She gazed at her mother's limp body and her frozen eyes. She looked up immediately hoping that it wasn't what she was thinking.
“Doctor, please tell me what the problem is,” she said, feeling anxious and scared at the same time.
“We tried our very best but we couldn't save her, he said trying to be cautious with his words. “What do you mean?” Audrey asked alarmed.
The doctor sighed and dropped the bombshell, “Your mother is dead, accept my condolence” he said and left with the nurse he came with.
Audrey was left standing there, her mother's lifeless body in front of her, the truth hanging in the air like a curse.
And then, the voice of her sister who had been quiet all along cut through the silence, cold and accusatory. "You killed her," Gina said, her eyes blazing with anger. "You killed our mother."
Audrey felt like she had been punched in the gut, her breath knocked out of her. She tried to speak, to defend herself, but the words wouldn't come.
All she could do was stand there, frozen in horror, as her sister's words cut her to the bone.
Gina's eyes blazed with anger and hurt as she took a step closer to Audrey. "You killed her," she repeated, her voice shaking with emotion. "You killed our mother."
Audrey felt a wave of grief wash over her, followed by a crushing sense of guilt. She knew that she had made a terrible mistake, one that had cost her mother's life.
She took a step forward, her hands outstretched in a pleading gesture. "Gina, please," she said, her voice cracking with emotion. "How can you say something like this? I just did what I had to so her life could be saved. I didn't mean to hurt her. I….. she trailed off because she didn't know how to calm her sister.
Gina was beyond reasoning. She shook her head, her eyes filled with tears. "You should have just let her die," she spat. "At least then she wouldn't have died knowing what you did. Mom trusted and believed in you so much but you failed her. I will never forgive you for this," she said with so much anger.
Audrey felt like she had been slapped. She took a step back, her eyes filling with tears. "Gina, don't say that," she pleaded. "I did it for mom. I did it for us."
But Gina just shook her head again. "You did it for yourself," she said. "You did it because you're selfish and reckless. I don't want to ever see your face again. I feel disgusted,” she said and left.
Audrey felt a wave of despair wash over her. She knew that she had lost her sister, lost her family. She was alone now, alone with her grief and her guilt.
She turned and ran from the room, tears streaming down her face. She didn't know where she was going, she just knew she had to get away.
As she ran, she felt like she was leaving behind everything that mattered to her. She was leaving behind her family, her home, her sense of self.
She finally collapsed on a bench outside the hospital, exhausted and emotionally drained. She buried her face in her hands and wept, wept for her mother, wept for her sister, wept for herself.
As she sat there, she felt like she was hitting rock bottom. She had lost everything that mattered to her, and she didn't know how to get it back.
She wiped her tears away and stood up, looking around her. She knew that she had a long way to go, but she was ready to start the journey.
She took a deep breath and began to walk, away from the hospital and away from her past. She didn't know what the future held, but she was ready to face it head-on without looking back.
After a while, Audrey found herself at a small café. She went inside and ordered a cup of coffee, sitting down at a table by the window.
As she sipped her coffee, Audrey thought of what she could do. For her to start her life again she knew she had to get a job and find a place to live.
Audrey, a little overwhelmed by her thoughts, placed her head on the table with her eyes shut. Few minutes later, a lady approached her table. She tapped the table a little and Audrey looked up. "Mind if I join you?" she asked, smiling.
Audrey shook her head, and the lady sat down. "I'm Sarah," she said. "I couldn't help but notice that you look a little lost."
Audrey smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards this stranger. "I am a little lost," she admitted. "I just lost my mom, and my sister is angry with me."
Sarah's expression softened. "I'm so sorry," she said. "Losing someone is never easy."
Audrey nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. "It's not just that," she said. "I also did something that I'm.….not proud of. Something that hurt my mom and my sister."
Sarah leaned forward, her eyes filled with compassion. "We all make mistakes," she said patting her hands. "The important thing is that we learn from them."
Audrey nodded, feeling a sense of hope and peace. Maybe, just maybe, she could learn from her mistakes and start over.
“So tell me, where do you live and what do you do?” Sarah asked. “I don't have a home. Currently, my sister doesn't want to see me so I left home,” Audrey responded.
“I'm sorry if I'm being too intrusive, but what happened between you two?” Sarah asked curious. Audrey sighed and narrated every single thing that happened.
After narrating, Sarah took her hand in hers and comforted her. “You've really gone through so much in just two days. It's going to be fine soon okay?” She said reassuring her.
“I work at a local recruitment agency and we're always looking for new talent. So, If you're interested, I could give you a referral,” she said
Audrey's eyes lit up. "That would be amazing," she said. "I really need a job."
Sarah smiled. "Alright by next week we can set up an interview."
“You can squat with me for the main time until you're able to get an apartment of your own,” Sarah offered. “Thank you so much Sarah,” she said grateful to have found a lady like her.
Audrey landed a job at the marketing firm through Sarah's referral. She worked hard, determined to make a new life for herself.
Three months down the line,Audrey began to feel unwell. She was tired all the time, and her stomach was always churning. Plus she had terrible migraines.
At first, she thought it was just stress, but as the symptoms persisted, she knew she had to see a doctor.
The doctor ran series of test and gave her the results
. She opened slowly wondering what was in it. She hoped it wasn't something big…
