CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE: STORMY NIGHTS. KEYENA’S POV The storm outside hammered against the windows of my apartment, each gust of wind rattling the glass like it wanted to break in. Inside, the only light came from three flickering candles on my nightstand, casting long, trembling shadows across the walls. At twenty-seven, I had built my life around order. My shelves perfectly alphabetized at the library, bills paid on time, emotions tucked neatly away. m**********n had never fit into that picture. A couple of clumsy attempts back in college had left me feeling awkward and unsatisfied. Tonight the power died at 9:17 p.m., and with it went every excuse I had left. I stripped down to a thin white tank top and a pair of cotton panties that already felt too tight. The fabric clung to my skin.
