A week later Lucas was sitting in his office, and going through the profile of women Tom had compiled. They all had good backgrounds but for some strange reason he felt something was missing, he knew he should not be bothered because they had good records and this was strictly a business deal with no feelings attached, yet he could not make up his mind.
“Have you found anyone that has caught your attention sir?” Tom asked him.
“No” he said flatly.
“I think you should go out with one or two of them sir…you know, just to see for yourself” .
“I don’t have the time for that right now and that will raise brows”.
“Alright sir, I would leave you to go through these ones while I compile another list”
“Another list?” Lucas could not imagine adding another list to this one he already had.
“You know what? Just set something up with these two, put it in my calendar”
Very well, sir. I'll commence the task immediately," Tom affirmed before leaving the office.
*********
Sophie groaned and kicked the shoe in front of her.
“Oh great, today of all days huh”
The heel of her shoe had completely come off, she was running late for her interview and could not afford a new one anyways. She grabbed the shoe and hobbled her way towards the entrance of the building, she ignored the strange glances she got from people around and walked into the elevator.
“What floor is it?” She searched through her bag desperately looking for where she had written the address, her phone’s battery was dead, so she could not check her phone for the exact floor. She pressed the sixth floor button.
She walked into the corridor of the sixth floor. She tried to smooth the stray strands of hair and knocked on the second door. She hoped to God she was on the right floor because she was already late and didn’t want to miss this interview. Working with Blackwood Holdings would be a dream come through.
She opened the door and nothing prepared her for who she saw.
She stood frozen by the door, a shoe in hand, the rude and arrogant man from the other night sat behind a big mahogany desk. He looked even more handsome in broad daylight, his hair was a golden brown and his eyes were hazelnut. His whole appearance gave an air of sophistication.
“You work here?” she bit her lips in regret as soon as the words flew out of her mouth. What sort of question was that, the man clearly works here.
“We did not get to introduce ourselves the first time we met, I am Lucas Blackwood” He said, a sly smile spread on his face. “And to answer your question, I don’t work here, I own the place”
“Lucas Blackwood?” She asked with shock written over her face.
“Yes and how may I help you miss…?”
“I….I…I” Sophie was speechless, the scene at the balcony flashed through her eyes.
“Cat cut your tongue?”
“I am Sophie Anderson sir” she swallowed.
“What are you doing in my office?”
“I am here for an interview sir”
“I thought you felt sorry for the people that worked with me?” He raised an eyebrow.
“It was a slip of tongue. I did not mean anything I said that night”
“The interview is not on this floor, why are you in my office”
“I lost my way”
“If I didn’t know better I would say you are stalking me”
Sophie almost rolled her eyes but caught herself, she desperately needed this job.
“What position did you apply for?”
“The receptionist”
Lucas touched his chin as if in deep thoughts.
“Well young lady you just had your interview with me”
“What?” Sophie blurted out.
“Yeah, we will get back to you in due time”
What was he going at? She wondered. He did not ask her any question in relation to the position she was applying for.
“You may leave” his voice jolted her back to reality.
“Thank you sir” She said as she turned to leave the office.
He picked up his intercom and called for Tom, he needed him to add another name to that list.
Five minutes later, Tom was sitting in his office.
“I have a name I want you to add to the list, her name is Sophia Anderson. I want you to do a thorough background check on her and get back to me as soon as possible” Lucas said
“Okay sir”
“I want to know where she lives, who are her friends, where she works , who she works for, everything”
“Alright sir, I will get to work” Thomas responded.
***************
Sophie walked out of the office building dejected, once again her smart mouth had put her in trouble. She knew she was not going to get the job. She had three jobs already and she could barely pay her bills. She wanted something that would pay her enough to leave these other jobs.
She got to her next shift thirty minutes late, her boss, the owner of the cafe where she worked as a cleaner was furious.
"It seems to me that you've gotten another job huh?"
"No ma'am"
"Then you should start looking because you no longer work here."
Sophie was shocked.
"I don't understand" she asked close to tears.
"You're fired! I warned you about coming late, I told you next time will be the last time"
"I'm sorry Miss Beatrice, it won't happen again please"
"Here's your paycheck" Miss Beatrice threw a brown envelope at her.
Sophia knew begging would be of no use as she picked up the slim envelope to check.
"My money isn't complete"
Madam Beatrice scoffed.
"That's what you worked for, now get lost!"
"No, this is barely half of my salary, the month ends in three days…"
"That's the problem with you poor folks, always wanting to reap where you did not sow. Well if you must know I removed money for all the days you were late"
"You can't do that! Please I need this money"
"I already did" she replied, walking out on a dumbfounded Sophie.
