been pressed against it. It smells so good… The tempting aroma could be sensed even through the thick water. Red-braised meat! Authentic! I can’t stand it! The little yellow fish tried to flatten its belly against the tank to show just how hungry it was. Not being able to communicate verbally was a major obstacle for survival. Wen Xuan couldn't help but twitch the corner of his eye. He tried to lift his chopsticks, and the little fish's white belly moved up in response, its beady eyes fixed on the delicious-smelling food. Wen Xuan silently watched as the little fish seemed ready to leap out of the tank, feeling somewhat helpless. He broke the piece of meat into smaller bits, placed them in a spoon, and raised it above the tank. The little yellow fish began diligently practicing its jumping skills, aiming for the spoon without a doubt. The man seemed to chuckle softly, tilting his hand slightly and pouring the fragrant morsels into the tank. Since the little fish liked to eat the food he made, and his friend had said it wouldn't affect its health, he thought it wouldn't hurt to let it eat like this for a while. He bent down, watching with interest as the little fish enjoyed the tasty morsels. Down it goes, down it goes, please keep your collar tucked in! The little yellow fish squinted its eyes, glancing at the honey-colored chest, and took a bite of the minced meat. Wide open, huh, dear! Watching the little fish roll around happily after eating, Wen Xuan felt a bit cheerful. He quickly finished his dinner, washed the dishes, and put everything away. After confirming that the little fish was no longer eating, he changed the slightly murky water in the tank for fresh water. The little yellow fish was happily watching the television in the center of the living room. The angle of the fish tank allowed it to clearly see the images on the big screen. Although it couldn't read the Martian characters, understanding the images was an essential survival skill for fish. As it watched, it couldn't help but turn its eyes toward the bathroom. The sound of running water indicated that someone was using it. The little yellow fish maintained a serious expression, ignoring the other fish swimming around, and quietly moved to the corner of the tank, ensuring its body was aligned with the bathroom door. Thinking about the honey-colored chest glistening with droplets of water… the little fish secretly adjusted its floating height, positioning itself perfectly in the middle of the tank. Suddenly… “Beep beep beep!” Huh? What’s that sound? It flicked its tail; it sounded like a communication device alerting from the bathroom. Could that thing be waterproof?
