Sweat dripped down Devon Sanchez’s brow as he sprinted across the court, the rhythmic squeak of sneakers echoing in the gym. The rays from the setting sun streamed through the windows, casting golden streaks across the polished floor. Basketball practice had started before dawn, and while most of the team was dragging, Devon was just hitting his stride.
“Yo, Devon! Corner shot!” Alan Williams, his co-captain and best friend, called out from the other side of the key. Devon didn’t miss a beat. He caught the ball mid-air, pivoted, and drained the shot with a perfect swish. The gym erupted in cheers and groans from his teammates.
“That’s what I’m talkin’ about!” Alan hollered, grinning. His locs, pulled back into a loose ponytail, swung as he jogged over for a fist bump. “Man, you’re making the rest of us look bad.” Devon smirked, brushing a hand over his short waves. “What can I say? Some of us just have natural talent.” “More like a natural ego,” Alan shot back, laughing.
The team circled up, catching their breath as Coach Daniels blew his whistle. “Good work, fellas. That’s it for today. Hit the showers and get to class before Principal Lewis has my head.” As the team began to disperse, Jackie Allister appeared in the doorway. Even in the simple cheer uniform, she exuded confidence. Her honey-brown skin glowed under the gym lights, and her long, straightened hair cascaded over her shoulders. She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, with a knowing smile on her lips.
“Devon,” she called, her voice smooth and sweet, but just loud enough to draw attention. Alan rolled his eyes and muttered under his breath, “Here we go.” Devon walked over, grinning. “What’s up, Jackie?”
Jackie stepped closer, resting a manicured hand on his arm. “Just came to remind you about tonight. The celebration at the estate. It’s not every day the future alpha turns eighteen, you know.” Devon nodded, his smile faltering slightly. “Yeah, I remember.” Jackie’s gaze flickered to Alan, who was watching the interaction with an amused smirk. “You’re coming too, right?” Alan shrugged. “Wouldn’t miss it. Someone’s gotta make sure this guy doesn’t get into too much trouble.” Jackie laughed as she rolled her eyes. “I guess. See you both tonight then.”
As she walked away, Alan leaned in close to Devon. “Man, she’s got you on a leash.” “Shut up,” Devon muttered, shoving him playfully. But even as they joked, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to change.
Chanel Debrev adjusted the strap of her backpack as she and her best friend, Vanessa Ramirez, walked through the school hallway. It was a little late since school was already out, and the building was quiet, save for the faint hum of fluorescent lights. Chanel tugged at the edge of her sweater, her dark curls framing her face as she glanced at Vanessa. “You know we didn’t have to come today, right? That paper’s not due for two days.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes, her thick braids swinging as she walked. “Girl, please. You know I’m not about to be scrambling the night before. Besides, you needed the motivation.” “I don’t need motivation,” Chanel protested. “I just...work better under pressure.” Vanessa raised an eyebrow. “You mean you procrastinate until the last possible second.” Chanel couldn’t help but laugh. “Fine, you’re right. But I still don’t see why we have to—”
She stopped mid-sentence as they entered the gym to cut through to the library. The lingering scent of sweat and cologne hit her first, but then something else—a scent so intoxicating it stopped her in her tracks. It was earthy and warm, like sandalwood and freshly fallen rain. “What’s wrong?” Vanessa asked, frowning. Chanel didn’t answer. Her heart was racing, and her wolf stirred inside her, whispering a single word.
Mate.
On the other side of the gym, Devon froze. He had just tossed his towel over his shoulder when the most incredible scent hit him. It was sweet, like wildflowers and honey, and it pulled him in like a magnet. His wolf growled in his chest, a low, possessive rumble.
Mate.
He turned toward the scent and saw her—Chanel Debrev. She stood near the bleachers, her wide, doe-like eyes locked on his. Her dark brown skin seemed to glow under the gym lights, and her curls framed her face like a halo. He couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. “Yo, Devon!” Alan called out, snapping him out of his trance. Devon didn’t even glance at Alan. He was already moving, his feet carrying him toward Chanel without a second thought.
Vanessa stepped in front of her friend, her expression sharp. “Uh, what are you doing?” But Devon barely registered her presence. His eyes were locked on Chanel, his wolf howling in triumph. Jackie chose that moment to re-enter the gym, her face lighting up when she spotted Devon—until she noticed where he was headed. Her smile vanished, replaced by a look of confusion and then fury. “Devon!” she called, her voice cutting through the tension like a knife. He stopped in his tracks, the spell momentarily broken. Jackie stormed over, her heels clicking loudly against the floor. “What are you doing?” she demanded, her gaze flickering between Devon and Chanel. Devon opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. His wolf growled in frustration, and he took a step back, suddenly unsure of what to do.
Chanel grabbed Vanessa’s arm. “We need to go.” Vanessa didn’t argue. She shot Devon a glare before leading Chanel out of the gym, her protective instincts kicking into high gear. As the doors swung shut behind them, Jackie rounded on Devon. “What the hell was that?” Alan, who had been watching the scene unfold with barely concealed amusement, stepped in before Devon could answer. “Relax, Jackie. It’s probably just the heat getting to him.” But Jackie wasn’t buying it. She crossed her arms, her jaw tight as she glared at Devon. “We’re talking about this later.” Devon didn’t respond. His eyes were still on the doors Chanel had disappeared through, his heart pounding in his chest. Alan clapped Devon on the back, his tone light but his gaze sharp. “Well, this just got interesting.” Devon didn’t say a word. He couldn’t. His mind was spinning, and all he could think about was Chanel.
And how his entire world had just changed.
