When Marriage Becomes A War Zone

1139 Words
The night before Lara’s plan was to take shape, the heavens unleashed a furious downpour. The rain fell with relentless intensity, its rhythm striking against the windows like a dirge, moaning with the cold wind that slipped through the cracks of the house. Trees outside bowed and swayed, their shadows stretching long across the walls. The whole atmosphere felt charged—ominous, expectant—like nature itself knew something was about to shatter. Jimi couldn’t sleep. He tossed and turned in his bed, the chill in the air biting through his blanket like the sharp edge of a blade. A strange restlessness gnawed at him—an itch beneath his skin he couldn’t scratch. Something felt… off. Driven by an uneasy instinct, he stood, pulled the blanket tighter around his shoulders, and padded down the hallway. He paused at Lara’s door. A soft sliver of light leaked beneath it. Curiosity tugged at him. He knocked once—lightly—then pushed the door open just enough to peek in. Lara lay awake on her side, cocooned beneath a thick duvet, her eyes staring blankly at the wall. Her body was still, but her eyes were loud with conflict. “Hey wifey,” Jimi whispered, “Can’t sleep either?” Lara slowly turned her head, her eyes locking with his. There was something wild in her gaze—part desperation, part exhaustion. “It’s too cold,” she murmured. “Too quiet. I hate this silence.” Jimi nodded, offering a thin smile. “Yeah… the rain makes the house feel like it’s holding its breath.” He waited, but she said nothing. “I’ll let you rest,” he said softly. “Try to get some sleep, Lara.” She nodded without meeting his gaze. But ten minutes after returning to his room, Jimi heard it—the softest of taps. Not a knock. Not a scratch. Just... a ghost of contact on wood. He opened the door cautiously. Lara stood there, barefoot and pale, her nightgown damp around the hem as if she had stepped in water. Her lips trembled, not from the cold—but from whatever fire was kindling inside her. She didn’t speak. She simply stepped forward, eyes searching his, and then wrapped her arms around him. Her embrace was fierce, almost frantic, and when her lips met his, they burned with a need that startled him. “Lara,” he breathed between kisses, “what’s happening?” She didn’t answer. Instead, she pulled him back into the room. Whatever storm raged outside now mirrored what swirled between them—raw, heated, and uncontrollable. Clothes were shed. Touches deepened. Their bodies remembered what their hearts had tried to forget. Jimi had dreamt of this closeness—of Lara willingly in his arms—but something about her urgency felt strange, rehearsed, almost too perfect. Afterwards, they lay tangled in the sheets, the scent of rain mixing with skin and sighs. Jimi traced circles on her back. “Lara… why now?” She looked at him, a half-smile playing on her lips. “I just knew… I wanted to be with you tonight.” He stared at her, confused, but content to pretend everything was right. For now. But the morning came like a hammer to glass. Sunlight pierced through the blinds, sharp and unapologetic. The warmth of the previous night faded as reality crept in. Lara sat up suddenly, clutching the sheets to her chest. She looked around, her eyes darting as if trying to place herself in a foreign land. Then she turned toward Jimi—still asleep, his face peaceful. That peace infuriated her. “Jimi!” she snapped, shaking his shoulders violently. “Wake up!” Jimi stirred, groggy. “Hmm? Lara? What’s wrong?” She stood, wrapping the sheet around her body like armor. “What the hell happened last night?” He blinked. “What do you mean?” “I woke up in your bed, Jimi! That’s what I mean!” Her voice rose, jagged and shrill. Jimi sat up, the confusion evaporating from his face. “Lara… you came to my room. You kissed me. You… wanted it.” She scoffed, her laughter bitter. “So now I’m a desperate woman throwing myself at you?” “That’s not what I—” “You think I’d willingly sleep with you?” she spat, pointing a trembling finger. “Don’t flatter yourself.” Jimi’s jaw clenched. “Don’t twist this. You came to me. You knew what you were doing. Or are you going to pretend you weren’t aware of every move you made?” Lara’s eyes darkened like the sky before a storm. “You’re right,” she said quietly, too quietly. “I did know what I was doing.” Jimi paused. “What are you talking about?” “I needed a witness,” she said coldly. “Evidence.” “Evidence of what?” His voice turned cautious. “Of you,” she hissed. “Of the monster I’m married to. And now, I have exactly what I need.” Jimi’s heart pounded. “Lara… what are you planning?” She stepped forward, her expression a cruel mask. “I’m filing for divorce, Jimi. Effective immediately.” His mouth went dry. “What?” “And I’ll make sure everyone knows why,” she sneered. “I'll tell them how you took advantage of me. How you manipulated me. And if you dare contest it, I’ll accuse you of rape.” The word struck like a lightning bolt. Jimi shot to his feet, eyes wide, fury rising. “You wouldn’t dare.” She smiled. “Oho! You think so? Then, watch me.” “You’re insane!” he thundered. “You think people will believe you over me?” “I’m a woman,” she said coolly. “A vulnerable, heartbroken wife in a toxic marriage. All I need is one tear and a trembling voice, and you’ll be crucified by morning.” Jimi’s fists clenched, veins bulging. “You planned this. You used me.” Lara nodded, no remorse in her gaze. “You made it too easy. You fell right into the trap.” He stepped closer, his voice a low growl. “You’re playing with fire, Lara. This isn’t a game.” “Maybe not for you,” she said with a smirk. “But for me? This is checkmate.” The air between them crackled with hatred. The rain had stopped outside, but inside the storm was just beginning. As Lara turned and walked out of his room, leaving behind a trail of twisted bedsheets and shattered trust, Jimi felt a coldness deeper than any winter seep into his bones. This wasn’t just a broken marriage anymore. It was war.
