Love Beyond Lies

The next day, Jimi and Lara were summoned to her parents’ opulent mansion in Lekki. The sun outside was bright, but inside the house, the mood was as dark and heavy as an impending storm. The grand living room, usually a space of warmth and celebration, now felt like a courtroom. Lara stepped into the room, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor, only to be met with a line of stern, unreadable faces. Her parents sat stiffly on one side of the sofa, and opposite them were Jimi’s parents—equally grave, equally silent. No one smiled and no one moved which made Lara's heart pounded. “Omolara,” Honorable Adeshina began, his voice as hard as steel. “We need to talk.” She stood tall, folding her arms across her chest like armor. “Let me guess,” she said coolly, her eyes flicking to Jimi. “He’s been whispering lies about me again.” A flicker of hurt passed over Jimi’s face, but it was quickly replaced by something darker—resolve. Jimi stood, his voice sharp and deliberate. “I’ve kept quiet long enough. But today, I’ll speak my truth.” Everyone leaned in. “She used me,” he declared. “Lara manipulated me into this marriage. She used me to acquire her father’s wealth like bait, made me feel like I had no choice. And now that she thinks she’s secured it all, she wants out. She doesn’t love me. She never did.” Lara's jaw tightened, but Jimi wasn’t done. “She’s been sneaking around with Korede. Even after we got married.” A gasp erupted from Madam Adeshina. She clutched her pearls, her face drained of color. “No—” Lara started, voice trembling. “That’s not how it happened—” “Isn’t it?” Jimi snapped. “I’ve seen the texts about the elopement. The calls at odd hours concerning acquiring of your father's property. The lies. You didn't just cheat on me, Lara—you humiliated me.” The room went cold. All eyes were on her, eyes that once adored her now filled with disbelief and disappointment. “How could you?” her mother whispered, tears brimming. “We raised you better than this.” Lara clenched her fists, her breath catching. She wanted to scream, to explain, to run—but nothing came out. “And,” Jimi added, voice now hoarse with hurt, “you’re planning to terminate our child so that you can elope with Korede. You were going to erase a life we created together like it meant nothing.” The silence was deafening. Then all at once, the room erupted—shouting, tears, questions flying in every direction. Lara’s world spun. Her heart raced. Rage, guilt, and pain collided inside her. “Enough!” she cried, voice cracking as she turned to the door. “I’m done being judged by all of you!” She stormed out, slamming the door behind her with such force that a portrait rattled on the wall. Inside, Jimi sat down, shoulders trembling but his face resolute. His mother reached over and took his hand. “We’re with you, son,” she said softly. “Yes,” Honorable Adeshina echoed. “We’ll support you—whatever happens. She has to face the consequences of her actions.” Jimi nodded slowly, a swirl of emotions dancing in his chest. Relief. Sadness. Betrayal. But also, a strange kind of peace. Lara’s reputation was in tatters. But for once, the truth was finally out. For days, Lara shut the world out. She stayed in her room, curtains drawn, her phone silenced. The noise from the confrontation echoed in her head on a loop. At night, she cried—hot, bitter tears she told herself were for the injustice of it all. But in the quiet, she began to confront what she hadn’t dared to face: She was wrong. Korede had never truly loved her. He was a sweet-talking fraud, a user. She had been so desperate for thrills, validation, and control that she mistook manipulation for romance. And Jimi? He had loved her. Steadily. Quietly. Sincerely. She remembered the nights he made her laugh after a rough day, the way he defended her when his cycle of friends judged her, the way he always made sure she never felt alone. And what had she done? She discarded him like a stepping stone. One evening, Lara appeared at Jimi’s room. She stood in the hallway, drenched in pool of her own tears, shivering, unsure if he’d even open the door. He did. And for a moment, they just stared at each other—two hearts bruised and unsure. “I’m not here to argue,” she said, voice barely above the rain. “I’m here to say I’m sorry.” Jimi stepped aside, letting her in. “I was blind,” she said as she stood in his living room. “I was selfish. I chased fantasy and betrayed someone who was real. Someone who cared. I don’t deserve your forgiveness… but I hope someday, you can give it.” Jimi studied her face, searching for deceit. But all he saw was sincerity. Pain. Regret. “I don’t hate you,” he said softly. “But trust… that takes time.” “I’ll earn it,” she whispered. They started therapy. Attended couples’ retreats. Fought. Cried. Healed. And slowly, something changed. Lara began to see Jimi through new eyes—not just as the man she married for convenience, but as the man she truly admired. He was funny, clever, patient. His strength wasn’t loud; it was steadfast. And his love wasn’t flashy; it was real. One afternoon when Lara was heavy with her pregnancy, they walked hand-in-hand, coming from antenatal, Jimi glanced at her and smiled. “I don’t know how we got here,” he said. “But I’m glad we stayed.” Lara stopped and turned to him. “I am too. I used to think love was fireworks and danger. But now, I know it’s in the steady flame that never goes out.” He pulled her close. “I love you, Lara. Not the version who wanted to run, but the one who chose to stay.” Tears filled her eyes. “And I love you, Jimi. Thank you for giving me a second chance.” That evening, as they sat on the couch, Lara leaned into him. “You know, I used to think marrying you was a trap.” Jimi chuckled. “And now?” “Now I know it was the best thing that ever happened to me.” He kissed her forehead. “Same here.” Their journey had been messy, painful, and complicated. But they had chosen each other again—not out of obligation, but from a place of truth. And this time, it was real.
