Behind the Avatar: Bar Destiny

Kousuke Nagareyama, twenty-eight, is an ordinary salaryman at a mid-sized company in Tokyo. Exhausted from long workdays, he has one small oasis he counts on: a neighborhood bar he visits on his way home. It isn’t flashy, and that’s exactly why he loves it. It’s the perfect place to savor a quiet drink alone. One evening, as usual, Kousuke sits at the counter with a glass of whiskey. While sipping, he notices a woman taking the seat beside him. She carries herself with an understated, intelligent calm and greets the bartender with friendly ease. Intrigued, Kousuke can’t help speaking to her. “Do you come here often?” he asks. She looks momentarily surprised but then offers a gentle smile. “I drop by now and then. It’s such a peaceful spot.” Seizing the chance to chat, Kousuke learns her name: Manna Fujii, twenty-four. They exchange light banter, and Kousuke feels drawn to her quiet, somewhat mysterious aura. As she leaves with a warm farewell—“I hope we’ll meet here again”—he’s left with a subtle spark of anticipation. Days pass, and Kousuke finds himself at the bar several more times but doesn’t see Manna. Just when he assumes their encounter was a fleeting coincidence, she reappears. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” Manna greets him first this time, catching him a bit off guard. Quickly, he returns her hello. They settle in on adjacent stools as though it’s the most natural thing in the world. Their conversation flows from interests and hobbies to favorite movies, music, and even games. Kousuke notices a special sparkle in her eyes whenever gaming comes up. “How’s work?” he asks. Manna hesitates. “I have kind of an unusual job… but I don’t really talk about it.” “An unusual job?” She gives a small shrug. “It’s pretty freeform—not your typical office routine.” There’s something elusive in her tone, but Kousuke senses she doesn’t want to elaborate. He decides not to pry. A faint curiosity takes root in him about her hidden side. Later, perhaps under the influence of alcohol, Manna speaks in a softer voice. “Sometimes it’s hard to show my real self. That’s why having a place where I can become someone else feels comforting.” Kousuke senses a hint of personal struggle behind her words, but he simply listens, thinking that if she ever wants to reveal more, he’ll be there to accept it. A few days later, on his day off, Kousuke is scrolling through social media at home. He stumbles upon a world-famous VTuber named Luna, known for her charismatic persona and massive following in Japan and abroad. Curious, he clicks on one of her streams. On screen, a beautifully animated character speaks in a cheerful voice. Yet something about that voice gives Kousuke a jolt of recognition. “That voice... I’ve heard it somewhere before.” Focusing on her speech patterns and mannerisms, he can’t shake the resemblance to Manna. Though he has no definitive proof, the suspicion lingers. The next time he sees Manna at the bar, he decides to ask outright. “Manna, this might sound strange, but... are you Luna?” Her eyes widen in shock before settling into resignation. Quietly, she confirms, “Yes. I’m Luna. Please... promise not to tell anyone.” She explains how Luna is her alter ego—a shield to protect her insecurities and a place where she can feel truly free. Kousuke simply nods, offering gentle reassurance. “Do you really have to hide it? I think you’re wonderful as you are.” Manna’s eyes brim with relief at his words. “Thank you... No one’s ever told me that before.” But the calm doesn’t last long. A few days later, a crisis erupts when a disturbing video appears on Luna’s social media account. The on-screen Luna character spews harsh, insulting remarks about fans and rival VTubers—completely out of character for her usual content. Confusion and outrage spread among her followers, and negative comments flood in: “I can’t support this anymore.” “Why would she say something like that?” Meanwhile, Manna discovers she’s locked out of her own account. Her login credentials have been changed. “Why can’t I get in? This makes no sense...” she mutters, panic rising as she sees real-time reactions calling Luna “the worst” and “disappointing.” “That wasn’t me... I would never do this,” she whispers, voice trembling. Without any way to fix it, she flees to the one place she feels safe—the bar, where Kousuke is waiting. “Kousuke... I’m in serious trouble,” she confesses in a shaking voice. “Someone hijacked my Luna account.” “What? Who would do that?” She bites her lip. “It... it was my manager. I thought I could trust him.” Manna reveals how the manager only ever saw her as a money-making tool. He constantly urged her to post shocking or provocative content to boost views and profits. She refused, unwilling to betray her fans, and that refusal led to sabotage. “If you won’t do it, I will,” he threatened—and took over the account himself to orchestrate a scandal. Tears blur Manna’s vision as she admits, “Everything I’ve built... it might be ruined.” Kousuke places a reassuring hand on hers. “That won’t happen. We’ll prove who the real Luna is. Once people know the truth, your fans will understand. You’re not alone.” Her eyes widen at his certainty. A glimmer of hope stirs within her. “Thank you... I’ll try to fight back.” The next day, with Kousuke’s encouragement, Manna prepares a new channel for an emergency livestream. Though her hands shake, she gathers her courage. “Your fans want to hear directly from you,” Kousuke tells her. “Don’t be afraid to speak.” Breathing deeply, Manna takes on Luna’s persona for the camera. “Good evening, everyone. This is Luna. There’s something very important I need to say.” Instantly, curious viewers swarm the comment section. Manna closes her eyes for a moment, then explains the situation. “First, I want to apologize for the confusion. The inappropriate posts weren’t mine. My account was taken over by someone else. I’ve always tried to make my streams a place of fun and warmth. It’s precious to me. But this incident made me realize... I need to face who I am in reality, too.” A moment of quiet follows before the screen bursts with messages of support: “We believe you, Luna!” “Stay strong!” “We’re with you!” Manna’s voice trembles. “I plan to keep being Luna. And... little by little... I want to show more of my real self to all of you.” When the livestream ends, she exhales a long sigh and closes her eyes. “You did great,” Kousuke says softly. “They understood you.” She looks up at him, relief spreading across her features. “You really think so?” He nods. “They believe in you. You saw the comments, right?” A quiet smile blooms on her face. “Thank you. Truly.” Days later, they meet again at the bar. Manna thanks Kousuke, her eyes reflecting a calmer, steadier determination. He brushes off the praise, but there’s warmth in his expression. Finally, he takes a deep breath. “Manna, there’s something I want to tell you.” Her cheeks tint pink. “What is it?” “I want to stay by your side. Whether you’re Luna or Manna, I care about all of you. Let me support you—for real.” Her surprise melts into a shy smile. “I... feel safe with you. I’d like that, too.” He gently takes her hand. “Thank you. I promise I’ll protect you.” In that moment, real love takes root between them, nurtured by mutual trust and support. On screen, Luna’s fans cheer her on. Offline, Kousuke watches over Manna with a heart full of devotion. Their story has only just begun, but the bond they share will grow stronger with each passing day.
